Have you ever had a demonstration done at the dept. store makeup counter?

I'm ready for some good makeup and I'd like to find a salesperson that will show me what's best for me and how to put it all together. But I don't want someone pushy and I don't want to buy a lot of stuff that I don't need and will never use.

I've avoided those ladies for years! How do I find the "right" one? Do you have a product line that you can't live without? I could start there and hopefully if I sound like I know what I'm talking about they won't put the hard sell on me (I'm such a sucker for a salespitch!). Do they use clean brushes for each new person?

Anyone else think those ladies are scary? :maleficen

DH's aunt - who has always looked 20 years younger than she really is - gave me some Lancome samples that she didn't need. Of course I used them! ;) I have dry skin and I found they have one product that really works for me. After avoiding the ladies at the counter for years, I finally gave in and they explained what else I needed to do, and demonstrated it on me. It was wonderful! Then I had the make up done - even tho I never wear make up. I found some nice things that wouldn't kill me to use, and even tho they did try pushing some things, I just told them I wanted to try a few things and see how it went.

Good luck!

I have had them done 2x - once before my engagement pictures, and once the day of my wedding. One was with Estee Lauder and one with Clinique. Neither time was the woman pushy at all - they said they do them free for brides (I got my bridal party free as well since i registered there) but charge a $30 minimum purchase for others (that was Estee Lauder, I am not sure about minimums for others). I don't think $30 is much for a full makeover myself.

I ended up buying 1 item each time because I really liked it. I just called the counters and make the appt - you could call and ask what their policy is on demo's and make an appt if it sounds good.

I love the M.A.C. counter makeovers! You can go as dramatic or as subtle as you want, and the girls (or guys in some stores) do a great job of explaining all the products, and how to use them. They're also brutally honest about what colors will and won't work for you. I've found them to not be very pushy.

Oh, to answer some of your questions. Both of the ladies that did mine were in their early 20's, so def not scary ;) And they use Qtips to apply things, or the tips of their fingers.

Does anyone have a link to the website that compares each makeup (I know I got it from the DIS, it's a woman that sells her own products but compares all the others - I can't remember her name, Paula something)? I used to have it bookmarked but it's gone. Thanks.

It's Paula Begoun She has Paula's Choice and Paula's Select. It's skin care and make up. I love her no nonsense approach to it all. What I do is take her list of the best things and find one that fits me out of that.
Some things I still buy from the drug store, some I haven't been able to find what I like other than what she sells.

Most of her comparisons are in her books. She created the website for people like me that said that since she knew what worked and what didn't, that she needed to come up with stuff of her own, and we'd buy it. Along with a few thousands of others, we convinced her. :)

I love Bobbi Brown. They have never made me look "made up"-always natural, and I don't feel pushed to buy anything-but I can never resist buying the lip color! MAC is a good makeup also, I just feel they do me up too much--they are good for "going out" makeup. Bobbi Brown is classy, everyday looks.

My suggestion is to look at the people selling the goop and if you like their style, it's possibly right for you.

I'd also ask when one of their national makeup artists is coming and schedule an appointment, I've found they are much better than most of the local "sales girls".

I had it done my first time after my 3rd son when I needed a self esteem pick up. I chose the Lancome Counter and was very impressed with the results. I ended up buying some products, but not everything she used. I started small, eye liner, eye shadow and powder. I have had it once since as I was replacing some products anyway. The second one was way over the top. I told her subtle, but I looked like a hooker when she was done. She tried every product known to mankind I swear. The end result. I replace the products that I have been using and bought nothing that she suggested. The Lancome products hold up well and the eye shadow doesn't crease as it will with drug store cosmetics. It doesn't hurt to give it a try, but only buy what you will use.

I go to the Clinique counter whenever I need a pick me up. They don't charge anything and they right it all down so you can come back later to get the products you like

I love the various make up counters at Nordstroms in Providence Place Mall - they're all nice and not pushy.

I actually use AVON and I LOVE it !!!!! :goodvibes

When I got married I went to Macy's and had my makeup done, came home crying, I looked like a hooker. I washed my face, and started all over with my AVON !!

I have done it once...it wat at a Clinique. The girl/woman (very, very young!) did not really seem to know what she was doing. My foundation was like 2 tones too dark and my eyes ended up looking like clown's eyes. I was not impressed!

That was a few years ago and have not had enough courage to try again. I may try Lancome next.
