Having a hard day

I just learned that my new puppy (who just turned one last month) suffers from a condition common to Cavaliers called syringomyelia. Sigh... It's going to be a long road with a possibly very poor outcome. I have to say, I'm pretty bummed today with bouts of tears, but I keep trying to focus on the possibility that he'll live at least a somewhat normal life! If y'all have any pixie puppy dust, please send it Cody's way!

I'm so sorry to hear about Cody. Having a sick fur baby is heart breaking.

Sending you some love :lovestruc , pixie dust :wizard: and a hug  .

He's adorable!!! We have a lab/shephard mix named Cody. In the past three years, we have lost 2 dogs and a cat. So hugs and prayers for Cody.:flower3:

I feel your pain. About a year and a half ago we purchased a gorgeous male Golden Retriever puppy. He was one of 2 remaining puppies from the litter and was so sweet and interested in us that it was an easy pick. We were given paperwork from the vet that vaccinated the litter stating that there were no notable health concerns and no heart murmur was heard. So, thinking that he was a healthy guy we took him to our vet expecting everything to be confirmed that he was healthy. Well, that day was not uneventful. We found out that he had quite a loud heart murmur and were further told, when he was seen by a cardiologist, that he has a grade 5 out of 6 (6 being the worst). We were advised that he could have fainting spells during exertion and could ultimately die unexpectedly at any time. I was crushed and was driven to tears for days. With all the dogs I have raised I had never once had one with a health problem like this. I thought about the situation alot and decided that I was the best person to take care of him and that's why our paths crossed. We have watched him and cared for him as we do our other dogs, but have never treated him like he is sick. But for the fact that he takes medication and has to go for yearly ultrasound checkups on his heart, you would never guess that he is so sick. He is the picture of health and is absolutely a gorgeous looking dog with a very sweet, albeit mischevious, disposition. I never think of him as sick or dying except once a year when the reality slaps me in the face at the cardiologist's office. He has just turned 2 years old and the doctors have told us that he may be showing changes in his heart muscle that could mean a deterioration in his health. The point I am trying to make here is this: love Cody for the wonderful dog he is, for however long he has on this earth. Make his life full and loving and enjoy all the little things about him and his personality. You were meant to have him. You were meant to care for him. Enjoy all the time you have with him and do whatever is best for him. If something should happen and he should leave you quicker than he might if he was completely healthy, you and he will know that he was loved completely.
I believe in this for myself and how I care for my pup Thumper. It gives me some comfort with his situation, and hopefully it will put things into perspective for you too and give you some solace.

Me and my pups will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. My oldest turns 1 on Monday.

Thank you! I appreciate everyone's remarks, but I want you to know that that your outlook is exactly the same as mine. I'm not mad at the breeder as she is extremely caring and competent and loves this breed of dog to distraction. I'm not mad at anyone except maybe fate right now. Cody is the BEST dog I have ever been owned by. He is just perfect. Even my DH said that he's such a good dog and that's high praise from him. He's very particular about dogs. It's just something Cav's are more susceptible to. Bad breeding in generations past caused this condition among lots of smaller breeds like Griffons, Chihauhuas and Cavs. It's a condition caused by a normal sized brain in too small a skull and it causes neurological problems. He's been showing signs and unfortunately, pups who show signs before the age of 2 are usually the worst afflicted. There's medicine and surgery, but we will try the small stuff before looking into the big stuff.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the kind words. That's why I love our community here!! I knew y'all would understand!

I will keep you and Cody in my prayers .....

There is nothing like the love and companionship of a wonderful dog, is there?

Make the most of every day, and keep smiling. :)

He is such a cutie!
I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I will keep you in my thoughts and pray for a good outcome.

Cody is adorable! He's luck to have you too. :goodvibes

Pixie dust coming your way pixiedust:

cheers,
:flower3:

Aww! I will be praying for little Cody, and hopefully there will be a happy outcome. He is already lucky to have a loving and caring owner. I'll be thinking of you both.

I am sending Cody tons of pixie dust. I have a Cavalier and was unaware of them being susceptible to this condition. They are such sweet and lovable dogs.

Oh, what horrible news! It's a devastating and painful condition. I truly hope your furbaby is spared the worst of the disease.

Keep the faith---our Standard Poodle was recently diagnosed with melanoma and while we had surgery for her, the vets are not optimistic. We are though because as our firstborn, she is just as important to us as our human children. Praying health over Cody and peace of mind to you.

Awwwww! He's such a cutie!:lovestruc

Pixie dust to you and that cute little sweetie. pixiedust:
