Have You Turned On Your Heat Yet?

Now I know we all live in vastly different geographic regions, but I live in southern Indiana and it seems to be a “thing” to try to hold out until November 1st to turn on the heat.

Personally, I don’t care what the date is, if it gets below about 66 in the house, the heat is going on. Ours went on for the first time last week. It kicks on some in the morning but not much after that.

Next week it is supposed to get back up close to 80 for a day or two, so the a/c might get turned back on. :D

So, do you have a date you try to hold out for to turn on the heat?

I have, but it is unusual that I would need to this early where I live. We're having very chilly nights though.

No, not here in Florida. I have managed to go without AC the last couple of nights, but I may have to run it tonight. I don’t turn on heat at all, as the house is well insulated and rarely goes below 65 even when the temps outside are unusually cold. I do sometimes open the blinds on the south facing windows and let the sunshine in if we are having a cold snap. I also have a wood burning fireplace I can use if necessary. It’s kind of fun when it gets cool enough to light a log. 🪵🔥

We’re in the South, &, yes, we’re some of the ones who try to hold out until November 1st.

So, even though we had a couple of chillier days this week, we still haven’t yet turned on our heat. Today, the high was 71 w/ a low of 46, but it’s supposed to gradually warm back up the rest of this week… so I think we’ll make it this year.

Not yet! We live in the midwest. We usually do not need the heat until mid-late November (sometimes not even until December, but much rarer) when temps start dropping. The heat is set to kick on at 65 degrees. It has only done it one time so far when I noticed it kick on yesterday morning after I got up at 3:30am. I turned it off because it didn't feel that cold.

We feel most comfortable when the house is cooler and I can have either a heated blanket or 2-3 blankets on when sleeping.

There was another thread like this not too long ago.
My thermostat is automatic, it is set to certain temps. So whenever it gets above/below that, it turns the AC/heat on automatically. Can't imagine having to do that manually anymore. Haven't touched it in years.

Our DD was visiting last weekend and she was cold, so I turned it on for her. Turned it off when she left. I try to wait as late as possible. My DH will want it on long before I do. We are just south of Baltimore.

Our heat is never "off". Even in the middle of summer here it can get very chilly at night; 10C or less is not uncommon. The thermostat gets set to 20C and when the temperature drops below that, it comes on.

We haven't turned the heat on yet, but we have added an extra blanket to the bed and dug out the pajama pants & thermal socks. I also find excuses to bake something to warm up that side of the house when it's a little colder outside.

Honestly, I'm hoping for a much, MUCH lower electric bill this month. :)

Turn on the heat?! I'm waiting to be able to turn off the AC!!
Currently 86 degrees outside, 74 in the house. AC set at 76 during the day, my wife sets it at 71 at night because she can't sleep if it gets any warmer in the house at night.
Supposed to be 93 tomorrow.
If we have a normal fall, we will be able to have both the ac and heat off for all of November and into December.

Same for me. Years ago when our kids were little, it seemed like I needed the heat on by the 3rd week in September. My husband would complain, I’d tell him the heat goes by the thermometer, not the calendar. The kids always had a lot of ear infections, so I’d also tell him I’d rather pay the gas bill than the doctor bill. It was unusually warm this year & I hadn’t used it before we went on vacation last week. It was supposed to get down to low 50s or high 40s while we were gone. I left the heat set at 65 & that’s what the house was when we got home on Saturday. It was 46° & drizzling that day, so I turned it up to 68 & was comfortable. It’s kicked on a few times since then, but it’s not constantly running.
