if for some reason...you can't use them within your year?

Just another "I'm new to all this" question folks...sorry

thanks,

Renting is normally not a big issue, as long as you give yourself enough time to do it. Points must be used or banked before the end of the Use Year. So, if you have a February Use Year, I wouldn't recommend waiting until December to try and dispose of your points.

But don't forget you can always bank one year into the future. If you purchase 150 and cannot use them in a given year, you can bank them and have 300 the next year for an extra long stay or room upgrade.

We're new to this, also, and we were trying to rent out our points. It was quite a learning experience. I don't know if it was just our inexperience, but every single person we were contacted by kept us "on the line" while they made arrangements with someone else. It was very frustrating for us, and seemed quite rude. We finally decided that this was way too much hassle and quit. Maybe we'll try again another year, but for now it's just not worth it.

I would say, if you want to give it a try, I have heard from other people that they never have any trouble. But do not take a chance on losing your points if the deal doesn't go through. In that case, I'd say it would be better to bank.

geez, my extra points never even made it to the rent/trade board! :teeth:
i had posted on this forum asking if anyone had a rental contract to look at, & rec'd a PM from another DVCer looking for a pt transfer.

agreed on price, wrote up a "transfer contract", used escrow.com (she paid their fee) ~ so quick & easy!
very nice person too ~ we may even meet up at WDW later this year (just a note ~ i priced the 8/04 BWV/BCW pts at a (IMHO)very fair $10pp knowing a transfer is less headache. had i rented them out, i prob would have asked more ~ renting to a non-DVCer involves much more work).

all in all, an excellent "first time renting" experience!
:earsboy:

Extra points?!?!?!? What are those? We only have 380, so we try to stay in a banked points mode. That way we always have enough to use. In 8 years, I have never had any need to rent any out. I intend to use them for myself!:teeth:

The one and only time I have rented points out was when I saw a post on the Rent/Trade Board from someone looking for points. I contacted them and they accepted my offer immediately and sent a deposit to hold the reservation. Most of the balance has been paid and the ressie is not for several months off.

I have also rented once. I saw someone listing the exact number of points I needed and I sent them the money as soon as the confirmation with my name was received.

So, I think it is fairly feasy to determine "who is just looking" and who is really ready to do business. If you ask for a $100.00 non-refundable deposit to book the reservation, you weed out a lot of "lookers". Just don't wait until your points are about to expire before you offer them up. Allow enough time for a transaction to be finalized.

i have rented points before we bought, sent the money right away and received the conf. letters, then we bought dvc and a few months ago i rented points from three very nice dvc members agin i sent the money right away within 3 days i had all my points transferred in to my account and made my christmas ressies for my whole family for a family reunoin. now i had 9 points left from my 2003 use year needs to be used by aug of this year and points from 2005 that i had to cancel one night because db will be leaving 1 day early at christmas, no loss it actually worked out we will be staying an extra day, well i was short a few points to make that ressies, then i came across a post for point transfer, ok i thought this will work i make the 2 studio ressies with my 9 points from 2003 and borrow my now 2004 points because i canceled the studio for db using the 2005 points is which now become 2004 points. well the renter agree even sign a contract upon her request and told me a few times that indeed her points are transferable, because once i make the ressies if i have to cancel, those 2004 points become 2003 and have to be use by aug., well the renter knew my risk and guess what happened,
the renter forgot to tell me that she didnt close on her ssr contract, and wont be closing on it until june, i offered her the rooms for cash since i will now have to rent points for my one night in jan. the renter said no, im sure you will be able to rent them out, ok they are for july forth, but the 2 studios are only for 1 night, now i am in a bind, not only do i have these points to use before aug, i cant bank, i cant transfer the points, and no offers on the 2 studios plus i now have to rent points myself.
urgh.

dont get your points messed up like i did, some people just dont get how value these points are until they lose them.

even a contract doesnt make the transaction safe unless you add into it stiffer terms.

or deal with experince dvc members, there are a lot out there that like to help.

my experince renting posts great, renting points out :earseek:  :(
