Have you ever seen anything like this?

I was at the grocery store today in the produce aisle when I saw something that made my jaw drop open.

A man was looking at some bags of grapes when he opened a bag, took out a handful of grapes, popped them into his mouth and walked off without the bag he took from! :scared1: He then noticed me staring at him and just laughed; I couldn't believe my eyes :sad2:

So, has anyone else ever seen something someone did in the grocery that made you shake your head?

People are nuts :confused3 .... but its just like the parents who let their kids eat them as they walk though the store. You can weigh them on the scale if they are not in the bag.

I see people opening boxes of items or getting fruit and giving it to their kids without ever paying for them. :confused3

I once watched a man walk through a store and make a sandwich. I first saw him when he took a roll from a help your self case and tore it open. Later I saw him with a plastic knife putting mayonaise on the roll which now had meat and cheese on it. As I was checking out I saw him turn down an aisle drinking a bottle of Coke. :confused3

Not that I do, but I'm pretty sure there are supermarkets around here that let you sample produce. Although they don't advertise this, you can even ask the produce person to slice something open and give you a slice if you want to try it.

There are all kinds out there.

I'll drink a soda while walking around the store or standing in line. Once I get to the register, I give the empty bottle to the cashier so that I can pay for the soda.

DH is management with a large supermarket chain. He said you would not believe the stuff people will just blatantly eat. I am not talking samples either. Take a banana, eat the whole thing. An apple, same thing. In the bakery mothers hand their kids cookies, not one, but a few. People grab donuts and bagels. He said the college kids are the worst. (We have several large universities close to DH store. They are very pricy too, these are kids from wealthy families. I guess they are "ENTITLED") He told some college kids that were standing there eating bagels that they were stealing. Their response was to throw a bagel at him and tell him to F off. He walked off to call security and they threw a trash can at him.

When I was very young, I remember going grocery shopping with my grandfather and he would do this. He gave me a couple, too. Not good behavior to teach a child, but somehow I knew it was wrong and wasn't influenced to follow in his footsteps.

Worst thing I ever saw happen at a grocery store wasn't inside but right outside the entrance. There were lots of potted plants all lined up to be sold and from inside at the registers, you could see a lady bent over them working furiously. The front end manager went outside to see if she needed help and discovered she was *unburying* the plants and putting all the dirt into her wagon she had pulled from home! When questioned by the manager as to *why* she was doing this, she replied, "Well, I don't have any good rich soil for my plants at home and can really use this." :bitelip: He tried to explain that she couldn't take the dirt without first buying the plant but quickly realized he was wasting his breath. It was apparent she was very confused and they called the police to see her safely home. I understand this wasn't the first time she'd done this. :sad2:

Personally, I don't think you should eat it or drink it until it's paid for. The grocery store isn't a restaurant.

And I thought the grape incident was bad :teeth:

Although I do not act like this myself, I can imagine what the "produce eater" is thinking:

Hey, free food!

DD likes to eat bananas when she sees them in the grocery store. We get a couple, play for them, then go shopping. If you see us in the Publix on 192, you can ask to see our receipt!!

Reminds me of a Fruitcake Lady question she got once...this guy asked her if it was ok to taste the grapes in the grocery store. And in true Fruitcake Lady fashion, she replied..."Oh my Gawd, you know damn good and well what a grape tastes like... (then she rolls her eyes and says) what some people won't do." Her response is mine as well. Don't taste the grapes.

I've opened a box of crackers or cereal when shopping and my blood sugar crashed. I pay for it, so I don't see the big deal. I figure its better than having a 5 year old screaming from the seat of the cart when mommy passes out in the aisle. I get dirty looks, but I figure there are just people that can't help but to not mind their own business.

Produce though, I wouldn't do that if it was something charged by weight. If it is something charged by the bag, well, see my above paragraph.

See, you are going to pay for it. Most folks do. DH said you know the ones that gobble down 4 or 5 cookies from the bakery (Not the ones in packages)are probably not going to pay. They stand right there and eat stuff and there is nothing to take up front to pay for. They have a Chefs Express. Has large deli sandwiches and such. People will grab a sandwich, eat it and then throw the wrapper in another aisle. For everyone that does pay there is another one that doesn't. There was a write up in our newspaper a few years ago. A reporter was in DH store and witnessed someone just grazing. He asked DH if that happened alot. DH said yes. The reporter wrote up an article stating he witnessed it. The spokesperson from the company told him that employees steal from the company not customers. The company said they had never heard of anyone just eating things and not paying. That caused a big stir and more people started just eating things because they thought it was now ok.

I was standing behind this young kid and he stood in the line eating handfuls of grapes and by the time it was his turn all that was left was the stems. So it total was a few cents. I mean he went to town on these grapes, why even bother going to the checkout? I did make a comment to him that he was stealing and he should have not done that but he just acted like he didn't hear me but I make sure to make a stink about it because after I said something he just stood there laughing because the cashier didn't say or do anything about it.
Our supermarkets are really good about putting out samples of the fruit or you can ask the produce manager for his opinion on the produce. They usually have a good idea if it's sweet or not or the will offer you a sample of it. The bakery also have a kid cookie club where they offer the kids a sugar cookie sample, so it's not any cookie in the bakery but the small bite size sugar one.
