Haven't flown in nearly 15 years...what do I need to know?

I understand al the TSA rules/regs. That's not what I'm talking about. I see things like checking in 24 hours in advance (WT-HECK?!? ) and realize it's probably a whole new world out there now...LOL!

I'll be flying out on Delta and back on US Airways.

Give me all your best tips and tricks! (Please? LOL!)

Oh, and can I pack clothes in my computer bag that I'll be using as one of my carry-ons? (Thereby reducing what I need to pack in my checked baggage to keep costs down there?) I already have DH trading out at work for a smaller laptop for that week so he won't have to pack the bohemoth he normally carries!

The people you see checking in exactly 24 hours in advance are most likely flying Southwest. Southwest does not offer seat assignments and passengers board in the order they checked in. That is why people check in as early as possible.

I fly US Airways and Delta a lot. There is no need to check in 24 hours in advance. If you plan on checking a bag I believe it is $2 cheaper per bag if you checkin online.

Actually, checking in as early as possible is always a good idea. If a plane is oversold, you have a better chance of not being bumped if you checked in early. If you are waiting for an upgrade, your chances are partly based on what time you checked in. Also, seats which have been held back (such as exit row seats) are often opened up at the 24 hour mark and you can switch to a more desirable seat if you check in early.

Very true, its been awhile since I have not had an upgrade clear in advance but if I was waitlisted I would check in 24 hours in advance!

Also, it is always better to have a seat assignment even if you are not sitting together. Those without seat assignments will be bumped before those with seat assignments.

Are you planning on using ME (Magical Express) and RAC (Resort Airline Counter)?

I mentioned that because if you are planning on using the RAC to take your baggage back to the airport, you don't want to check in at the 24 hour mark when departing. It essentially locks you out of the system and you won't be able to use RAC to send your baggage ahead of you.

You have to take off your shoes when you go through security.

On Continental, you can bring your own set of headphones (like for an iPod) to watch the movies. Otherwise they will sell you a set for a couple bucks.

Most airlines use e-ticketing instead of paper tickets. When you get to the airport you check in using a credit card or confirmation number.

You can use any type of carry-on as long as it fits in the overhead or under your seat. Some people don't even check bags because they are able to put everything in their carry-on. Your checked baggage is per item (up to a certain weight limit) so you should try to consolidate into one.
