Have you ever consigned clothing?

There's a nice ladies consignment boutique in my town. The have nice things but it's not necessarily super-upscale. I spent most of today pulling out clothes and washing and hanging and preparing to take them in tomorrow.

Have you ever sold clothes on consignment before? This store is a 50/50 split, does that sound right?

I'm just hoping to get some extra $$$ in the Mickey Mouse fund. I'm taking about 40 items so maybe I could get a hundred bucks or so if some of the stuff sells.

The consignment stores I've been to are very particular about the clothes they will take. Tehy tend to want items that were new within the last year - so about 1 season old. And they are particular about the seasons. Right now, they probably do nto want winter stuff - unless they know it might sell.


I've not taken stuff to a consignment store since my DD was little - but for the clothes she had - it made sense- since they were outgrown before they were worn out.

I have sold my children's clothes at consignment stores. I had the choice of getting a credit at the store which would be a 50/50 split or I could get cash which was a 60/40 split. I have been pleased with the money I have received.

ouac is a rip!!! you get pennys on the dollar even for high end clothes.

I agree that OUAC is pretty tight on what they give. See if you have a non chain children's consignment store first. I will take things to OUAC now and then because I still rather drop off things, pick up what they don't want and pick up a check later then try to sell on my own.
I'm more likely to give away everything then resell so any little bit is money in my pocket!

I did better taking the tax deduction for donated clothing than I did on consignment - but there is something to be said for cash in hand! And it doesn't help unless you itemize deductions.

Once Upon A Child.....they are super picky and for the life of me I cannot tell what they will take and what they don't. It kinda depends on who is doing the "appraisal" and their mood. I have had a manager tell me Sperrys were great and yet the girl behind the counter told me there was slight wear. Compared to what they had on their shelves I would have thought they would take most stuff. SO.....it is a hit or miss there. Just be prepared and don't let your feelings get hurt.
I prefer Craigslist.

Grown Up Clothing.....we have a few consignment shops plus a shop that gives casu up front. They all only take items that are in fashion right now....according to them. I had several pair of Docker khakis pleated front and they all refused to take them because men's pleated front is not in style. Also I had excellent condition Levi jeans....again, not the right style. Mine were regular 509....not the skinny/straight leg.
I prefer Craigslist also.

So...like many have said they are probably taking spring/summer items in now, unless it is a super seller like NorthFace or sports stuff.

I brought 42 items into the consignment store. They took about 20 and asked me to bring a few back next month. I also have more spring and summer stuff to bring in late next month.

I found a few more winter things that I will wait until October to bring in. I know, it's crazy to hold on to stuff like that for so long, but I have some space in my basement and I need to pay for the Disney fix LOL

My contract is through March 4th so I'll post then what I managed to make!

I gave up doing this a long time ago. Between the limited amount of stuff they would accept from me and then the teeny tiny return many weeks later .... .... it just wasn't worth it. I discovered eBay & Craigs list and made much more $$ that way.

My SIL introduced me to a local consignment store last summer. I brought in ONE armload of clothing (10-12 items total), plus 3 pairs of shoes (still in boxes) and some jewelry. They took all but 3 items of clothing and most of the jewelry. When we returned 90 days later, we looked around the store (SIL LOVES to shop for clothing; me, not so much) and I couldn't find any of my items. At the counter, I think my eyes bugged out of my head when they told me I'd earned $91! I was thrilled with that!

I used to take my children's clothing to consignments all the time because they were in great condition up to a certain age. I kept them stain free and they usually took most of them and all but a few (usually the ones I thought would go first ) would sell. It was a great way to get a little extra money, and also keep me motivated to keep the closets cleaned out
