Head Hunters for Jobs? Ever use one?

Has anyone ever used a Head Hunter for a job? Did they find you or did you hire them? How do you find one in your field? How do they get paid?

I've used them for my last two jobs -- more often these days, jobs are only posted through recruiters (aka headhunters).

There's a couple ways to contact a headhunter. You can send your resume directly to a recruiting firm. If you look around places like Monster or CareerBoard, you'll figure out pretty quickly what some of the big ones are. I've used Robert Half in the past -- once, they got me a job quickly, the other time they disappeared on me and I never heard from them.

The other way to get in touch with a headhunter is to apply for a specific job listed by a recruiter. Often, you won't get that exact job, but you'll have a contact person who'll work with you to try to find a suitable job.

Oh, and they get paid by the company who lists the job -- as a % of your starting salary, usually.

A headhunter is a good supplement to a job search. I have my current job due to Robert Half.

Keep in mind you are just another name on a large database of names -- so don't put all your hope in this. If there is a match, then good for you and the company. The company who hires you pays the headhunter a healthy percentage

My husband got calls form recruiters ALL the time..they find him via his resume on HotJobs and Monster.com.
He is an accountant, which is a field that has a lot of recruiters.
He got his current job through his recruiter.
For a while there he was getting phone calls at least 3 times a week from various agencies.
