Have you ever been offended by advertising?

The most recent clearasil ad really rubs me the wrong way. Its the one with the two girls in a science lab asking about the latest in acne fighting technology, and when the "scientist" tells them that one of the problems those battling acne face is Hyper pigmentation, one of the girls says, "hyper what?" and he repeats himself, like she's stupid. Then, after he's done speaking the girls say, "Keep up the good work, Mr. Science." and walk away.

So have you ever been offended by advertising? What ad was it, an why did it offend you?

Offended? Yeah, borderline. There's a political commercial on locally on right now that keeps commenting on the "hardworking families" and it completely rubs me the wrong way. Single people work hard too.

I think 'offended' might be too strong of a work, but it definitely gets under my skin.

I tend to get more annoyed that offended though.

I think its interesting how something that offends one person isn't a blip on the radar to another, I wouldn't have ever picked up on the hardworking FAMILIES. I would have probably heard it as more of hardworking people, but now that you say it that way, the phrase will probably annoy me too.

I don't remember the specific ads, but it seemed like there were quite a few misogynistic ones during the Super Bowl this year. It started to annoy me because, hello, I like football, too! And I'm *gasp* female.

But I was more offended that so few of them were funny.

There have been some Carl’s commercials that have not agreed with me. I can’t remember the exact commercial but it had something to do with girls not being able to eat Carl’s because it was messy and “too much to handle” or something like that.

Usually, I just laugh or shake my head at the creators' stupidity. I mean I can’t even remember what the commercial was, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Overall, though, I don’t like a lot of Carl’s commercials because many of them seem more like they are trying to sell a good-looking girl than a hamburger.
Anyone remember the car-washing commercial? Did they even show a hamburger?

I don't remember what was being advertised, but there was a commercial where at least one woman (maybe another) was making seductive facial expressions and noises towards a male baby. Seems "amusing"...but if that was a man doing that to a girl, there would have been a huge uproar.

What gets me are those Kleenex ads saying you should "try out a new mom." This guy goes from mom to mom, leaving each one if he doesn't like her cooking or the type of tissues she gives him. You can't just get a new mom! How rude!

there was one for Quizno's that was similar to those already mentioned: the too much to handle thing.I only saw it late night, so at least there is that.

I always hated the "O" commercials for Overstock.com, offended may be a little strong though.

then there's the obvious: all the personal, adult couple type stuff that airs in the afternoon. I wouldn't mind it so much if it were just on late night.....

I just googled, and yep, Hardee's and Carl's are the same. I learn something new everyday!

The pro HFCS commercials make me want to throw things at the TV. So condescending. And so WRONG. What happens in the lab between types of sugars has nothing to do with actual humans.

If I felt like torturing my child, I would give him some and videotape his reaction, then send it to them. Better yet, I would have them here and give him some, then leave them alone. But I don't want to torture DS, and he would refuse it anyway; he was 3 when I finally figured it out, he's almost 6 now, and he still remembers how out of control, scary, and violent he would get when he would have HFCS (or corn syrup or even corn syrup solids like are found in Dole Whips).

In the lab, sugar is (might be) sugar, but in humans it's vastly different. DH has a reaction as well (the opposite of DS's, DH passes out), and we can monitor it on his blood sugar monitor...cane sugar does one thing...HFCS does far far more.

I hate the stinking commercials. PLUS they always are eating something with red dye in it, which causes a similar reaction in many many people! As we "purified" DS's diet, we saw the food dye reactions even as we culled the corn syrup based things out, and therefore we don't do dyes, especially the red ones, either. Just nasty stuff.

Hate those ads.

LOL, I don't usually pay attention to commercials enough to be offended by them, but that one got me too. Probably because I know how badly my kids would like to do that!

Some of the things that make me upset are kind of contradictory. For example, I get upset when I see people get upset over things that were supposed to be done as humorous and everyone gets there knickers in a knot over it. At the same time, and in relation to the quote above, how come no one is registering major amounts of indignation when so many commercial, TV shows and the like, make men look like totally incompetent fools that have to be constantly kept on the track by obviously superior women.

I find that to be, not so much offensive, as demoralizing and indicative of the attitudes of many. There are many stupid men out there, no argument, but they don't have a monopoly in the inactive brain cell department. However, in so many things men are depicted as weak, clueless and downright unable to tie their own shoes without a woman to help. In so many sitcoms, the kids are shown to be way wiser then the fathers and they usually are in the same camp as the mother. Dad's an idiot...Mom is the only one that knows anything.

Our humor has gotten to the point that the only thing that we find amusing anymore is when someone else is made to look like a fool. Pretty sad really!

but i have to agree with bumbershoot when my son eats sugar he goes crazy.. and also red die affects him... acually when he eats red stuff that is why we miss the green cutsup.. it make me mad when they say sugar doesnt affect behaivor i would like them to come to my house..

the commerical i hate is for some kind of paper towel when the kid makes the mess and the mom joins in...

Love your period "always" -- yea right!

And at the very top of my list are commercials for viagra and cealis- why why why are we subjected to those? My daughter asked questions about that WAY before I was ready to answer them about why you need to go to the hospital if something happens for 4 hours and what does that something mean!!

In so many sitcoms, the kids are shown to be way wiser then the fathers and they usually are in the same camp as the mother. Dad's an idiot...Mom is the only one that knows anything.

That seems to be the model for every sitcom. The man is some sort of idiot or degenerate and the woman always has keep him in line. Part of that I think is because the male actor is usually a comedian and the female plays more of the straight man role.

Its where the mom is at the sink and her ds comes in and shakes up a bottle of soda and sprays her, and she smiles and says something like "thats not how its done" and sprays him with the sink sprayer. And then happily cleans up the mess with her Bounty paper towels.
I don't know any mother who would be laughing after her child sprayed soda all over her and her kitchen and the happily clean it up

My DH watches the Outdoor Channel and there are lot of commercials during Fishing shows that Subtley "put down" women. Now they are funny too.

There's one for a fishing rod that you simply CAN NOT break-the woman is telling her DH that he is NOT going fishing this weekend-she tries to break it in half-no luck-she then puts it in the Trash compacter. He takes it out unharmed

My issue is not with a particular commercial but a category of commercials. I think my complaint is similar, not the exact same but similar, to what Goofyernmost is saying. There is a LOT of sexism in commercials. Not only do they make men look stupid and incapable but if you pay attention household products are clearly not marketed to all adults but women only. In my household (and a lot of others) housework is a shared responsibility. Yet, cleaning products and the such are marketed only to wives. These commercials only show the Moms owning these decisions and it is Mom's job to keep the house in order. When were these commercials made? The '50s? I guess the similarity I see, where I sympathize with Goofyernmost's point, is that these ads play up stereotypes and they are not good stereotypes and don't help society move forward. They promote disrespect and I find their assumptions offensive.
