Having surgery on June 23rd......

.....went to an ENT yesterday. He said the usual "what brings you to see me...." I said, "My pcp says I have a deviated septum and thought you should take a look at it." He said, "Well let's see" he looks up my nose with his speculum and says, "HOLY MOLY I guess you DO!" Not only that but my "turbinates" the lower part, are very large. No wonder I'm a mouth breather. So we scheduled surgery for June 23rd and then I have to take two weeks off from work because of bleeding. Wish me luck with that- I'm not supposed to have any time off this summer.

Who out there has had this surgery done? What should I expect?

All I can say is I am glad I DID NOT go through with this surgery. I get chronic sinus infections. The ENT I went to said I had a bad deviated septum and a lot of polyps. I have been on Allegra-D ever since and have only had a few infections since. I don't mean to scare you...I have talked to about a half a dozen people that have had this surgery. They have all said it is awful afterwards. The pain is tremendous and the way they "pack" your nose with tampon-like things. You have to change those daily and it is unbearable. All have said that they wished they would've taken different avenues before having this surgery. Good luck!!

Good luck, Lorelei. I haven't had that surgery before. I know people that have and their doctors seem to forget to warn them about looking like they've been beat up afterwards (black eyes). But they said the surgery did a load of good for them.

I haven't experienced the surgery, but was just talking to my ENT about it. I have a deviated septum and other issues as well.

I guess it depends on where you have it done, but he said they don't use the packing any more, except in cases of excess bleeding (1 in 100). They insert stents for drainage.

I think it depends on what kind of work you do how long you'll be out. I'm in an office and he said it should be no more than a week.

Any surgery is scary, but if the long term benefits outweigh the short term inconvenience..... At least that's what I've been telling myself, and since I have a sinus headache right now, I'm listening. I haven't scheduled it yet, but I expect I will.

Right now I am on Allegra D (have been for 6 years)- Nasonex (2sprays twice a day) and Atrovent (also 2 sprays twice a day) plus the usual asthma meds. I'm taking tons of medicine right now and am hoping that by having the surgery I can get off some of them. He said the sprays probably aren't working because they can't even get where they need to be.

Thanks for everyone's input..... my doc said he had never seen a septum like this one...LOL... and the ENT seemed duly impressed with my deformity also.
