The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

I don't know if I have -- if I did know, it wouldn't have been taping me without my knowledge. :teeth:

This doesn't surprise me at all.

On past wiretapping and Patriot Act threads, the majority of Dis-ers didn't seem too concerned because they weren't being personally affected. Well.... guess what? ;)

It doesn't really matter to me that I don't have anything to hide. This is all too big-brother, and I still don't like it.

This was my FIRST thought, too! :)

If they're on the line, I wish they'd break in and give my friends who have marriage problems some advice...I never know WHAT to say! :)

I say nothing in phone calls that's not common knowledge and I don't have anything to hide. Now if they started keeping track of what I say on the DIS, I might have a problem. Might make me a bit snarky! :smooth: ;)

My last call was basically spent listening to my husband try to cajole his NJ housemates cat to come inside for over five minutes. I finally had enough and hung up. If they really want to listen to that, be my guest. At least somebody does... :rotfl2:

And they wonder why most Gov workers are a sleep on the job ,Listening to my phone calls would put them right out.

You know they have cameras everywhere in the city now my job tracks us with GPS and has our laptops upload a report every monday. What are you going to do NOT BREAK ANY LAWS.

I don't think it's right by any means but it's been going on for a long time and we have lost a grasp on our government.

It's no longer WE THE PEOPLE it's YOU PEOPLE.

no one is taping or listening in to your phone calls....sheesh
if you read the article it says that the NSA ( according to an un-named, unidentifiable, anonymous etc ) source is collecting information on phone call patterns within the US. Most likely to determine what a regular phone usage might look like and help identify an abnormal usage. Useful? Practical? Maybe not, but it sounds like the same thing that ATT does to track phone usage.
No one anywhere ( except here ) believes that someone is listening in to your call.

I know nobody's listening to my calls; it's just that the government doesn't need to know who I'm calling. Most other people also have nothing to hide from the government and are law-abiding citizens, but that doesn't mean the government can monitor us every second.

Actually, you don't know that nobody is listening to your calls. DH and I have had huge problems with Verizon and their inability to provide a clear line. We've been sharing lines with our neighbors for years - they hear us, we hear them. It happened every time it snowed or rained. It went on for months at a time, then it was fixed for a few weeks, then it started up again, until we finally reported them to the state utilities commission. Cordless phones and cell phones are easily picked up on things like baby monitors, not to mention scanners and other phones. Nothing is private.

If Verizon can keep a list of my phone calls, what do I care if they give it to the government? If Verizon already has it, giving it to the government isn't a big deal. As long as they're not selling it to people for tele-marketing purposes, they can know that I'm a boring person who only calls my DH and my doctors. :)

This was passed on by the Supreme court in the late 90's and bagan in 1999, BTW.

And? Still doesn't mean I have to like it. Just because I'm not doing anything wrong doesn't mean I won't mind if any government, liberal or conservative, foreign or domestic, gets a list of all my phone numbers called or Google searches made.

"Customers' names, street addresses and other personal information are not being handed over as part of NSA's domestic program, the sources said. "

from the article....^

the program is designed to collect info on calling patterns.period.

Indeed. But the government has asked Google for data on searches from their website. Sure, it's for fighting pornography and such (a separate issue, obviously). And I'm all for getting the sick porno people, but it's too extreme for me. Where do we draw the line? One person minds having that info handed to the Feds, but another might not. So who gets to decide?

I guess it's the same way they decide everything else. I don't really enjoy paying all these taxes, but I don't have a say. Some people would gladly pay more. You win some and you lose some. Being part of a society involves compromise, I guess.

I figure if the NSA and other agencies (those that cannot be named) can look at my neighborhood, pinpoint our house and see whether or not my roof is in place then I have NO doubts that big brother has been with us for a long, long time.

If anyone wants to hear or monitor my phone calls I don't have a problem with it as long as it helps keep another 9/11 from happening.

I am way more concerned about other things.

I really think sometimes people have a little too much trust and blind faith in the government. Governments don't always do the right thing, and they certainly don't always act with the best interests of the public in mind.

Just because it's America doesn't mean that every single little thing our gov't does is wonderful and innocent. Governments can be dangerous when they start being sneaky and gaining too much power/control over their people.

I find it sad that so many are complacent about these kinds of things, but, oh well.
