So... we cancelled our Disney trip we had been planning for 2 years in July.. wish we wouldn't have now.. but too late.

My husband is not going, just me and my son to visit another family. He works in Healthcare and sees how bad this Covid is and is saying maybe we should cancel... ugh. I really don't want to cancel, but I can understand where he is coming from.

Just wondering if anyone else is feeling last minute fears since Covid is picking up again so badly?

Thanks, Kim

I can't speak for Universal but I hadn't left my house in 7 months. I entered three stores in 7 months. I bit the bullet for my kids and we've now been back a total of 3 times in 6 weeks. I felt safer in Disney than when I had to run into Walmart to get my RX's I left at home. Yes, there are a lot of people but with everyone wearing masks it's as safe as you could possibly be during Covid.

Just take your precautions and be extra mindful of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
I've been visiting the theme parks 3 times a week since they reopen in June, i also work at a theme park (swo), both my kids work at the theme parks (wdw and uor) and we've been fine

It isn't in my comfort zone yet to do the parks. Heck, I left Home Goods yesterday because it was too crowded for my liking so use that as your barometer. ;) But numbers really are spiking and my dh has some health risks so I try to err on the side of overly cautious.
Does your state have any quarantine restrictions when you come home from FL? I know it is on our state's list and we would be supposed to quarantine for 14 days upon returning home.

This 100%... we are going over Thanksgiving break, and I hear that mask enforcement is better in the parks than around my home town.

Everyone has to judge for themselves, hard to answer, but like others have said, masks make a difference, airflow, and limited time indoors. It actually feels good to go someplace where masks and the proper wearing of them is enforced. It feels good that everyone wants to have fun and for the most part are willing to do what they have to do for that to happen and continue. It was also weird for us to come back home and notice so many people not wearing masks after having that been a part of life for an entire week.

Not a doctor and can’t give medical advice, but I traveled to Orlando last week from Minnesota. Near me, people think Covid is a hoax and mask compliance at Walmart is 50% at best. I hate having to go out and run errands in my local community. However, I felt absolutely at ease last week in the airports, on the planes, at the hotels, at the parks.... mask compliance was near 100%, and social distancing was overall very well enforced. I would go back in a heartbeat, and certainly before spending any comparable amount of time out in my home community.

We went end of July during the Florida peak and felt perfectly safe. Precautions were awesome, so much better enforced than anywhere around here. We leave tomorrow for a long weekend and are looking forward. Yes numbers are going up, but we also feel comfortable taking common sense precautions and living our lives. It is a very personal choice though. Just be prepared and be in control of your surroundings and not expect everyone else to always do their part. There were several times we just skipped things that felt too crowded for us or asked to be moved if we didn't feel distancing was appropriate and the workers were very accommodating.

Like others said - use common sense and do what makes you comfortable.

Disney\Universal will do everything they can to reduce the risk - more so than a local supermarket\shop IMO - they have more to loose.

The media will pounce on Disney\Universal if they can tie cases to it - harder to do with a supermarket.
You can close a shop for a week or two and clean it out - but after that they will reopen business as usual - seen it more than enough.
If the Parks have to close it will not be a week or two.

We haven't been back to WDW or UO yet (mid-Dec and late Jan - yay!!!!), but dh and I traveled from KY to Asheville NC last week; it was the first travel we've done since last January's Orlando trip. Honestly, the touristy places we went (Biltmore, Great Smoky Mtns RR), the restaurants, everything was at least as good and often better than it is in our hometown. We were careful with what we did and where we ate, and it was so wonderful to travel again.

I think that if you are taking precautions during your travel, WDW and UO seem to be good places to be right now. That's why we decided to bring our kids down in Dec and keep our Jan couples trip. I'm driving the kids down in Dec and have impressed that we will be eating outdoors, in the car, at the condo. No big restaurant meals this trip. They get it. It'll be even easier when dh and I come down, bc we are truly on the same page as to how to treat this.

WDW, UO, the Biltmore, all touristy places want to stay open, so they want you to be safe there. They are taking this seriously, and I am so happy they are.

