When I began planning our return to Hawaii, I thought this question would be a "no brainer". We are flying into Honolulu, staying for 3 or 4 days at the Hale Koa, haven't decided exactly yet and at the end of our 15 days, flying out of Maui. We will stay in Ka'anapali for 6 or 7 nights, although I haven't decided exactly where. The dilemma is, WHERE DO WE GO IN THE MIDDLE? We have been to the Big Island twice, loved it. We have been to Kauai's north shore once, loved it. If we returned to Kauai, we would try the South shore for a change. If we returned to the Big Island, we would stay in the Volcano National Park at the Kilauea Military Lodge for 2 nights and then Waikaloa. What I really want to do is go to Molokai and stay in the tentalos that the Sheraton has at the Molokai ranch and doing the dude ranch thing, cattle herding, etc but I would be staying by myself. I can't even talk DH into this. We are taking 3 of our 4 "boys", 22, 18 and 15.
I was able to secure one first class seat each way, I am waitlisted for the second first class seat and the "boys" will be in coach. All with frequent flyer miles.

How about Lanai?

I am thinking that it might be too quiet and the resort there is really expensive and seems more geared to adults, rest and relaxation. We aren't really the "resting and relaxing" kind of family. :)

I think there are lots of things to do on Lanai. I'd love to go sometimes.

There is an ancient belief that every person is drawn emotionally, if not physically, to either the mountains or the sea. If this is true, Lanai will most surely set your spirit free. The range of activities here is as varied as the natural landscape -- from the mountains (Mauka) to the ocean (Makai), there are no limits to recreational possibilities. Along with the full compliment of diversions one would expect of a tropical destination, Lanai also promises an array of surprisingly unique experiences. From the refined to the hair-raising, you'll enjoy such diverse activities as four-wheel drive adventures, world-class golfing, clay target shooting, or even a proper game of croquet. And for shopping and dining opportunities, a stroll through Lanai City is an experience in itself.

And prices don't seem much higher than Sheraton Molokai-- at least at the Lodge at Koele. They are currently offering $309 per night. Or this package.

Your other options all sound good, too, except the dude ranch thing. I've been to Molokai and I'm not sure we'll ever need to go back (and we only spent 2-3 nights there).... talk about little to do.

Given the choice-- I'd probably go with the Volcanoes Park...

I definately vote for the Big Island or north shore of Kauai. Those two are always our favorites. We like Maui, but just love the other two quieter islands. I too thought there would not be enough to do on Lanai or Molokai.

We went to Lanai for the day and my brother and SIL stayed there for a few days when we were in Maui in July. There actually is more to do there than you would think. It's a quiet and beautiful island, good for a few days most definitely. They stayed at Manele Bay (GORGEOUS resort) but they had reciprocal privileges at the Lodge, which is where we went for lunch. Also beautiful, and they had lots of activities on the grounds.

Why not try shooting a Pm LuvTigger's way?

She lives in Hawaii & might be able to help you out;)

When we went for our honeymoon 4 years back we stayed a few days in Honolulu and a few days on the big island and I loved it. We stayed in Kona and loved it. Im hoping to get back soon and we going to stay on Maui some and not sure yet about the others.

I was able to get a great rate at the Hilton Waikaloa Village again and everyone really loved it there. So I guess I have made up my mind. We are back to the Big Island. I am thinking that I will call the Kilauea Military Camp and stay a couple of nights there. I like VNP.
