Have you noticed grocery prices creeping up? Predictions for sharp increases to come.

Land O Lakes butter was $2.99 tonight at Superfresh, but I noticed other brands like Keller's or Breakstone's at $6.99. They can't be serious, I thought. Until I read this thread.

Only buy bacon once or twice a year. I can live without it if the prices others are quoting are accurate.

Jim

we buy bacon on sale and freeze it too, we also freeze

Butter
Milk
Cheese
Bread
Onions(cut up)
Celery
Bell Peppers(cut up)
Mushrooms
Apples (slices)
Berries (strawberry, blueberry,blackberry,raspberry) whole
corn (whole ears)
Green beans
Peaches
Meats( steak, ground round, fish, shrimp, clams, scallops)
Coffee
Bacon
sausage

That is all pretty much what we freeze. The first 4 are our main staples so freeze as much as possible and use it FIFO :)

This might be a stupid question but how do you freeze milk...........just in the plastic jug it comes in?

My local Weis Markets (here in the Northeast) has Coke 12 packs 5/$12, Birdseye frozen veggies 10/$10, and Thomas English Muffins/Bread on BOGO. I also noticed that the 24 pack of cat food we usually buy for $11 was down to ten this week. :confused3

I thought that I read that you couldn't freeze eggs still in the shell? I think that they have to be cooked too.

I once froze apples and they turned to mush. Maybe I left them in there too long...

That's another thing. You can only freeze certain items for so long before the quality starts to disintegrate. I seem to remember that cooked items and processed foods have shorter shelf lives while raw meat and poultry have the longest.

I'd love to know how you freeze apples, too. That's another thing we go through a lot in this house.

Not a stupid question at all. You can freeze milk in the plastic jug it came in but you will want to open it and remove a small amount before freezing. The water in the milk will expand when it freezes and will split the container if it has no room to go. The cream will separate out so you will need to shake it well before serving once it thaws.

I don't freeze eggs in the shell. I scramble them up first, then pour them into coverable ice cube trays. I use them for baking mostly (2 cubes = 1 large egg). I've never frozen cooked eggs, but I suppose you could.

I wish that I didn't have such a small fridge now. I suspect that a new freezer is not in my budget right now.

But then a person can stock up on a lot of pantry items too. Again, I wish I knew what might be going up a lot. Does anyone know of websites that predict such things?

What a great idea. :)

You can freeze raw eggs but not in the shell. If you freeze both whites and yolks together you should scramble them. Otherwise the yolks get more like silly putty. Egg whites can be frozen without adding anything. Egg yolks should have sugar or salt stirred in to inhibit the gelling process. You can freeze hard boiled egg yolks but freezing cooked egg whites isnt recommended. Frozen eggs should be used within a year.

I haven't read this whole thread admittedly, but our prices have not increased that much for sure. I purchased a half gallon of 2% milk the other day for like $1.98 and a lb of bacon for $2.50 - $.75 coupon. I actually have done a whole lot better the past two or three months with my grocery bill than in the past. I shop the sales and use coupons. My monthly grocery budget used to be $320. Lately I've gotten through the month for $150-$170 for a family of 3 (and, no, I haven't cut out a bunch of stuff either)

Thank you...I am going to have to try it.

Thank you to the posters that mentioned Target has great grocery prices. I found that (for the most part) to be true!

Thanks! :)

I have noticed prices slowly creeping up here also. Little things like Busches Grillin Beans were reg 1.69 per can and are now 1.99. Our Krogers has been having some great sales. I have started using my coupons again to stock up. Today with coupons I got : Large Country Crock for .99 per tub, Suave Deoderant FREE, Scope 750 ml (lg bottle) for 1.99, Kellogs Wheaties Fuel Cereal 1.49 and Sugar 1.99 for 4# bags. I got 6 of everything to stock up on b/c our limit at our store is 6 like coupons.

For those of you who are stockpiling, the problem is that you can only stockpile so much. The freezers and storage are only so big and the food does go bad.

We have begun to eat/think differently. Even if prices go up, we are still able to eat this way.

We use a lot of the ideas on this site.....although we don't eat beef, so we do buy chicken and fish.

My problem is that I have also heard that utilities are going to be going up significantly.

I am paying a lot of attention to the expiration dates and our storage area. I don't want to get anything that will go bad before we'll use it. I am getting toiletry and laundry items too.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to look at it and put it on favorites.

That's true. But, I did get cokes on a good sale, $2.75 for a 12 pack. That was as close to the good old days of 4 for $10 as I think we'll get. They also had Del-Monte cans for .45 cents. Got a few of those. That was better than Kroger's store brand canned goods.

I heard somewhere that utilities will go up 30% (I haven't confirmed this), just to start, in Jan.. Now that is a scary thought.
