I feel guilty now, but I went to the grocery store this morning.

I spent 20 minutes trying to shop only to find many empty shelves. No hamburger. The meat guy told me to come back 2-3 hours later. Yeah, right.

No rice. No spaghetti sauce. Milk was outdated. On and on.

The gal straightening shelves said it wasn't in her job description to see if there was any milk in the back that was dated correctly. She told me to go stand in line at the service desk to see if someone could get me some milk.

I asked about items that weren't on shelves. I was told that items will be stocked when the stocking person comes in.. probably on Tuesday.

I took what little items I had in my cart. I went to check out. There was only 1 register running, 7 people with carts in line, and they were training a new employee at that new register. One man yelled quite loudly they needed another register open. It was ignored. There were a few cashiers standing over to the side talking amongst each other.

After standing in line for 5 minutes with the line not moving and 2 people in front of me leaving I just left my cart sitting right there.

Now I feel guilty because I could have and should have backtracked and neatly returned all the items in my cart before exiting the store. Maybe I should have done that instead of wasting 5 minutes just standing there in line not moving.

Now that girl who couldn't get me milk because it wasn't in her job description is going to have to return all my items, plus 2 other people in line in front of me who left their carts.

I drove a mile down the road to another market. I got everything I needed, plus there were 5 registers open and 3 self checkouts. I got what I wanted, checked out quickly and went home.

I feel guilty though.

Have you ever left a cart of items and left a store?

Yes, I have. If the lines are too long, I don't wait in them. DH did it all the time, and I picked up the habit.

We have one local chain that never has a line, so I know that it is possible for stores to work it out so that we don't have to stand there forever waiting to pay. :)

Only when my child had a melt-down and we had to get out.........and I got flamed for it on a thread here, so get ready...............

Sounds like a very frustrating experience.............

OP, what a horror story. I don't think I'd ever shop there again, EVER!

I'll get my flame suit out of the closet.

Don't feel guilty! That girl who wouldn't even offer to help with the milk was rude. I worked in retail and if I ever told a customer that something wasn't in my job description I know my managers would not have been happy. If a customer asks for help, you help. If you can't personally help then you need to find someone who can.

Most stores sales start on Sunday so they need to be staffed appropriately. I also don't think training a new associate on one of the store's busiest days is a good idea. Actually it's a downright stupid idea. I understand if that's the only time they can work but that's when you make sure there are other registers open so no one has to wait in line abnormally long.

Good for you for leaving and finding a store that could meet your needs.

I wouldn't shop there again but I wouldn't leave a full cart. It was my decision to shop there and my decision to leave so I'd return the items. Just my two cents.

No flames from me! I have done it once or twice in the past when I have encountered some of the issues that you did. When the level of customer service (rude staff, lack of staff, items not available/out of date) is so poor, I don't feel guilty at all in not spending some of my hard earned money with them!

Know it won't make a difference but wish you had posted when and where this took place. Also, was it a large chain or smaller chain. Did you bother to complain. My most recent worst experiences deal with going into super walmart on sunday morning and regularly finding the store poorly stocked. This seems to only happen at our closest store. The one a few miles away in a better neighborhood seems to be taken care of much better.

Often got discouraged going into BJ's wholesale store and hearing various excuses from people in the meat department about not receiving deliveries. I also got to experience their not being able to stock the dairy on friday afternoons as they were leaving the store. If I could have I would have just walked out and left he cart. When my membership ran out this past wekk I didn't renew.

I wouldn't have left it in line, but I would have gone up to the service desk, tell a manager why I was leaving my cart: couldn't get most of my items, a rude/unhelpful rep and the long slow line and cashiers chatting (and if they were on a break then they need to be in the back) topped it off.. and then leave.

I was going to go to the service desk to ask about the milk, but the service desk woman was helping to train the new girl at the one register that was open.

There were 2 people in line at the service desk waiting for her to come back and help them.

I guess I could have called and asked for the manager once I got home, but I didn't. I'm not even sure he was there. This store only has one manager.

I agree.
I just wanted to mention that this store's weekly ads run from Thursday to Wednesday.
Now another store in town also runs from Thursday to Wednesday.

i walked out of super-walmart once when a guy on one corner of the store sent me to the opposite corner to locate an item and when i got there and couldn't find it an employee there told me to go clear back to where i started. i was very frustrated and gave up...
the 2nd time i walked out of super wal-mart was after 40 minutes in the checkout line. they have at least 50 registers and only about 5 were open and the lines were about 15 deep!

I did once because my wallet wasn't in my purse (ds had taken it out) and I had no way to pay, but they were aware of what was happening and told me to just leave my cart.

I can't imagine doing it because the wait was too long. I guess I'd just wait (unless I was ill or something) and then decide to never go back to that store (no flames directed toward you, though).

I won't flame you! The one and only time I ever left a full cart was for the same reason. My son was about two years old at the time and, completely out of the blue, he started crying and screaming. It happened over twenty years ago, and to this day, I'll never forget it. It was so unlike him! He was always a very complacent little guy. He was sitting in the seat of the cart and I didn't have a clue what set him off. He wouldn't stop and I was so flustered I just wanted to get him out of the store.

OP- I can understand why you did what you did. How frustrating!

I think if I had perishables, I would have put those back. Depending on the level of frustration I felt at the time, I might leave the rest there. If I was not too annoyed, I'd probably put the other things back.

We have had to do it twice but for very different reasons. My DH is on the fire department and we were just about done shopping and he got a call just as we were getting into line with our full cart. We were mortified but the store (we shop there every other week and know a few employees who are also married to members of the FD) was kind enough to grab our cart and put it into the cold storage for us and that way my DH was able to come back after the call to get it!! Luckily for us it is a 24hr store so it was possible. Thank goodness for that!!! I guess we are lucky that it has only happened the 2 times and not more!!

Customer service makes clients want to return, or choose one store over another.

Three carts left in line should have been enough of a message. The manager helping a trainee should have noticed the line, asked the trainee to do the bagging and rushed to get the customers through checkout and on their way. If the other employees did not offer to help then they do not care about their work. That should be brought to the attention of someone who cares. If that is not the manager on duty then call the owner or the corporate office.

Of course only if you wish to keep shopping there. And do not be bashful to ask for compensation for your wasted time. They can easily give a 10% discount coupon for an order. Then ring up your biggest order ever.

We got a two free passes to the game place (can not remember the name) at downtown disney when we complained that our allstar room was repeatedly not cleaned.

it would be silly to feel guilty!.. and this is coming from someone who worked at a small supermarket during half of high school..lol. You do them a favor by shopping there your a paying customer its not like your taking the items for free, the least they could do is be a little bit more helpful or least be apologetic for the inconvenience..right? dont feel bad :) but i would feel a little funny going back but why would u want to? lol
