Have you ever been injured at a park?

A few years ago we were staying at Ft Wilderness and our then 11 year old son was playing on one of the swing sets in one of the loops and hurt himself. The slide has a cover at the top and as he started to go down the slide an exposed bolt caught him in the head. As you can imagine with a head wound there was a lot of blood. We rushed him to one of the comfort stations to clean him up and a CM was there cleaning and immediately called a supervisor. Rita showed up in no time and suggested she call an ambulance just to be safe. The ambulance arrived and they suggested they take him to the hospital and get some xrays and stiches. Only 2 could go in the ambulance so Rita offered to take the rest of us to the hospital if we wanted to go. We passed so just Mom went with DS to the hospital. When they were finished at the hospital they called Rita and she sent someone to pick them up and bring them back to the campsite. Nothing too serious, about 4 stitches I think. Disney took care of all the bills.
Of course he had to go for a follow-up a couple of weeks later back at home. We sent that bill to Disney and they took care of it as well.
While it was a very unfortunate accident the professionalism, care, respect, and attitude of every CM we encountered was exemplary and we were very impressed.

Two things stand out about that trip. One, it was DS's first trip to the World, first ambulance ride, and first stitches. Second, when we first went to the comfort station to get him cleaned up and he saw himself in the mirror with blood all over the place he started freaking out. But Mom was there ready with comforting words when she told him "Don't worry honey, it's worse than it looks". Obviously she was a little freaked out too.

ROFL!!!:p :p

The reason I would like an incident report is this:

1) I work in Risk Management.

2) It is usually normal procedure (for us anyway) to provide an incident/injury report to parents.

Please don't misunderstand.....it was a total accident. There is no liability on Disney's part and I certainly am not looking for them to pay any bills. That would be ridiculous unless they were at fault and they were NOT. I would just like to know that they cared enough to send me a report. That's all.

My son was 7 at the time---it was our first trip to the world. We had just come out of Star Tours shop and were lookig for my daughters stroller---husband and daughter were still in the shop. My son and I were stand there --not moving--when a guy in an ECV started going backwards---he was not looking and ran over my sons foot. He was wearing his water sandal--so there was nothing to buffer the impact. His ankle and foot started swelling right then. Went to a CM and got a wheelchair and then made our way to fisrt aide. Let me say it was not a pleasant experience--they really did nothing---thought they could have done more---just looked at it and said it was fine--they did put ice on it. The CM that took us to the first aide station said that htis happens all the time---that the EVC cars are a hazard. He is now 9 and we have been to the world three times and if he sees one coming he goes to the other side of the walkway. Even if he knows it is stopped he still sill go out of his way not to be around it.

Years ago we were in Epcot and my (now ex) husband was pushing me in my wheelchair. Suddenly, I heard a sizzling sound, then felt excruciating pain and yelped.

Some guy had stopped walking dead in his tracks, with his cigarette held low and out to the side, and it burned right into my arm! Talk about painful!

It started to swell, and it hurt like MAD. My husband said something like "You should watch where you put that thing!" and the man just glared at us, and didn't even apologize. He just walked away still glaring at me!

We were on our way to a PS at R&C and I asked the server for ice. He could tell I was in pain and felt bad, he suggested I really should go to first aid after we ate, and I did, the pain was so bad.

We get to First aid and I explain that I was burned by a cigarette to the nurse and she says "Well, that's why you shouldn't smoke!" I said "I don't, it was a stranger's!!!"

She didn't say much, offered me an icepack and a bandage which helped sheild it from the sun, which really made it hurt more.

It bothered me for weeks after, and needless to say I make sure DH steers clear of smokers when we're in the parks now!

It was not an injury but 2 years ago we woke up early for our Cindy breakfast and as I am trying to get my DD at that time 7 to get moving she was complaining that her eyes were crusty..... You guessed it PINK EYE (ARRRRRRRRR) Cancelled the breakfast and called the front desk at AKL because I had no clue what to do considering we did not have a vehicle and it was just me there with 2 kids...... The staff was AWESOME!!!!! They arranged for a van to pick us up and take us to a clinic which confirmed my diagnosis along with an ear infection. After a heafty 200.00 + bill for the office visit and 2 medications because they did not accept our insurance we were taken back to the hotel..... We were also given a new reservation for a Cindy breakfast. The one prescription had to be refrigarated so the first day I just kept it in the ice bucket but after mousekeeping noticed it in there we came back to the room and was surprised with a refrigarator at NO CHARGE!!!!!! The front desk did check on us a day or two later........
As far as missing any park time (HA) I know I am probably going to get roasted for this but I threw a pair of sunglasses on her monitored her VERY closely so that she did not touch her face and we washed our hands more times than I can count.