I'm in MN and scheduled to go to Orlando next Friday. With the crazy surge we're seeing right now, I am vacillate between being scared to leave my house and wanting to get the heck out of MN and spend some time in the Disney and Universal bubble.

We live locally and went to WDW twice this week and Universal yesterday. Mask compliance was very good at Disney but yesterday at Universal, not so much....I'd say 60%. Lots of noses out and masks down on the chin. It was sad because it was good at Disney. We went to the Studios on Tuesday, MK on Thursday and Universal yesterday.

I think like all human activity, the answer is “it depends”. We spent three days in Universal in October and saw very few not wearing masks properly and only one egregious case while in a queue.

I’d also bet that people that were there the same days and times as us had different experiences in different spots of the park.

If your husband works in Healthcare and sees firsthand what its like in your area, and he's saying you should cancel, I would listen to him.

I also work in Healthcare and I keep saying it's way worse now than it was in the spring. Hospitals here are full with not enough staff. It is bad. Cases have jumped drastically even in the last week.

I do think that people have different perceptions of what is good and bad, but like I said, I live locally and go to the parks frequently. I have been to Universal four times in the last 2 months. One time mask compliance was good, the other two not so much and 2 days ago, it was bad! I also think SeaWorld has good and bad days, but generally Disney has not been bad compared to Universal and SeaWorld.

Its been hit and miss this week. Seaworld was mostly ok. Epcot ak were fine. Studios and Mk were rough in places fine in others. Busch was a train wreck. Disney Springs was again hit and miss. It sucks because they need some way to share live attendance for those who want to avoid the crowds.

They havent capped attendance enough for the weekends but for the mon to thurs things seemed to be ok.

That's too bad that where you live has such poor compliance with safety measures.
I live in Minnesota too, and all the restaurants and stores where I live, follow the safety measures, even Walmart. I was surprised at the compliance here. I can't speak for the bars because that's not what we do, but I hear they don't push social distancing much in some of the bars in town, so there's that.
It's 20 degrees with snow and 25 MPH winds right now. I would definitely go to Universal or WDW right now!!!

My children are healthcare workers and work with patients with Covid. It is very real at home and in Florida. That said, your chances of picking it up depends on your actions. We drove 17 hours nonstop from “up north” to Florida. Ate sandwiches in the car and used precautions using the gas pumps, as we would at home. We live near Disney and have annual passes. in the past month we have been to MK, Epcot, and HS. We go there to get our miles in walking. The parks have been relatively empty, similar to a cold weekday in the off season. Absolutely delightful! We don’t touch any surfaces and don’t go on any rides, and people keep their distance. Mask compliance is great. The busiest time we experienced that made us feel edgy was in the back of Epcot as we approached Japan: , Food and Wine, after work crowds were arriving and the sidewalks were getting busy. That’s too busy for us and we left. We go to Disney Springs to listen to music at the House of Blues Front Porch. Again, tables are far apart and carefully cleaned. It’s great. Right now I’m sitting poolside at Saratoga Springs waiting for my husband who is golfing (also done very safely here). The pool is so empty and the closest table with people is 20 feet away.
But we have some basic guidelines:
- we avoid the weekends when the locals increase the crowds. Same WDW, malls, outdoor dining...
- no rides
- outdoor dining only (wherever we go) limit store time
- never touch surfaces
- Ferry Boat not Monorail at MK
I’ve observed the younger kids in the park and there hands are on every railing and surface. I wouldn’t bring my own (ages1-7) to a park but would take them to enjoy a DVC resort experience.

Only go if you are comfortable catching the virus. It is in the parks and will inevitably spread to some guests who drew the short straw that day. Precautions just reduce transmission, not prevent it entirely.

Ive had the virus and it took me nearly two months to get back to normal heart and lung health and was rough at the beginning. I nearly had to go to the hospital (should have but my local first responders don’t wear masks and I didn’t want to catch the virus from them) and would not be risking an Orlando trip if I hadn’t had the virus already because of how full hospitals are.

Most guests will be fine but so are most drunk drivers and those who recklessly speed.

Safety precautions are followed much less by guests on crowded days...which is when you are going. Expect no social distancing in the queues where team members aren’t around, masks down with groups shouting...indoors, and long waits inside buildings around the same group of unmasked people.
