Having Lasik Friday...question

I couldn't read the big E on the eye charts.

Me too! I couldn't see the big E for 17 years! I would walk into a new eye dr and tell them I'll make this easy for ya, I can't see any of it! So it was a big difference when I went back for my week checkup and I could read on the 20/15 line(and they told me I had a chance to improve!)but it leveled out at 20/15. I have gone crazy with buying sunglasses! including my cute mickey ones!

Best of luck and you'll have to tell us how it went!

They are cute!!! I have a little face and have a hard time finding good sunglasses. So, I found the perfect oaklies a few years ago and I lost them early this year. I was in mourning and found out they were discontinued. But, I just found them on ebay and bid on them!!! It ends Sunday, and I have my fingers crossed I will have them soon after my surgery.

The doctor is going to tell you that you have to wear wrap type sunglasses post op. Not to burst your bubble, but you may wind up buying a pair of $12 glasses in Walgreens if your Oakley's aren't wrapped. The ones in your signature are the ones I'm guessing you lost. They look like the wrap around well enough. Basically, you can't have really thin sides so the sun can creep in and damage your corneas until they heal.

Oh wow thank you. Yes, the ones in the pic are the ones I lost. How long does that last?

To the OP, you DO realize that Lasik will not prevent you from needing reading glasses in a few years??? Doctors will/should tell you that. Lasik corrects your current vision problems, but needing reading glasses is just (to put it bluntly) something that comes with middle age.

When I had mine done, I didn't need reading glasses for 1.5 years (I never bothered to wear them before because there was not much difference). Slowly I noticed that my vision would get blurry when I was reading and I started wearing my OTC reading glasses. All is fine.

The price you pay for Lasik is directly related to how experienced your doctor is. As another poster said........this is NOT something that you want to "save" money on. I like a bargain as much as the next person, but I WILL NOT risk my health in order to save some money.

Wonderful procedure! The only downside????????? I am a designer sunglasses addict now (Chanel, Gucci, etc) because I can go into a boutique and buy them and don't need prescription lenses!!!:goodvibes

Yup, I know 40 is creeping up and so will reading glasses. But I figure I can buy the little pair at Walgreens that fit in a tube and I can put them in my purse.

I can't recall how long he said to wear them, but definitely for a few weeks if not a couple of months. I went the day after my lasik and bought a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses that have a thick stem, so I've worn them since.

OT, but on the night my car was hit and flipped, the only things I wanted from my car when I was still in the ER were my sunglasses (to see if they were unbroken) and my bluetooth. Not much survived the crash, but both of them did. My DH and DS retrieved them the next day. So, basically, I understand how much you miss the sunglasses you lost because I have a hard time finding glasses that I like on my face. When I find a pair, I want them to last.

I had my lasik done 4 years ago and I will be needing an enhancement soon, but I am attributing that to pregnancy. My eyesight has changed with each pregnancy I've ever had (3) and this is the first one since the Lasik procedure was done.

As for the procedure itself, I would say it was the best $$ I've ever spent. I could not read the clock on my nightstand without glasses before the surgery, and I have 20/20 vision now. My surgery cost appx 2700 back then. From how my doctor explained it to me, the cost varies depending on how severe a correction is needed. Mine came with lifetime enhancements covered at any affiliated location nationwide (I had mine at The Laser Center)

I spent 19 seconds in total in "surgery". The most uncomfortable part was the pressure they put on your eye while performing. I would equate it to rubbing your eyes hard to where your vision is blurred or blacked out. No biggie by any measure.

Recovering-my eyes did feel dry for the first week or two. I used the drops I was given faithfully, and took extra care to avoid rubbing or touching my eyes for the first few weeks. I did notice that I was slightly more sensitive to light, so I wear sunglasses more frequently than I did previously, but after a few months, I either became accustomed to the change, or able to cope with it. It doesn't really bother me anymore.

I also notice just a bit of a "halo" effect on lights from time to time. Most of the time I have it when I'm driving or out at night and it is or has been raining. This annoyed me at first as well, but like the light issue, I don't really even notice it anymore. Kind of like when you first get a pair of glasses and have to spend a couple of weeks getting used to them so you don't notice seeing the edges of your frames anymore.

All in all, very well worth my money, and so much easier to deal with than contacts-especially with having a bunch of kids to keep up with. Also makes travelling nice since I don't have to lug around contact cases/solutions, etc.\

Good Luck!

Thank you for the description. I never heard about the pressure like that.

Less then 24 hours left.

They put something on my eye to help hold my eyelids open. That was what the pressure was from. It wasn't painful by any means.

I think you'll be very pleased with the outcome. Just relax and know that it will be over literally before you know it. You'll notice a change in your vision immediately. Had they not given me valium to relax me prior to the procedure, I could see well enough to drive home immediately. Less than 24 hours later I was at 20/20.

they just called to make sure everything was set and I asked them what my current vision is without glasses. She said 20/200 in both eyes.

I had the procedure a few months ago and am very happy. I DO have to wear readers for almost anything close up.
I wore bifocals before the procedure (but I could go without glasses at home while working on the computer). My doc told me I would "probably" need my cheaters all the time for close work after the procedure. I was hoping he was wrong..... But nope, he was right. I can't even read stuff in the store. Have to have those readers for all that...
Was it worth it? YOU BETCHA!! I can drive without RX glasses (any sunglasses work for me~!) but I can't read a map. I DO have bifocal sunglasses that I take on vacation so I can read while outside in the sun.

I had dry eyes for a few days (maybe a couple of weeks) after. And I still have some halo effects at night. I think it is either a bunch better, or I am just used to the halos.
I have to agree about the pressure during. I didn't like that either. It was over very quickly though. I was told to go home and take a nap and it would feel like I had sand in my eyes (they were right on). When I woke up , the sand in the eye feeling was gone and I could SEE :)
I had two different drops to use for a couple of days, and then I had artificial tears that I used for the next couple of weeks.
I also had the blood streaks where they cut the flap and the doc said that would absorb. It took a few days and DID absorb. I looked pretty scary for a couple of days ;)
I also had to wear this goggle thing while sleeping so I didn't dislodge the flaps. That was only the first day or so.
The wrap around sunglasses were for a day or two (according to my doc) just while the pupils were so dilated. Then I was free to wear whatever I wanted!
I did have a slight panic attack when I couldn't see.... :confused3 Never had that happen before. THe doc was very good and told me it happens all the time (doubt it  ) but he sure made me feel better.

I LOVE riding the motorcycle without glasses.

Good luck! YOu will LOVE IT!!!

By the way, I bought COACH sunglasses on my way home from the doc's the day after surgery!!!!

Mine was something like 15/200 before. Yeah...I was the one always asked to read the fine legalese print on documents. Then it went to 20/20

Afterwards your close-up vision will be out whack a bit. But you'll love it anyway.

Best of luck!

I buy dozens of those (and I get the sunglasses off ebay ;) ).

It's almost here! I bet you can't wait, it has to be exciting to know you'll see so well w/o glasses or contacts.

My husband had his Lasik consult yesterday. Unfortunaltly he isn't a candidate and he is really bummed. They did say he could have PRK laser surgery. Since we were clueless to what that even was I read a little, and will have to do some research to see if thats the best option for him or just stick with glasses.

When you are able let us know how it went! Good luck tomorrow.:)

Yes, I'm going to try to stay away from the DIS tomorrow. They tell you not to read the day of surgery. I am nervous, and excited. OMG after 30 years no glasses.

I don't know anything about PRK. I hope it works out for him.

Looking forward to seeing posts on the otherside of LASIK, ImMarcik
