Health Issues

Wow I'm overwelmed by all those taking to time to respond to my questions about my "health issues" Thank you to you all. Before I go I will get a definative answer from my Doctor as to what I'm allowed to do and follow his word completely. My wife keeps telling me I am taking my condition to lightly and from your responses I am beginning to agree. We are both 62 years old, did the Disney Half Marathon last January and are huge thrill ride enthusists. Perhaps a more relaxing trip to WDW, which we always say we are going to do, instead of rope drop stampedes is finally in order. Look out IASW here we come.

I love the thrill rides and I was upset that I wouldn't be able to do them on our first trip after I started taking Coumadin. We decided to take it easy and enjoy all the little details of WDW and it turned out to be a great trip! I'm allowed to ride the coasters again, and I do, but our trip style has really changed now. We really enjoy taking the time to enjoy all the details and the things we used to rush past on the way to the next thrill ride. The Christmas season is an especially good time for a relaxed trip like that - there are so many things to see and enjoy.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!

It is a big deal, and your wife is right. In addition to my patient that I spoke about, our unit had a perfectly healthy 40-something die after a "routine" laparascopic surgery. From a blood clot. My cousin died after developing blood clots after delivering her first baby. It's a real big deal. I'm glad you are reconsidering your doctor's wise counsel.

Remember, there have been people who died on these rides...from "pre-existing" conditions. That's what you have now, buddy...a pre-existing condition. Wouldn't want you to be the person they had to shut down the ride for!

There is so much other fun stuff to do (besides the jerky rides) You'll have a blast anyway. And your wife will continue to have you for many more vacations in the future.

My DH is on Coumadin. I don't think his Dr ever told him to be careful doing anything like amusement rides. Probably just an oversite on his behalf but we have been to our local amusement park and he rode everything. Fortunately he had no problems or bruising. I'll definately have him talk to his Dr. though before our next Disney trip. Has anyones personal Dr told them to not ride a Disney ride or be cautious doing things that are along this line?

YES! I was 38 when I landed in the hospital with DVTs & PEs. No thrill rides plus an entire list of other things to avoid.

I also have to add there were several trips I have to cancel due to INR numbers & even had to have blood tests while away to make sure it was ok for me to fly home.
I had diet restrictions as well.

Four weeks ago I was found to have blood clots in my leg and lungs and put on a blood thinner Kumedin. My first question to the Doctor was would I still be able to go on my Dec 5th trip to WDW. He replied yes but "probably" no Space Mtn. or Mission Space etc.. Anyone here with a similiar condition put on any restrictions for riding certain rides or attractions ? Any "DIS doctors" have any thoughts?

I had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in my lung) and I am on Coumadin. I am not allowed to ride on Space Mountain, Mission Space, RnR, and basically anything that is high impact should be avoided. My doctor gave me a stern warning prior to going and I would not go against anything he advises.

Feel better!!

Honestly, I would stay away from ANY ride that has a health restriction. If they're not good for people with high blood pressure, heart conditions, back and neck problems etc., they're likely not going to be safe for you.
::yes::
I agree with the other posters.

You can look at the park maps for the attractions with warnings - they are marked with a red triangle on the map and also on a sign at the entrance to the queue.
For Epcot here are the attractions with warnings:
  • Mission Space - both the more tame (green side) and the more wild (orange side)
  • Test Track
For Magic Kingdom:
  • Splash Mountain
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Tomorrowland Indy Speedway
  • Space Mountain
  • Goofy's Barnstormer (this doesn't have a triangle warning sign on the map, but does say that pregnant women should not ride, so you may want to avoid it)
For Disney Studio
  • Star Tours
  • Rock N Roller Coaster
  • Tower of Terror
For Animal Kingdom:
  • Kilimanjaro Safari
  • Kali River Rapids
  • Expedition Everest
  • Primeval Whirl
  • Dinosaur

Becareful of the sun exposure and some foods can increase the effectiveness of coumadin. Be very carefull, if your blood gets too thin and you begin to bleed, it can affect your bloods ability to clot. DH took coumadin for a few years off and on. Dangerous but effective drug.
