Having Second Thoughts about San Angel

I booked the CP package at San Angel for our first night but am having second thoughts after reading some bad reviews here on the board. We haven't eaten there in several years since neither of us loved the food. Even though the atmosphere is beautiful, I don't want to start the vacation off with a bad dinner. Any recent reviews would be appreciated. Thanks.

We just ate at San Angel Inn for lunch on Tuesday and thought it was fantastic!! Definitely one of the best meals of our trip from start to finish. I have to say that after experiencing it for myself I am surprised by all of the negative reviews.

MY DH and I ate there last Dec and we will not go back there again. The atmosphere was beautiful, but the food left us with wishing we had gone for a counter service anywhere else.

This place seems like a love or hate it type of place. I really don't see very many middle of the road reviews here. :confused3

Personally, I fall into the "love it" category. I think the food is great, and the servers Ive had were always attentive, cheerful, and pleasant. The menu may turn a few people off, but give it a chance! The first time we went, my family and I had absolutely no expectations, and we thought it was wonderful!

I hear alot of complaints about the bagged nachos....to me, it seems like a petty complaint. Your getting them for free after all.

I ate there in September and loved it. I had such a hard time deciding on what to get because almost everything on the menu sounded good (finally decided on the Tampiquena Con Chilaquiles). Our waitress was incredibly nice and attentive as well.

I'd also seen the seemingly majority negative reviews and it was one of the restaurants I really looked forward to. Even when we found out that we only had 8 TS credits total instead of 9, I refused to cancel this reservation and I'm glad I didn't.

I will say that I was one if the BIGGEST critics of this place. We love Mexico and were very disappointed in our experience there a few years ago. HOWEVER, we gave it another try after trying out the new Tequila bar and finding out the menu had been re-worked for San Angel Inn.

We were very plesently surprised! :thumbsup2 The food had come a long ways and gotten significantly better than it had been in the past. I would say that many of the negative reviews posted were based on how it used to be and I wouldn't have any second thoughts about eating there now with their new menu and quality.

This is not to say there couldn't be some improvements, but that is the case with all places for the most part.

We had the BEST desert all week there. Yummm. Atmoshpere was nice. But this is NOT the typical tex-mex fare most are used to. Not a taco on the menu, nor a wet burrito or a nacho. It is more like Mayan food.

Here's the deal: I wouldn't change an ADR due to bad reviews. I read the bad reviews regarding San Angel and still went. If I had to report back to you concerning San Angel, I would give you a bad review.

But here's the situation- I'm still very glad that I had the experience of dining at San Angel. In other words, everything there is edible (except for the Flan, but maybe I don't like Flan... first time I tried it was there.) Sure, they might take some shortcuts. The food might not be on the same tier of Le Cellier or Coral Reef in terms of quality. And its kinda crowded. And the whole experience seems like you're eating inside an aquarium because everyone in that line for the ride is just standing there... watching you eat. Looking at your food. Checking you out to see your facial expressions for signs of whether or not it is worth eating there themselves.

But guess what? When's the last time you ate volcano-side? When was the last time you eat in the middle of a piazza? And when was the last time that you ate where people look longingly like they want to trade places with you?

In other words, it's an experience. Even if you are not particularly fond of the food, you will be satisfied that you at least tried it.

But let me give you a few pointers to maximize your experience:

1. Don't try to just eat "Mexican" food. In other words, don't go for the burrito, enchiladas, etc. See San Angel doesn't serve ground beef. Therefore, those "Mexican" foods will have a texture and taste that will be different than some of the foods that you will be used to. It ain't Taco Bell, that's for sure. (But if you like that kind of food, San Angel's Cantina is a good place to eat for CS.)

2. For mixed veggies, they use something that is very similar to Veg-All. Remember those canned mixed vegetables- Veg-All? I'm telling you, that's what they use.

3. When they seat you, do not- repeat- DO NOT- allow them to seat you next to the restrooms. It's like restaurant purgatory. There's no ambience. There's no scenery there. It's just folks bumping your table on their way to the restroom. And you might even hear toilets flushing, I don't know. So if they walk you to the restrooms, gently and politely tell them that you will happily wait until they will get you a better table.

If you follow my advice, you might have a great time there. Personally, as someone who's not a big "Mexican" food eater, I ate the ceviche appy with the fish, and I liked my food. (I didn't eat the Veg-all, never liked that stuff.) My eldest DS did basically the same thing and loved it. But my DW and youngest DS are big-time Tex-Mex eaters and they were thoroughly disappointed, so much so that we will not be eating there again. But even they were glad they at least tried it.

So try it. You never know. There have been plenty of bad reviews regarding my favorite restaurant and we just keep going back year after year enjoying it. (Our favorite restaurant, by the way, is Coral Reef. DW loves it! I can basically eat anywhere. I'm flexible.)

Been there recently on a few trips. We always have a good experience, and food. :) It's one of our favorites, and yes, the atmosphere helps!

I think it is difficult, especially on these boards at times, to judge ANY restaurant by it's reviews. They seem so widely varied at times. For us, we would have never tried San Angel, Ohana's or Liberty Tree Tavern if we had gone by most of the reviews on the forums, or the site here. Well, we happen to enjoy all 3 of those thoroughly enough to eat at them nearly every trip! On the flip side of that, places like The Wave seem to get rave reviews, and we labeled it as a "never return to again" experience.

I always have to remind myself that reviews, especially restaurant reviews, are the opinion of the person writing them only. Your experience, and mileage, may vary greatly! :goodvibes

This is always the restaurant we start off the week with. In fact our next week starts this Sunday and we have ADR's for 7:35. :cool2::hippie:

I think our favorite restaurant right now is Coral Reef and they really use to get bad reviews.

You're going to find a lot of differing opinions on this place, I'm guessing mostly because they emphasize more traditionally Mexican cuisine rather than the tex-mex style most Americans are used to. But I'd have to say that, without going by other people's reviews because you really can't put stock in anyone else's reviews of food, if you tried it before and you didn't like it, it'd be logical for you to at least attempt to go elsewhere. If it's the only place you could get for the CP package, and you really want the seating for CP more than you want the food, then keep it.

We have given this place several tries, and will never go near there again. Well aware that it's not typical Tex-Mex food, but we're from Texas and don't always have the typical Tex-Mex food in/near home.

I kept giving it a chance because we love the decor, but will not go back. The food was mediocre; our steaks were both dried pieces of leather (typical Tex-Mex or not, that's just not well cooked food.) The piece of meat that they tried to pass as a steak was laughable.

But, if you can't get somewhere else and want to do the CP, I'd keep it. Even if you only have tolerable food, you'll still get to see CP (which, in my opinion, would be worth it.)

A key thing is that San Angel is Mexican Food, of they type you would get in Mexico City or other large cities. It is not the "Tex-Mex" which is common around the border and in most of the US.

We had lunch there last year and really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere is awesome! I would love to try dinner but the menu doesnt wow us

I wouldn't change a reservation due to bad reviews. Reviews are subjective. Give it a try and decide for yourself.

Sci Fi gets pretty bad reviews, and we have always had good meals there. Lots of folks have had less than favorable things to say about California Grill, but for me it has always been outstanding.

I don't pay much attention to reviews. I look at the menu and if it appeals to me, I give it a go!

I almost canceled our ADR at San Angel October 3 due to bad reviews, but it was hands-down the best dinner we ate(and we stayed for 6 nights). I wish I had it in front of me now!

LOL!.. :lmao:

Actually you would be hard pressed to find good tex-mex in most of the US.. What passes for "Tex-Mex" in most areas is a joke.. Even in Texas (we live in Dallas), you have to be somewhat picky and stay away from the chains.. On the Boarder as a chain, is NOT good tex-mex.. Cantina Laredo used to be a LOT better before it got bought and fanchised all over the place, now it is so so.

The point is, San Angel Inn is pretty good Mexican food, but it is not nearly as good as going to Mexico and getting it there.
