I was just reading the topic over on the Theme Parks board about the member whose child was bitten by a venomous snake at CBR. They called 911 and everything turned out okay but it got me to thinking... in that situation, I probably wouldn't even have known to call 911! I was talking to a friend about this and she told me she has had to call 911 multiple times. Yikes! I would be absolutely awful in a situation where emergency services needed to be called and I had to be the one to do it. I would be a nervous wreck!

Has anyone here ever had to call 911 (for themselves or anyone else)?

I had to call for myself once when I was pregnant with DD12. I had placenta previa and the placenta ruptured. I was told if I had any bleeding to call the office right away, which I did. The Dr told me to call 911 right away and to get to the hospital (ther was a lot of bleeding) I'm like you I think...I wasn't sure what to do even though I was bleeding really badly :confused3

Yes--it was ingrained to me in school. I have used it on myself even when I was nearly passed out and couldn't stand up (I was the only adult home with 3 small children).

The other times it was for traffic accidents I witnessed and on one occasion it was on a parent who had their children in an unsafe situation in his minivan.

I called 911 when I dropped my infant dd on her head. :scared1: I tripped going up the stairs and took one hand away to steady myself and she toppled out of my hands. She ended up with a skull fracture and concussion-she was only 3 months old. Talk about guilt!

I had to call one time - DD 9 months at the time fell out of her crib, but didn't cry...i was convinced she must be seriously hurt to not even cry...new mother what can I say.

I felt better once the paramedics came and looked her over, we went to the hospital for a cat scan just in case and were sent home.

I actually did at POFQ! My son (then 11 months old) toddled into the door jam :scared1: He had a huge purple bump on his head within seconds and we called 911 because he was gasping to breathe as he screamed and cried. Disney employees and security showed up in less than 2 minutes and the ambulance took about 5 minutes.

He was OK, the paramedics were great - checked him over, gave me things to watch for, told me to let him sleep and give him pain meds, etc....

They actually were just as worried about me, lol, I was so worried about my little guy.

Disney security was great :thumbsup2 They gave my kids stickers and distracted them so I could talk to the paramedics. The hotel employees were also very kind, even calling twice later in the week to check on us and sending balloons for the little guy :)

Nope, never had to call for a real "emergency". I had to call one time when my wallet was stolen. It was stolen from my desk drawer and the entire floor had been hit and they had the guy leaving the building so I don't see how it was an emergency. I called the main number for Boston Police to ask to speak to an officer report the theft and get a report filed for my insurance and they told me to call 911. I didn't see the emergency but apparently they did.

My DS9 also called when he was a toddler (under two). Apparently he thought my taking a shower and not talking to him was a good excuse to climb onto the table and grab the kitchen phone and try to call grandma. Imagine my surprise when I hear a pounding on the door and "open up this is the police". There I am dripping, wearing only a towel and the police are at my door - the best part - my neighbor was the cop at the door :rolleyes1

ETA - I've also called *SP twice - the cell phone equivalent of 911 in MA - that goes to the state police so they can tranfer you to the correct 911 locale for traffic emergencies. Once for a traffic accident where a car hit a motorcyclist (very scary) and another time when a guy was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1 right in front of Gillette Stadium. :scared1: At the time the road was not divided.

For medical issues we don't call 911 here- there is a direct line to the fire dept that you call for an ambulance (in turn they dispatch the ambulance and notify the police...you can call 911 but you get quicker action by the direct number). I have called 911 a bunch of times, kids loitering in front of the house, strange kid going in neighbors house (house was abandoned), and stuff like that.

Yes I have called 911. Once in our car, when we were driving next to a VERY DRUNK driver. - he crashed shortly after our phone call to 911 but the police were on the scene quickly.

and one time when I was living in a sketchy neighborhood with my friend. We were only "house" in the area - it was industrial, hospitals and stores. (it was free rent though so couldn't beat it for us) BUT one night we hear a girl screaming "He's going to kill me HELP!" over and over. We hear gun shots.
Called 911!!

