Have you ever made your own colored sand?

If this sounds odd, which is just might - bear with me! :thumbsup2

When we were down for the PS, in talking with Laura about our "theme", she suggested making our own colored sand from New England beaches. I thought it was interesting and didn't really think about it much more.

Today, for some reason it started bouncing around my head. I'm going back to Massachusetts next week, and I hope to spend one day on the Cape. (Cape Cod = beaches!) On my way home back to Maine, I have to go through Portsmouth, New Hampshire (which also = beach and where Rob DF is from).

So my idea is to get Massachusettsian sand for me, and New Hampshire sand for Rob and dye them for the sand ceremony. We already have the sand I bought (and don't like the color of), so the worst I could do is try. Has anyone done this, and what do you think?

PS - here's a website on how to make your own http://www.diylife.com/2007/07/16/make-your-own-colored-sand/

I did (but it was for girlscouts a loooonng time ago) LOL:rotfl2:

I dont remember it being hard, I remember having to stir it a lot because some sections were darker than others. I would start with a small amount, but it's worth a try- hey the sand was free right? :goodvibes

I've never tried this, but it sounds like a very cute idea! Is the sand from the different beaches about the same texture? If they aren't, it might add some more variation in the color and appearance, if that's what you want. Good luck! :thumbsup2

We both grew up doing summers at our respective families lake house and now we live on the ocean so we took sand from each lake house and poured it on top of sand from the ocean. We didn't color the sand at all but it's naturally slightly different tones and textures depending on the source. I tied a ribbon around my vial that matched the bridesmaid dresses and the guys wore beige suits so I tied that color ribbon around his vial. During the ceremony, Rev Tim made reference to each lake and our families loved hearing "their" lake!

I have been looking into making my own sand. A 50lb bag cost like $5... so a lot cheaper than buying 1lb of colored sand for $4

How do you make the different colors? I would love to do this and save a little money!
