I can't believe I am considering this or posting it on the Dis. My DS and BIL are thinking of going to Hawaii for Christmas this year and we have been invited to come along. I know that it will be expensive but how expensive? Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels that are clean, save and inexpensive. That is if anything is inexpensive in Honolulu. We would need either two rooms for 3 adults each. (kids are now considered adults) or three rooms if DN come along. Since we are in Canada the airfare will be huge.

I am hoping that the costs will be so high we will be back at Disney for Christmas again this year but we have to explore the options. Hawaii is sort of her dream.

DH and I took a 2 week package to Hawaii with Air Canada some years ago. The cost was roughly comparable to a cruise--not a DCL cruise, either! We were able to get a non-stop flight from Toronto to Honolulu. There are two problems with going to Hawaii from Ontario--1. the flight is really long, and tiring--there's a significant time change from Toronto to Honolulu, we lost about a day catching up to the time change, and 2. you really need to spend 10 days to 2 weeks there to fully appreciate it (we spent 7 days in Honolulu and 7 days on Maui).
Hawaii is beautiful, you won't regret going.

I don't find the lodging in Hawaii to be the expensive part. The food is expensive. Rental cars are more expensive.

You can make Hawaii as expensive as you want. Or you can rent a condo or house, buy groceries at Costco and eat in. We have been to Hawaii 5 times (going for our 6th next month). We've done hotels, rented a house on the beach, done a condo, etc. I'm not a fan of Honolulu; it's been our least favorite island. However, you can get by there without a car. The bus system is decent; we used it daily. We have always rented cars on the other islands.

I've never felt the need to go for 2 weeks. We only ever stay a week. I can only handle so much beach.

It's been a few years since I went to Hawaii, but we really didn't spend a ton while we were there. We went to one or two nice restaurants and the rest of the time, we ate at cheap places. I also remember there being lots of cheap or free things to do, like visit the different beaches. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime!

We visited Hawaii in October. You will love it! The cost of airfare was horrible, but I think you will find hotels for decent prices. We stayed at Aston Waikiki Beach precruise. Not sure which island you will be visiting. We loved the hotel and our room was 150 a night. It was clean and had good ratings on trip advisor. This was our first time to Hawaii and I would love to go back! We took the NCL cruise so we could experience more islands. We used the ship as our floating hotel.
I would recommend checking with Costco travel agent. I have a friend that got a good deal with them. I would check forums on Hawaii through tripadvisor and I love cruisecritic. Even if you aren't considering a cruise, it still has info on Hawaii. For transportation, we used Hawaii23 and were pleased with them. We did rent cars at each island and we didn't feel prices were much higher than other places.
Good luck and have fun planning!