Oh thought of another car time driving back from down south along I 95 we see a minvan full of people fly through the air over a divider and land on the hood with another car crashing into it.

oops and once more- when we were house hunting and we past a house on fire!

And once in college when I live off campus. It was late at night- we had a creepy back door(we lived on the top floor and this staircase was dark and narrow just leading down to the garbage) We NEVER went down there.

Well someone was banging on the door trying to push it in! We are screaming HELLO. No answer.
Called 911- When the police came they found some idiot we knew from school drunk as a skunk. But when they came in to tell us, I was holding a butter knife in my hand(my weapon) and the cops burst out laughing asking if I was going to spread him to death! (yeah very funny)

So YES I call 911 in an emergency! That's what it's there for. But I didn't realize I have called so often. I lead an exciting life I guess!

called when a lady passed out in a restaurant, when I saw a maid throw her cig butt under the bushes-which caught on fire-which spread to the house-all in about three minutes, and a few highway accidents.

two drunk drivers as well.

Yes, when my boss passed out and started seizing at work. Unfortunately I was 16 and scared out of my wits and I couldn't speak. :guilty:

Yep my moms had 3 seizures and I was the one who called 911 for all 3 And the ONLY one who managed to stay calm after the first one (when my dsis's were out in the yard and saw it). Then again it helped that when the medics arived, they were personal freinds of mine. I ended up writing a letter to there boss about the way they delt with my dsis's. They insited that I pick them up so they could hug my mom after she came around on the stecher.

My brother has seizures, so I've had to call a few times growing up. My g'mother has a seizure disorder as well, but I don't think I've ever had to call for her. I've called when I've seen an accident happen on the highway. I think the most terrifying call was when there was guy in our apartment at 11pm. Of course they didn't do much good either. He jumped out the bedroom window and apparently left in a car. They never did anything after that.

When you're at Disney, always call from a house phone, that way you reach Reedy Creek (Disney's onsite ambulance), if you call 911 from a cell, you'll reach Orange County and they have to then relay it to RC because it would take too long for them to get on property.
There's phones every where at Disney and at the theme parks, so if you let a CM know, they can have security come to block the scene off as well.

Yes, when my parents' barn burned down. I had so much adrenaline going through me that my heels were bouncing up and down off the floor as I was standing in the kitchen waiting to be transferred to the FD and listening to the hold music (yes, they had hold music. I was an absolute basket case, but I remember the hold music!)

I never called it on purpose but at one time out weather hotline in Cleveland was 931-1212 and I apparently missed the 3. I was expecting weather and heard "911 Emergency". I explained what happened and I guess it happened a lot from what the lady told me.

Whomever thought of that number needs a firm talking too though.

Yes, not too long after my DH and I moved into our house. It was the Friday after Thanksgiving, and a young girl (maybe 10 or 11) showed up on our front porch in sweats and "sock feet." She said her grandfather was "angry" at her for listening to the "wrong music," and she was scared. She asked us to call the police for her.

Well, we knew our neighbors across the street were, shall we say, odd. The man, in his 50s at the time, had tried to "recruit" us into a militia-type organization through leaving literature in our mail box, etc. So we told the youngster to come in and called 911 for her. While we were waiting for the sheriff to arrive, we tried to gently ask her about her grandfather. She told us he had guns in the house and he frightened her :scared1:. When the sheriff arrived, she asked me if I would walk out to the sheriff's car with her. I did, with both my DH and I keeping an eye on the neighbor's door.

We never heard what happened that particular day -- the sheriff took over in questioning the child and dismissed me -- but last year, the neighbor in question was arrested for child molestation. It turns out, in addition to the girl he was literally caught in the act of molesting, he had also abused at least one of his grandchildren. I felt so awful after hearing that, wishing I could have done more. I have no idea if the young girl who showed up on our porch that Thanksgiving weekend was one of his victims -- she never said anything to us in the brief time she was with us -- but the thought that something might have been done then to prevent the guy from hurting kids haunts me still. :guilty:
