All I can say is WOW! I don't blame you for leaving your cart, that service stunk big time! I work in a grocery store (I am the trainer) and we do train on Sundays cause that's usually when the kids can work, BUT we have lots of established cashiers on too so not everyone is new. As for the workers standing around, it is possible they were on break, or not punched in yet, BUT we can and do punch people in early if we need registers open. PLUS, ,managers will open and cash too. I have even seen our service manager (3rd in command for the whole store) and the asst. manager (2nd in command) bagging for us when busy.
And if any person working in the store told you it wasn't in their job description to help you find a product (whether or not it is their department) that would be a conversation note for them.
Yes, we get out of stock on items sometimes (sometimes we can't get them from the supplier) and Mondays are not a good day for store brand bread, no bread deliveries on Monday cause our central bakery is closed on Sunday, but we don't usually run out of that many items.
So, no flames from me either, I actually would have taken my cart up to the front of the store and said, here's my stuff, lousy customer service makes you lose a customer.
