So the update you've been waiting for...
I signed us up for this activity well over a month ago. We were volunteering at a Long Term Care Center in Nashville. Disney only recognizes volunteers 6 years and up and then you have to find an opportunity for a person this age. There are lots of opportunities for 14 and up but it's slim pickens with the young kids.
This particular opportunity appealled to me because even though Josie wasn't old enough to qualify for a pass, they would let her participate and that was just fine with us. We wanted to do this as a family. Once Jay and Leona committed to going we signed them up to participate as well.
Our opportunity was this Saturday Feb. 20. We held a party for the residents on level 3 of the center. Leona and I made 6 dozen cupcakes and a huge container of icing on Thursday night. Leona took the cupcakes home and froze them until Saturday morning. (This is a great trick for preserving freshness....seal them up as soon as they cool and then freeze them but I digress). I brought all of my coloring pastes and we both picked up tons of different sprinkles to bring with us. After cupcakes we had a little foam craft we picked up.
We arrived at the center right at 1:00pm. The volunteer coordinator for the facility was such a sweet lady....and a big Disney fan too.

She brought a cart and we loaded all of our stuff up and took it up to the room. Josie was being shy at first but she quickly adapted and buddied up with a few of the ladies. The people on this floor have the best mental and physical state of the facility. They were incredibly awesome people. I have to admit that I think we all fell in love with them.
We started by letting folks pick a cupcake (white, chocolate, or yellow). Then we asked them what color icing they wanted. We put some in a bowl and I colored it to the color of their choice. Then the residents could put it on their cupcake....some just ate the icing right out of the bowl with the plastic knife we gave them...too cute.
Here's a pic of Leona helping Josie put icing on a cupcake for a resident that asked them to put the icing on for them.
We made hearts after everyone was done with cupcakes. The girls helped the residents bling them up and then personalized them for them. The residents seemed to really enjoy the craft too.
This little guy ate 7+ cupcakes..... He was in heaven! In this pic Jay and Lexie are helping him with the craft.
One of the residents asked Lexie to make the heart out to her Mom and Dad-she was looking for them. Is that not the sweetest and saddest thing you've ever heard?
Look at my shy little Josie socializing and helping out....
I don't have a picture of me, Joe or Preston helping...mostly because I was being held hostage by this visitor that kept telling me how he used to sing on Broadway and was going to marry Taylor Swift. I finally escaped him one time and he began to chat up Leona. When he asked her to feel his muscles she split.

He had a girlfriend on the floor. She was really, really sweet. Apparently they've been together for 35 years. I'm not quite sure how Taylor fits into that picture.
I think if you took a poll this very sweet and sassy lady was everyone's favorite. She was a pistol. I think she had a thing for Joe. They picked at each other almost the entire time.
Shortly around 3:30pm the coordinator told us we had really done a great job and encouraged us to get going. We offered to mop the floor etc., and she would not have it. We gave some hugs and said some goodbyes and right before we were leaving, this really sweet lady looked at me and said "honey I hope you will come back.". That nearly broke my heart.

Needless to say I've already been in contact with the coordinator to set something else up.
The coordinator told us on the way home that she's had families from Michigan, Arkansas, Kentucky, Georgia and some other locations contact her about opportunities. She is really trying to work with everyone she can. She said the residents are having such a good time with the interaction. She did tell us that a family from Florida contacted her and told her that she WOULD have something for them to do at 8pm on a Saturday night when they got into town

.....there's always one bad apple isn't there!!
