Hawaii: Maui or Kauaii?

I think you were the one who suggested we spend more time at the north shore and less time in Waikiki and boy were you right! We came from Turtle Bay resort to Waikiki intending to spend 5 nights there but once we checked in our hotel we were on the Turtle Bay website looking for availability to go right back. We ended up spending only 2 nights in Waikiki instead of our original plan of 3 nights north shore, 5 nights Waikiki. I thought about your advice the entire time!

Not a fan of Waikiki at all. We drove down from Turtle Bay to eat there and explore. I found the place super stressful, so after dinner, we went back to Turtle Bay. This was before I got my first Blackberry in the early 2000s, so I can't even imagine what it's like now.

I'm going to the Big Island in December. Never been there. We'll see.

I'm not a fan of Waikiki, either, even though we stayed in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel this past trip--a dream of mine!

OTOH, it was my DS16's favorite, but he liked being next to the fancy mall with the Apple store. DS25's favorite was Hawaii, with its ranches and desert and wide-open spaces.

My DH took a helicopter ride over Kauai, and said it was amazing.

Kauai, for us but we like a bit quieter and more natural. Maui if you want a more built up experience.

kauai and the big island are my favorites. Less commercial and more things to do and see.

We went to both Maui and Kauai and I loved Kauai more it was just so beautiful. We did the tubing through the old sugar plantation drainage canals which was so fun and we did a Catamaran ride to see the Nepali coast. We stayed on in Poipu at Koaloa landing it was beautiful and had the best Mexican food at a tiny take out window called DaCrack. It always had a crazy line but was worth the wait.
