Have you ever called 911

Lots of times for my parents and brother thanks to their health problems. They actually know our family now.

Since I moved in with DH, I had to call once last summer when my neighbors decided to shoot off fireworks from the very dry field behind our house. The field isn't used, it's just wild grass. Do you see where this is going? When the firework fell over and started the fire we watched for a minute. When the fire headed towards our house we called 911. The neighbors got it out before the fire truck got there, thAnk goodness.

I've called 911 several times. A few years ago there were about 5 or 6 foreclosed homes here, and teenagers would have parties in them. Once, there were gunshots at one of them. Fortunately, all those homes have been purchased and rehabbed and now have families living in them.

Yes, I had to a few times when my ex husband who is bi polar was off his medicine and was too hyper for me to handle. I didn't know what to expect from him when he was like that. Several times I admit I was afraid and had to call.

was in a car accident with my ex boyfriend that resulted in the deployment of the airbag (and a lovely burn under both my eyes and some hearing damage).
was in another car accident in high school with my mom when we were rear ended.
ex boyfriend had an asthma attack with severe chest pains.
witnessed an accident and called to report it as a medical first responder on the scene and provided basic treatment until paramedics arrived.

I think those are all the times I can think of.

Neighbor's crackhead boyfriend threatened me with a gun when I told them to stop using my garbage cans (we pay for garbage pick up here and there's a limit of 2 cans per customer). Neighbor said "ok, sorry, I didn't know I had to pay for that." Crackhead boyfriend said "we'll just take one of your cans and if you don't like it I'll kill you." (Direct Quote) Crackhead boyfriend had a bunch of outstanding warrants, so the police thanked me for calling 911 :)

I have called for minor issues. Then there was when my mom fell. She had cancer and lived with us for about 6 months. One day I had brought DD into the house. I left her strapped in her car seat and turned around to go help mom out of the car. She had decided to try nd do it herself. She fell backwards. Our driveway has a slight incline and she couldn't get up even with my help. Fire Dept came and helped her up then checked her out. She passed away a few months later.

The oddest time I called was when we were driving on the highway on a Sunday morning. I looked in the next lane and saw a brown Ferrari. We were in the minivan so I was looking down. The driver was drinking a Henekin. I could see him holding it in his lap then taking swigs from it. When I called the state police, I explained the situation and where we were on the highway. The dispatcher asked if I got the license plate number. I assured the dispatcher it was the only brown Ferrari on the road near us. We saw the trooper moving through traffic behind us then pulling the car over.

Awesome! :lmao:

Three times that I can think of.

1. Two cars crashed in front of our home. One ended up drivers door against a light pole, so she couldn't open the door. She jumps out the window (by this time I'm on my front porch to see if I can help anyone), sees me, yells, "Call 911" and takes off running down the street! The woman in the other car had a bloody face where she hit the steering wheel, but she was "ok." About 30 minutes later after the cops came and helped the woman and asked me what I saw, an older man comes walking down the street with the woman who took off. We watched as the police did a sobriety test on her, handcuffed her and put her in the back of the police car.

2. It was winter and we were headed back from my parents' house (about an hour and a half away). We were driving on back country roads and came around a curb to see two lights, one on top of the other with about four feet of blackness in between. We couldn't figure out what it was - maybe a sign saying the roads were closed due to ice and snow? When we got closer, we saw it was a jeep on it's side! The driver was kicking out the windshield to get out.

3. We were driving to my parents house (a different time) and saw a car pulled over on the side of the road and a man was punching a woman!

I've only called 911 once....I was driving down a dark country road about 1:00 am, and there was some drunk guy driving his ECV (yep, those kind they have at Disney!) in the middle of the road. I don't know if he was coming home from the VFW or what, but the guy was going to end up getting hit by a car. I called 911 and the response was "Oh, him again!"

Once when my mom and I were out for a walk and saw an outside house painter fall off his ladder from quite high up and bang into several things on the way down.

The only other time was when I was in High School, had recently broken up with an abusive boyfriend. He came to my house, and attacked my Dad and brother when they tried to protect me. Called 911, he raced away down the street, when the police pulled him over he assaulted them. The beauty part of all this is that nothing ever ended up happening to him. :( Not a good time in my life.

I was a 911 dispatcher as well as firefighter and I had a lady call one day because her newspaper had not been Delivered yet!! I sent an officer to this very elderly ladies house to check on her and her children decided she shouldn't live alone anymore. I also had a woman die on the line with me, she had a heart attack. She was a nice lady I had known her some out side of work but that was not an easy call, but she had been ill for awhile and was in her early 90's so at least she was at peace. And I too have had to call 911 for my DD , hit her head and passed out , she was 1 1/2 or so. She was fine thank god !

Just be aware that depending on your location and what type of phone you're using (land line vs cell- and there are even different categories of cell phones) and the different agency protocols in your area are, you may get transferred. For example, I only dispatch police (not fire or EMS) but all the phone calls come through my center first. If you need medical or EMS and you reach me, you will get transferred to the folks that can help you with those items.

When our garage/ shop was on fire (separate from the house). It was the middle of the night and DH went out to start the hose while I called. We live in the country and the call routed to the county north of us so our address confused the lady at first. So I've told the girls if they call they might need to specify our county.

I've called twice..

First time, an older guy collapsed on the lawn in front of my house. Turns out he had smoked crack and ended up having heart problems.

Second time I had to call for myself. I had female issues ;) and ended up hemorraging. Not to be gross but I was running like a faucet. I was rushed to the hospital and was about 2 minutes away from an operation and blood transfusions. Luckily, everything has resolved itself.

More times than I care to count. Working at a rest. near a highway, being a nurse, having a brother who thought he was MR. cute stuff and pulled a knife on me.

For me the most embarrassing was working in an assisted living place and having to call EMS to pronounce a lady dead. I'm was like this is so and so at Oakcrest and I need someone to come pronounce a death, they came 4 fire engines, 3 county sheriffs, and I have no idea what else, all with sirens blaring. I was shook up but more upset with nosy coworkers in other buildings coming over.

I am an emergency dispatcher. Just know that even tho the caller may think the questions are ridiculous, we may have our reasons and the caller may never know them.

I am a dispatcher as well. If we dont ask "ridiculous" questions we may not have a clear understanding of the incident and will result in us looking for a new job.

Non emergency, small town so everything goes to one place.

Yep...sometimes the NON emergency # tells you to call 911! I remember years ago, I borrowed my brother's car and back then cars a lot of times had keys that both opened the doors & started the car. I locked the door not realizing his car wasn't like that!! So, I called the regular # to tell them I locked myself out & they TOLD me to call 911...I even questioned them going "umm..it's not really an emergency" but that is what they told me to do! Then the worst part was I couldn't tell them the license plate of the car or anything!! Maybe it was a good thing we are smaller and they believed me. LOL! This was WAY before cell phones so I couldn't even call my brother for the police to verify. I was calling the police on the pay phone as it was.

I've had to call 911 a few times in my life....although more often than not I'm driving a kid to the ER...kind of scary when you know the ER routine by heart.

I just thought of something to add though....if you ever call 911 by mistake -- stay ON the line to tell them "oops...hit the wrong button". I live way under a rock and/or our police are very good when they need to be in hiding mode. My neighbor's husband accidentally hit the emergency button on their phone, hung up, and called who he meant to. They called back but he ignored the call waiting. Apparently they had full police surrounding their house including hiding in our bushes (we were even home & I had NO CLUE any of this happened -- she was telling me about it the next day!)....they made the DH come out and when then my friend had to come out too to prove that she was OK. It makes perfect sense because someone could have been trying to call for help being hurt by someone else and got caught per se. They told them if that ever happens again, stay ON the line and just let them know you did an oops vs. hanging up quickly.

We would not call 911 here for a fire or if someone was sick/hurt- you call the fire/rescue number and it cuts out that 911 midle man and they get here much faster. 911 calls here are for police matters, not fire or ambulance.
I've called 911 a few times, kids walking down the block breaking car windows with beer bottles and I dont recall what else but I know there was a least one other.

Our 911 center dispatches it all. We dispatch all the fire depts, EMS and Sheriff Dept in the county.

Do you get both landline and cell 911 calls?

In California landline 911 calls all go to the Law enforcement dispatch center, with fire and medical aid calls transfered as needed.

Cellular 911 calls all go to the California Highway patrol dispatch center, where they are transfered to local police, and fire as needed.
