Having food in the rooms?

Hi everyone,
I went to the store today and bought a bunch of things I'd like to bring with us: instant oatmeal, Easymac, granola bars, crackers, etc. I figure the space they take up in the luggage will be replaced with souvineers! :thumbsup2

My thought was that the kids will inevitably get hungry in the room, and I'd hate to have to shell out cash everytime they'd like a snack. Also, it would be great to have breakfast in the room on occasion. We have the dining plan only for the first 3 days of our trip. The remainder we'll be at POP with no dining plan (and no fridge!) so it's mainly the 2nd half of our stay that I'm thinking about.

I was also thinking about bringing bagels, and using the toaster in the food court to toast them up. My dh was mortified by this suggestion. He thinks that if we toast it there, CM's will think we took it but didn't pay for it. He also thinks it will be embarrassing to do this. Do people ever do this? I was going to try to use the food court microwave for heating up the water for instant oatmeal or Easymac, but then I remembered I have a little Hot Shot hot water dispenser that I can bring and use.

Do you think this is crazy? We'll definitely be eating 95% of our meals out, but I thought it would be nice to have another option.

If I were to bring food, it would only be snacks that you could have without heating things up like crackers, chips, etc. Just my opinion... :)

I always pack snacks and breakfast items for the room. My DH hates to get up in the AM so I just brought breakfast bars and canned fruit for breakfast in the room; that way I didn't have to drag my DD over to the food court to heat up anything.

Oh- canned fruit! I didn't think of that. My kids love the kind that come in the little snack cups.
Thanks!

I'm far too lazy to trek to the food court to heat things up, so I only bring quick snacks like Nutrigrain bars, granola bars, fruit leather, etc.

When staying at WL we saw a woman bring a bag of bagels to toast. No one said anything. She even used the condiments. If memory serves correctly they sell some of those items in the gift shops. Also check out the confirmed snack list on the DDP section. I think one of the confirmed snack is a box of donuts. yep just check and it is. Buy them while you still have the dining plan and use them for later. Here's the link for the snacks.

Its amazing what is offered. We are printing the list before we go. Love it!!

If it would cause serious financial hardship for you to pay for snacks/breakfast at the resort, then by all means, feel free to heat up oatmeal, toast your own bagels, etc., at the food court. The microwaves and toasters are for the use of guests, who want to prepare their own food.

However, I would only do it if spending the money on snacks at the resort would mean I absolutely had to cut corners on some other part of the trip. I think it's WAY too much trouble, for the few dollars that you'll save, unless those few dollars will make or break the trip for you. The food court at Pop isn't horribly expensive, and the snacks you can get there (Mickey cookies, etc.) are part of the fun of the trip for kids.

Hi we live in Orchard Park and we'll be at disney from Aug. 14-25. It maybe too late but did you check any of the fridge swaps on the budget board. We're signed up for one in August at ASMo and it's free .

Hey- we're in Orchard Park too, and we're going to be there the exact same time! My kids go to Ellicott.

I checked the fridge swaps but none were available for our dates.

No, not a financial hardship at all! I'm just a serious tightwad, trying to be clever! My poor husband is constantly embarrassed by me.

Those are what I packed and I just put them in a big zip lock bag to avoid any possible issue with leaking.

I usually buy the bags of bagels that they sell in the resort gift shop (lenders or some other brand).
My kids don't like them toasted, so I don't heat them up, but i certainly would if they wanted them that way.

There's nothing wrong with doing that, if that's the way you like it.

Unless you're in a building right next to the food court, keep in mind the distance that can be involved just to get there...!

I always like to bring snacks and stuff like that (things like cracker, cheeses and lunch meat (to keep in the fridge), snack cakes, etc.) but we also buy a loaf or bread to make lunch on the days that we don't want to spend much on lunch. I like to bring instand oatmeal (in the little cups) and that works great for breakfast, I just run water through the coffee maker for the hot water and add it to the oatmeal, stir it in and you've got an easy hot breakfast.

I think bringing things with you will be fine, even if you need to use the toaster go for it. Sometimes food in the parks or CS costs to much to shell out for everytime someone just wants a little snack, so I see nothing wrong with bringing your own and saving a little on your food budget.

I have not brought things like easymac, but I have brought instant oatmeal packs for breakfast. I just ran water thru the coffee maker to make hot water to pour over the oatmeal (instant you just pour water and let sit for a few minutes) it worked great.
I would not think anything about using th toaster or microwave. I would love to pop some popcorn (my DS4's favorite nightime snack) but I will refrain due to the smell, lot of people do not like the smell of micro popcorn.

We are bringing breakfast, those little individual boxes of cereal and I will keep some milk in the fridge. We are on the DDP and will eat bfast out about 2-3 during out trip. Just a quick and easy bfast in the room and head to the buses!

Older ds popped a couple of bags of popcorn we brought from home in the microwave at POR last week. In the week, we've bought the microwave popcorn in the food court/gift shop at an astronomical price. We got smart this time and brought some from home. We don't spend much time in the resort food courts, so I haven't really noted how the microwave and toasters are used by guests. I did notice guests at POR reheating restaurant leftovers a couple of times this past week.

well if they sell Popcorn there then it is ok to pop it. I have to remember to do that and reheat food in micro. I also have no problem with using the toaster for your own bagels being they also sell bags of bagels there that you will need the toaster for. I am lucky that i got the SSR upgrade so i can do all my cooking in my room and have my tea and breakfast in my room while we all get ready

When I take food with me, I pack it in a hard plastic container like a clear shoebox with a lid. ( You can get these at WalMart for about $1.50.) That way my pretzels don't get smashed and the container gets repacked either with shampoo and sun screen bottles or breakable souveniers.

I agree with the other posters who offered suggestions on cereal and donuts from the gift shop as a DDP snack. My kids have used these for breakfast. Ditto leftover desserts from too much DDP food the night before.

While I understand you won't have a fridge at POP, I've stayed on property before they even added fridges to the mods. Though my kids may WANT toasted bagels and easymac as breakfast or snacks, the rule is that those are for home or when we have a condo with kitchen. In the WDW rooms, they get cereal. leftovers, granola bars or boxed donuts. I have been known to pick up milk in the gift shop the night before and stick it in the ice bucket before the fridge days, and I travel with ONE box of cereal, a bunch of plastic bowls and plastic spoons.

All this because I am on vacation, too. I want them to eat something before they leave the room and usually don't want to take the time to "stop" for breakfast. I'm also one of those people who think that if you want to do cooking of any sort beyond heating in the microwave in the food court, then maybe a condo/villa/studio unit would be better.

As far as later snacks - nope! They are ZONKED!
