Have you noticed grocery prices creeping up? Predictions for sharp increases to come.

Don't forget about powdered milk. It may not be the greatest option but it would do in a pinch.
I remember my mother making powdered milk and mixing it with fresh milk. She introduced it to us gradually. First it was three quarters fresh milk and then half fresh and half powdered. By the time finances finally improved we were drinking one quarter fresh milk with three quarters powdered. She also used canned milk in almost all of her cooking. I think that was also around the time that she began to drink her coffee black. :)

I live in CA. I can still get milk here for a little over $2.00 too. It's the cheapest store brand, but it hasn't gone up any drastic amounts - if anything it had fallen for awhile (below $2) and has now gone back to the "regular" prices of $2.12 or so.

Bacon is a bit higher, but I can get the cheaper brands for less than $3/package (12.5 oz if I remember right). Before I usually got them for about$2.50/package. Meat in general doesn't seem to be much different than before, as long as you shop sales.

Bread I buy at the Oroweat bakery store. I continue to get amazing deals that way. I can get 2 big bags FULL of bread-type goods - whole wheat bread, bagels, English muffins, sourdough bread, etc. - for under $8 typically. PLUS they give me a free item if I spend more than $7, and they give "points" each time I shop so that every few weeks I get 2 free items! The middle man and delivery/transportation costs drive up food costs faster than raw material cost increases - so find ways to source foods where those costs can be lowered/removed like this, and you will find cheaper prices.

The USDA is predicting food prices to only go up about 3% in 2011 OVERALL - not that you won't see some items spike more, but other things may drop to compensate. I suspect that 3% may be a bit optimistic for what many families will experience, but I don't think it's going to be too terribly worse. Spot craziness may rule on some things as speculators take over for awhile (pork bellies anyone?), but then things will normalize.

Uh oh! Looks like we may be too late already! This is what I'm finding wherever I look!!

Amazon has these powdered eggs for $25. Each container has the equivalent of 81-90 eggs. Eggs are still on sale here for under $1/doz...maybe this would be a better idea? http://www.ehow.com/how_2304324_make-powdered-eggs.html

Groceries have been steadily climbing here. I miss $2/lb butter. Sugar, flour, canned goods, milk, bread...all the basics have been inching up. We dot't eat bacon any more. Too expensive. Its probably better for my waist line.:rotfl:

I know 3 percent doesn't sound like a lot but for a lot of us it IT's a huge amount

We have noticed prices going up. Eggs used to be $1.29 a dozen for Large Eggs - Now they are $1.59

Milk went from $2.58 to over $3

Bacon --- OMG!!!! Regular price averages nearly $5 for the cheap brands. I saw a 2 for $5 special and bought 20 lbs and stuck them in the freezer.

Bread is up about .20 a loaf. Produce seems to be higher, but we're moving into off-season so it's tough to tell.

I went to our local Acme store today, never shop there because their prices are to high. I went to pick up an extra turkey for the freezer for the winter. They had frozen turkeys on sale for $ .39 a lb. I picked up a 13lb bird.

I checked the bacon prices and it was $7.99 a lb. and butter was close to $6.00 I told dh we are not buying anything in here due the prices and I am happy shopping at Aldi's, Wal-Mart, BJ's and my local Shop Rite. I will be using more coupons. I do have a bread machine and love it. Another option is the frozen bread in the freezer section.

So my question is will you buy special rolls for turkey day or do the old fashion way and just serve regular slice bread and butter. The rolls are really good and I say treat yourself on the Holiday.

I will continue to make my own rolls. Gold medal flour at acme was ninety nine cents for a five pound sack this week if you bought ten items from the spotlight savings category. I got ten sacks. They also had wesson oil for one ninety nine for forty eight ounces in the same spotlight section. Oil, salt, yeast, warm water and flour are all you need to make some nice crusty italian rolls. In fact, the italians dont even put salt in there bread so you can leave it out if you want.

