He did it again last night

DH had another sugar-low delirium episode last night. :( At least this time he was home when it hit him. We watched Superman 3 last night, and by the time it was over he was rather goofy. Said he was going to go up and say goodnight to Kit and Kat (those two kittens he rescued). About 10 minutes later (at around 2:30am) my cell phone was ringing and he was asking for help from his office. He was on the floor of the office and couldn't get up without help, stumbled all over upstairs until I got him to sit in a chair, and sunk back into an episode. :( He wasn't quite as far this time as last time, but still it took until 4 before I felt he was sugar-balanced enough to be safe letting him (and me) sleep. I saw this one coming on in the middle of Superman and tried to keep it off with some food and stuff, but it didn't work. :( I've told him he needs to get into the dr's office ASAP. In fact, I'm thinking I may do some hunting to see if I can find the dr's office he goes to and see if *I* can call and get him in sooner.

Tammi, that's scary. Get him in to see his doctor right away. Good luck! :goodvibes

I'm giving him until noon to let me know he's called the dr *and explained this can't wait until the end of the month*. If he doesn't, I will.

How do you know that these problems are caused by low blood sugar? You don't know who his doctor is?

That is scary, I know but with correct medication can be controlled. I agree that he needs to see a doctor ASAP. A friend I work closely with also suffers from this and we recognise her symptoms before she does. If we see she is suffering we open a bottle of energy drink and put it in her hand. If someone does this she automatically drinks it, or we open a cereal bar for her and put it in her hand. If this doesn't work we have a tube of hypostop that we open and spoon feed her (we used to just give her the tube but she would just put it down, by putting the spoon up to her mouth she automatically takes it.)
I hope your DH gets a diagnosis and treatment plan soon, PD to you both.

Okay, he's gotten in to an afternoon appointment today.

Symptoms were slurred speech, stumbling all over the place, no balance, very little strength in his hands, very very short memory (ie: I'd put a cracker in his hand, tell him to eat it, he'd take a bite, then forget it was there. Look at it about 30 seconds or a minute later and go "what's this?"), getting goofy. At one point he blinked, looked at me and asked where this place and were any peace officers around and did he hurt anyone.

Very scary. :(

DC -- True, we're *assuming* it's low blood sugar as he's had an incident like this in the past, about 5 years ago, and that's what it was then. He also has a history of hypoglycemia and family history of diabetes. That's why we need to get him into the dr, to see. And to get him a monitor thingy to test for the sugar levels to be certain.

As for knowing his doctor... I haven't met her, but I do have her info. Just had to look it up.

Tammi I'm so glad they are able to get him in this afternoon! Makes me feel much, much better!

I tried all of that last night except the energy drink. Didn't think of that one. And, thanks to y'all and my grandparents (my grandpa is diabetic), we had honey on hand this time and that was the first thing I gave him when he started getting worse.

you could very easily kill him self-diagnosing low blood sugar and pumping food into him. You need to do a blood sugar test to determine low or high blood sugar.

And if he is at the point where he cannot pick himself up off his office floor, you need to call an ambulance.

Why that little no-good...

I just caught him lying to me about his dr appointment! He said he had one at 2 and was able to get in, and when I insisted that I'm going to go with him to make sure they have all his symptoms documented, he sheepishly said he'd better call and make sure he has it!

And yes, I know this is something we need to get him checked out on. Especially since it happened a second time. I'm operating on what instructions I was given in the past, and by his mom who is a nurse. And that's why I'm insisting I go in to the appointment with him, so he can't slide by.

I don't think *he* realizes how serious this is or can be, either. :(

Tammi, those symptoms are worse than I thought. I've had low blood sugar in the past, but never the symptoms your DH had. I would become irritable and shaky, but I recovered quickly after I ate.

I agree, if it gets to the point where he is on the floor, you need to call 911. Definitely go with him to the appointment. Men are terrible when it comes to taking care of their health.

The little ****. Now he says he can't get in until the 28th of this month. That is *unacceptable* so I'm on hold now and will either get him in NOW or a referral to someone who can see him *now*.

Listen, I would never give advice on the internet about something so serious, but I've been an ICU nurse for many years. The symptoms you describe would suggest his blood sugar was sooo low...as in the 20's! If this EVER happens again, you need to call an ambulance. It's unusual that it took him so long to "perk up." I'd be also suspicious of a neurological problem. Don't mean to sound so scary, but I think you really need to be aware of the severity of the situation.

Thanks Laura.

Leave it to a woman to get things done. He now has an appointment, first available with a dr not just a nurse, tomorrow morning at 10am and I am going with him. He is NOT going to bury his head in the sand for this one.