No roast here.. sounds like nothing but good medicine...:D :D

Well, not in a park....but he passed out on a bus on New Years Eve going from MGM to The Contemporary Resort. The bus was very, very hot and the windows could not be opened and the A/C was not working. In addition the parking lot exit had been messed up due to people moving the traffic pylons which made it a 45 minute trip exiting the parking lot alone.

Disney called Paramedics and a Representative came and took questions...all in all they were extremely responsible and decent. He spent 17 hours in hospital and after every test imaginable was released with a diagnosis of heat prostration.I will only rememeber them for how well they handled us and the situation.

I think Disney should call after any incident/injury. It is good customer service and proper risk management. Disney needs to know everything, from what exactly caused the fall to how the CMs handled it to how First Aid and the emergency room handled it. Disney needs to know where they need improvement and where they are doing well.

As for the incident report, the injured person may need it for the insurance company. It can be difficult to get payment for out of network services. A copy of the incident report can be very helpful. Also there may be info in the report that could be helpful to any doctors doing followup. (Maybe not in this case, but I can imagine injuries in which the docs may need extra info that the injured party can't provide like what kind of material a child fell on or was the bolt rusty, etc.)

My youngest fell while walking at EPCOT, with a little help from his big brother, and we were helped by a CM to go to the first aid station. They CM's at the first aid station were more than wonderful for a scraped knee. he was treated with bactine and a bandage, and LOTS of Diseny stickers that had Nurse Minnie on them that said 'I visited first aid today". Later on that day other CM's asked him if he was feeling better, when they saw his sticker on his shirt. :D

Hey, how come I didn't get those stickers when the same thing happened to me in Epcot and I had to go to first aid? Those "huge" bumps in the sidewalk jumped up and made me trip (not like I'm a klutz or anything!) No one gave this middle-aged lady stickers. Sounds like age discrimination to me!

My husband was getting on the Triceratops spin last May and must have twisted wrong. As he was getting in he grabbed his back and fell to the ground yelling in pain. I commend the CM running the ride, he had his hand to the phone to call for an ambulance before my husband hit the ground. Everyone at AK was wonderful. My husband was lying on the ground moaning in pain and a bunch of managers were running around clearing the path for the ambulance (small golf cart type) to come in the back way. They then took him out the back and transferred him to a regular ambulance. The AK Managers than called for a van to take my kids (who were pretty shook up) and I back to our resort. They also asked us if we needed passes for that day. I thought this was very generous since it was not their fault. We didn't need them anyway since we had AP's. The CM's at AK did a wonderful job.

Cinder1,

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad somebody understands why I would like to have a phone call and an incident report. I was starting to feel like I was getting BLASTED! By the way, our insurance company IS an HMO and we definitely were out of our network.

No problem. My kids have been injured at places (no fault of the place) and I've always been called. I've explained what happened and they've used that info to their betterment. With kids, especially, you can't always see what might injure them or what they might get into. Disney really needs to know too how the parts of the system that they don't control are working. We will be there next month and I can't wait!!

My dd at the time 5, fell outside of Prme Time Cafe in MGM. She climbed up on the retaining wall and slipped. DH was supposed to be watching her..

It was dark and she was bleeding profusely from a cut on her cheek. We were drenched with blood by the time we walked back into Primetime. 3 new Disney sweatshirts were shoved into our hands and we were told we must change immediately. A van took us to Celebration hospital and she needed stitches. They had no plastic surgeon on call so we had to settle for liquid stitches. They said there would be no scars. They were wrong. She has an inch and a half scar under her left eye. I took her to a plastic surgeon here and they said they could fix it a little better than it was, but no guarantees. They also said it may shrink as she gets older, which it has.

She's beautiful scar or no scar and everyone is used to it. I tell her it's the Disney souvenir she'll have forever! (along with the sweatshirts they gave us! ;))

No one ever contacted us and I never contacted them. I'm sure if we wanted to we could have sued and got something from Disney, but that's just not us. It was OUR fault we weren't watching our daughter as she climbed up on that wall. If it was something that was Disneys fault, then it would be a different story.