We ahve started to stock up where we can. Nothing major yet, but little by little. I just wish that I had a deep freeze. I too use coupons and will by the perishables that are about to expire so that I can get a discounted price. I figure why not when milk and juice will be gone by the time is expires, and meat products can be frozen. But it's the cost of produce that's getting me too. Cucumbers use to be $.99, now they are $1.29, that's one item that I have noticed and pretty much cut form the budget. If an item that I wants on sale I'll buy it, other wise I'll pass. Let's hope that our garden actually grows next summer.

Prices are way up here in Barely too esp bacon but all meat has taken a jump in the last few weeks...We thought meat prices was hig central Fl when we was down there mid Oct shopping but now the prices here have taken a jump too.

Sadly right now is not the time for us to be stocking up in fact I'm trying very hard to use my stock up.....we have to be out of our house a couple of days after Thanksgiving, DD has to be out of her house the Sunday after thanksgiving...she's moving here tho so food I don't use that she will use can stay here.

I not moving much food the 1000 mile move......OHHHHHHHHHH fine time for DH to retire with everything going up, but it's time for him to hang up his hat he just can't do the work anymore....

Not good. Ugh.

I've heard of doing that with the milk too.

I have noticed the price of food going up too. Butter about gave me a heart attack yesterday. Stupid holiday baking. :lmao:

I can only drink the lactaid milk so that never goes on sale or has many coupons. I do a lot of shopping at the farmers market so I do store a lot of stuff from there. I did get a coupon for free milk yesterday for buying general mills cereal. I wonder if I can use that for lactaid. I will get it and freeze it.

I have a deep freezer. I call it the body casket. It came with the house and I could fit two adult males in that thing. I have been thinking of replacing it for a more energy efficient one but with the price of food going up, I think I will keep it and just try to fill it up. I am not a big turkey eater but thinking of getting a couple while they are on sale.

I get my bacon from the farmer and have been paying about $3 a pound for it. I still have coffee in my freezer from my hawaii trip so I am good with that.

My farmer's market is closing soon so I will be doing a lot of purchasing stuff that can be frozen, squash, onions, green peppers, carrots, meats and beans. Lots of navy and speckled butter beans in my freezer

The coupon thing is a blessing and a curse for me. I am single but a lot of coupons now require you to buy two or more of something for a dollar off. I would prefer to only buy one and get less money off so it can be doubled.

I noticed today that margarine was higher too. Why?

I had to pick up my margarine/butter today because we were out. On Saturday it was $2.19, today it was $2.59. Should have picked it up on Saturday. I use the Land o Lakes butter spread with Olive Oil. Wonder if that could be frozen? At 40cents in a few days, it would be out of budget very quickly.

Maybe we should list items others wouldn't think could be frozen but can be...

I found out that if you use them just for adding to stews, soups, etc, not for salads, you can freeze mushrooms. I got a huge bag from the farmer when buying my peppers to freeze this year. It was a bit time consuming, but boy am I glad I did it.

Here's the procedure I used the steaming version, and I used plain old lemon juice for the "agent".

Steaming:

Before steaming, pre-treat mushrooms for 5 minutes by dipping them into an anti-darkening agent consisting of 1 teaspoon of lemon juice or 1 1/2 teaspoons of citric acid to a pint of water. After pre-treatment, steam whole mushrooms 5 minutes (buttons or quarter for 3 1/2 minutes; sliced for 3 minutes). Cool promptly and drain. Package leaving 1/2 inch of headspace. Seal, label and freeze.

Mushrooms... I hadn't even thought about them yet. I even like them canned or frozen and added to dishes much less fresh.

I wish that there was some way to predict what will go up a lot...

.

Land O Lakes butter was $2.99 tonight at Superfresh, but I noticed other brands like Keller's or Breakstone's at $6.99. They can't be serious, I thought. Until I read this thread.

Only buy bacon once or twice a year. I can live without it if the prices others are quoting are accurate.

I freeze butter and/or margarine all the time. I put it in the freezer as soon as I purchase it. When I run out I just take it out the freezer and put it in the refrigerator and use it as I need. I have been doing this for about 20 years and never had a problem.
