On our first visit back in 1993--our son was a very tender 5 and our daughter 2. We were staying at CBR and in complete awe at the resort, the parks, pools, etc. . .
Back in the early 90s, it was still okay to swim in the lakes. Our kids were having a grand time playing on the beach and wading around in the lake. This young, obviously in love couple, walked out into the lake and sat down--the lake is shallow. They sat there for the longest time and our son was wandering around the water as we sat watching him--he kept getting closer to the couple and we decided to retrieve him before he got too close. Meanwhile. . .my husband and I determined (as we neared the very much in love couple) that we understood why they were "seated together" for so long in the lake--since this is a G rated site, I will let your adult minds imagine what we gathered.
You should have heard our 5 y/o--as only one that tender age can do--inquiring LOUDLY what are those two doing out there for so long--why is she bouncing on him. . .talk about a moment--we convinced the kids it was time to go to the pool!

Given the large number of turtles in that lake, I can't imagine being in the "open" while submerged there!
Of course, now it's not an issue since swimming in the lakes is strongly discouraged, if not prohibited. Which leads me to the next eye opening moment--not nearly as risque`. . .
That same vacation we were again in the sand building castles, wading around. My husband and I were just chatting about the nice lakes and the beauty of the beaches. We had noticed all of the water birds and turtles, etc. We began discussing how the American alligator was no longer in danger of extinction and, in fact, had recently read an article about the population explosion of the species at all inland lakes in Florida. He or I, not sure I recall now which, said "Gee, I wonder how Disney has managed to keep them out of their lakes?" We both looked wide-eyed at one another and had the lightbulb moment--that's the last day we spent at that lake, or any other in the resort area, in all the years at Disney! It was really a moot point because the next year swimming in the lake was "strongly discouraged" during our stay at GF and by the next year--prohibited at Polynesian. We've since seen the 4 legged bacteria around the resorts!
I won't even start with the attire I've seen on people in the parks!
