Have you ever stayed at a "pet-friendly" resort?

My wife and I are considering a 3-night escape to the Don CeSar resort in St. Pete. Most of the reviews seem favorable, but I'm a bit nervous about their "pet-friendly" environment.

Please understand that I am not an anti-pet person; in fact, I have a delightfully clueless Golden Retriever that I rather enjoy.

But I NEVER get to take a trip with my wife sans kids. All I need is to drop a bunch of cash on a 3-day beach trip only to have someone's "Fido" wake/keep us up every night. The hotel claims that pets are only allowed in certain rooms, but I know a dog's bark can really carry.

Should I worry or not?

Hi Fargoman

I have stayed at two pet friendly hotels. ONe was the Hard Rock in Orlando and just two weeks ago a Residence Inn in Mpls. I did not see a dog at the HR.

However, we get to our room at the RI and as we open our hotel room door, a dog starts barking in the room next door.

I thought, oh boy, barking all night. Never heard the dog again.

also, I have been on planes on two occasions with dogs nearby and never heard a peep from them.

I wouldn't worry too much. The Doncesar is a huge resort.

herc.

All of the Universal Resorts allow pets. We did not notice them at all except when we checked in. There were two dogs with bandanas and sunglasses on leashes in the Hard Rock lobby. I would guess there won't be too many pets there anyway.

Just wondered if you take a dog with you can you leave them in their own kennel cage inside the hotel room while you are at the parks? We would come home and let him out and such but just wondered if that is okay or if they require you never leave them in the hotel room alone.

I LOVE dogs do not get me wrong. I have had one for the past 20 years (not the same one!). That being said I am a little creeped out by a "pet friendly" environment. What if the dog has fleas and then they fleas stay in the hotel room and a new party checks in? I do not know it just makes me a little leary. Do they require some sort of health statement from the vet before they rent. I know some humans are dirtier than animals but still someone else's pet possibly having slept in my bed before me really gives me the willies.
I had not even considered the barking or nosie aspect.

I highly doubt any family wants to travel in a vehicle with a dog that has fleas. ;) The places we have stayed with our dog do not require anything extra as far as shot records. A couple places did charge extra because supposedly they would then do extra cleaning in the room. The only time ours barked was when the pizza delivery guy knocked on the door and when housekeeping knocked to ask if we wanted extra towels. As for sleeping on the bed we brought her own bed and kept her off the furniture. Not saying everyone does this but I'd guess the "extra" cleaning some places did involved washing the bedspreads.

the extra cleaning should pretty much be changing everything and maybe using some sort of carpet treatment to keep it fresh.
