We went to Liberty Island and saw the Statue Of Liberty up close and all I can say is WOW! it is so huge and amazing to stand in front of.
We had gone to NY just 5 weeks after 9/11, but of course, Liberty Island was closed so we only saw it from the Staten Island Ferry.
Let me tell you, if you have never been, you have got to see it up-close. It is truly amazing.

I wish I could post a pic of it, but my husband and son took the digital camera on their "backpacking in the Mountains" trip so my daugher and I were stuck with a disposable camera. grrrr....
After we get the pics developed maybe my DD can scan and post it.

I can say I felt the same way when I visited, it is a much more awesome sight than I ever imagined it could be, and sure makes all sorts of feelings go through you body and spirit. Nothing can compare to actually be standing there in person beside it.

It is well worth the time to visit if you have the opportunity...very awesome indeed.::yes::

I'm lucky. Many years ago I got to go inside the Statue! It was when I was in high school, about 100 years ago....actually sometime in the 1970's. In those innocent days, you could walk all the way to the crown--the arm was off limits. The view was amazing. Living in NY, I guess we used to take it for granted--it was just there........but now it has even more meaning for us.

Spectacular, Isn't it? I climbed it when I was 2 or 3 years old. Yes I did climb it. I do remember climbing step after step after step!
And I did climb it again some years later. Too bad you miss out on that experience today!
But up close and personal is the way to see her.

I can see the Statue from my office window.

I've been there several times, walked all the way up to the crown once -- and I can understand why they no longer allow access, it was just a narrow, winding stairway, hard to evacuate people if there's a problem. the arm was closed to tourists in 1916, I think.

did you go inside and see the original torch?

and the view of lower Manhattan from the pedestal is magnificent -- though bittersweet. if you know where the Towers stood, you definitely notice their absense.

::yes:: Climbed to the crown when I was a kid. We went over to the island a few years ago. My DH sees it every day when he's at work. He works in an industrial park right on the road to Liberty State Park.

::yes:: She IS beautiful! When I was in 6th grade, we took a class trip to New York and got to climb the stairs up to the crown. It was amazing!!
