Have You Ever Had Tide Detergent Ruin Your Clothing?

dd once cleaned the bathtub for us as a surprise,, she used tilex,, rinsed the rag and tossed it into the hamper,,, luckily it landed on some of my work clothes,, tilex, any mildew remover, and sevreal other cleaning suplies have varying forms of bleaches in them, and if rags/cleaning products get into the wash,, it can cause fade spots.

I use All Free. I get impatient sometimes and dump the stuff right on the clothes. I've never had spots of any kind. Oh, I use dryer sheets too.

Well, she doesn't use any acne medication or any products that would cause such a thing. I am starting to wonder though if there was something in her room that might have caused this while the clothes were in the hamper.

Does she use anything like Clearasil face soap? I know my dh used something for awhile and his shirts would come out blotchy on the neck hole or the chest. It was only his stuff and he wondered why I was doing that to his laundry!!

He switched to something else and it's pretty much stopped happening.

Sorry I can't help with exact product names (what he USED TO use, what he uses NOW) But think about everything that comes in contact with clothes (deodorant, or soaps or whatever) They might be reacting with the Tide Free.

I just performed a little test because as I went back in to look at my khaki skirt, I noticed that it, too, had splatter marks all over it. Although they were not white, they were a lighter tan. So my khaki skirt is ruined.

Anyway, I threw the H&M dress back in the washer and recreated by steps by throwing the detergent on top of the dress. No splatter marks.

My guess is that when my pile of fine washables was laying on the laundry room floor *somebody* splashed something on them.

I think it is the Tide. I've switched between Tide Free, Tide with Bleach Alternative and Tide with Febreeze. They have all caused me the same problem at one time or another. I have tiny white spots on some clothing and my sage green towels have pinkish spots where it started to fade. I put the detergent in then let the water cover it. If I have really good clothes in there I let the detergent agitate then add the clothes and finish filling the washer. I'm almost out of detergent and I'm thinking about switching.

I have always used Tide (regualr) and it seems that there are some colors that this happens to with me. All of my blue and green towels have had s."bleach" spots on them. Also light green shirts seem to get "eaten" too. I only use dryer sheets.

I've used Cheer with Colorguard for years. It is the ONLY detergent I will use. Every time I try something else, my clothes fade immediately in that wash.

I did have one Victoria Secret T-shirt I've had for years fade when it accidently got put in the dryer. I hang them to dry so they don't shrink. Another T that was exactly like it, in the same load, but did get hung up, didn't fade. I didn't know the dryer could fade clothing. A pair of panties that was the same color was in the dryer and didn't fade, so I know it wasn't because something with bleach got into the dryer.

Yes. The heat of the dryer can fade your clothes. So it's better to use a lower setting.

I have had funky fade spots on my shirts before. I thought it was my detergent as well.

I'm not sure who pointed it out to me, but someone suggested that it was actually the fabric softener (liquid) that we used that was causing the stains/fades.

Turns out they were right. After using only the sheets for two or three years now, I have never had that problem since. It was very irratic too when it happened, so I had no idea what caused it at first since we have the areas to pour all the detergents and the like in.

So if you use fabric softener, it could be that. Apparently build up in washers cause that to happen and very irradically as well. I lost many shirts to that stuff (it was Downy too, so not cheapy stuff either)

I'd forgotten about this. I haven't used liquid fabric softener in years. But I remember that we had this same problem when using the liquid instead of dryer sheets.

Well, no one confessed to spilling bleach.

DD doesn't use any "face" products as she has no skin problems. Just Dove soap and Cetaphil moisturizer.

We also do not use fabric softener. Plus these clothes never made it to the dryer as they are sort of like "hand" washables.

The only commonality they had was that they were all laying in a pile on the laundry room floor. But you should see these splatter marks--they are quite large. About the size of a nickel and several of them. The splatter marks on my skirt encompass an area as large as, say, a teacup saucer.

Call the 1-800 number on the bottle and see what Tide says and if there is anything that they will do for you.

Christine, cold you have had anyting in our hands when you put the lothes into the washer? I have ruined a couple of my clothing items with dishwasher detergent. Even something like Soft Scrub or toothpaste will take the color out of clothes. (I think Froggy sort of suggested this)

Nope, not in the manner that they are ruined. And it was 2 separate loads done on two separate days. These are fairly large splotches.

But I have ruined a shirt here and there using my Clorox Clean-Up on the counters. That showed up immediately and wasn't as bleached out as what is going on here.

I've noticed the greasy spots too. Someone suggested to me a while ago that it may be caused by liquid fabric softner. Do you use the softner?

No softener here. Ever.

I also have noticed the "greasy" spots in some things. I have often heard that this is due to uneven fading of the garmant due to poor quality (the rest of the garmant fades while some spots don't). My son has a "greasy" spot on his new Old Navy shirt. That happened, though, when I was using the regular tide.

I've never used Tide, been told it's to harsh for cloths, machine and septic systems.

I use cheer, a small amount and a 1/2 cup of baking soda. On DH work clothing I use Simply Green.

I have also had a few problems is the past with this happening, don't think it's the detergent. I live in a town that our water is supplied by wells. I sometimes turn on the faucet and can smell bleach especially after heavy rains. I think it got something to do with the reaction of the chemicals they use in the water, the detergent and certain clothing material.

There are also certain drinks that contain products that if spilled on clothing will bleach out the color.

I have had a few shirts in the past with the same issue. I never considered that it may be the Tide. I've used regular Tide for 20 years. I've noticed it more recently. I seldom use bleach.

Not liquid. I use dryer sheets cut in half.

It's happened on cheap and higher quality clothes here, and it's mostly my DH's clothing. I thought he was spilling something at lunch but I started checking his clothes and they went in without the spots and came out with them. I don't dry our nice clothes at all, so it's not the dryer.

I use both Tide Free and Tide Coldwater (which one I use depends on what I'm washing). I've never had any problems with the Tide Free, but I did do a load with Tide Coldwater that left blue stains on a couple of my shirts. All I did was wash them again (I used Tide Free the second time around since the detergent itself is clear instead of blue like Tide Coldwater) and they were fine. Be sure to try re-washing your clothes, maybe that will work.

I've been using Tide Free for a few years now and never had any problem whatsoever. I even put the detergent directly on the clothes for stain treating using the "Tide Kick" that was out a few years back. You fill it with detergent and spread it on the stain with a roller ball, kind of like in roll on deoderant. Then you just throw the whole thing in the washer after you're done stain treating. That way, you're only using one load worth of detergent total for stain treating and washing, so not wasting extra soap on stains.
