Have the room security checks gotten worst lately, or is the Riviera house keeping over the top?

I think this is where the arguments are being conflated. People seem to think that Disney can neither enter the room, nor inspect luggage (which I've actually never heard of before this incident), when in fact they absolutely CAN enter the room for what is generally considered routine servicing (which is likely why Disney "empties the trash" during the security check), and absolutely CANNOT search your belongings, whether in your luggage or transferred into a drawer ostensibly owned by Disney. They can enter the room for non-routine reasons, only with probably cause (smell of smoke, sounds of breaking objects, reports of prohibited items like hot plates, etc.), but still cannot perform a search of the guest's belongings.
Exactly - And I am all for room checks since they protect our timeshare property - but to extend that to going through our bags while we are not there, without our consent, is unnecessary and pointless.

Disney’s behavior in this regard is so low rent. We have stayed at multiple high end hotels over the last few months and =nothing like this. People with money don’t tolerate this. It’s only middle class people who get walked all over by companies like Disney. Just one more way for Disney to let you know what they think of you.

Obviously the CM going through drawers was in the wrong and not following policy. This is not, and never has been the policy or a routine practice.

The kindest interpretation of that CM's actions is that he/she was over zealous or did not understand the policy.. There have been reports of thefts at the resorts. One has to wonder if that was what was really going on here. I am glad it was reported

Meh, I don't buy into this argument. Disney is making a blanket policy to check rooms so that they are covered should a catastrophic event like the one in Las Vegas happens on their property. People spending $4,000 a night at the Grand Floridian for a club-level suite are subjected to the same search policy as the one we are over in the DVC buildings. Whether or not it is enforced depends on who you get knocking on your doors. I've had house keeping knock and when I answer, they said they just need to tap their badge on my keypad to "show their boss that they are doing their job". Encounters vary trip by trip. The middle class is not getting "walked on" by Disney...the middle class is voluntarily abiding by the rules/policies. Don't like? Don't stay.

Right! If their main objective is to search for child abduction/trafficking, I don't think they will find them in a drawer!

thank_the_phoenicians88, the true champion of the Hoi Polloi!

Haha, no. My only point is that I've seen a lot of posts on the forum that suggest Disney is against the middle class and I just don't think that is true. Disney is a premium product with a price tag that matches.

I did not say Disney is against the middle class.

The points I made are as follows:

1. The middle class get treated differently than the upper class.

2. This kind of intrusive behavior does not happen at very expensive hotels.
DVC may be an expensive product for you, but it is a middle class product. I am not saying some wealthy people do not use it, but it is a middle class product. There is nothing wrong with a middle class product, but very expensive hotels are a lot nicer than any DVC hotel. And… they treat their guests a lot differently.

Was at Riviera a few weeks ago and always opt out of housekeeping as I don't need it. They insisted on coming into the room every afternoon. Slightly annoyed as it was always during my afternoon nap/recharge.

We make a point of taking the Room Occupied sign off when we leave the room. If housekeeping is in doing their trash and check procedure they leave the room ajar so it's easy to see they're in there. Once we found the room on the opener and it was because housekeeping had been interrupted so she was returning. I have no problem with them doing the check and taking the trash. We make good use of the safe.

Side note: has anyone noticed that the trash receptacles are minimal? It seems that we get only one receptacle in the bath area and under the sink. I swear there use to be two in the bath area - one in the toilet/shower room and one by the sink. I thought there was a trash receptacle in the area containing the beds/couch.

The housekeeper should note that you are in there at that time and reschedule the visits earlier or later. It doesn't take a lot of effort and other venues do this.

This is a failure of IT - they should know who the 5 plus year guests are that have completed 10 or so stays with no incident or damage and leave them alone.

Marriott does this well- I have heard them doing security checks room to room last year so I offered to let them into mine and they said no need you have a history with us.
Yes, yes, yes. I totally agree.

ETA: In the 20+ years I've been staying on WDW property, I think they might've noticed by now if I'm there for some nefarious reason.

And yet in the post-pandemic-closure era, I've had to regularly basically beg for housekeeping at both AKL and POFQ--and taken out the trash myself since housekeeping ignored my room--and yes, I was out of the room for hours every day and there was no Room Occupied sign on the door when I wasn't there--for days at a time.

When you say door opener, are you talking about the safety / security latch….

Hotel staff should not be using that to hold the door open as it damages the door frame.

They also should not be leave a door open and walking away from the room.

As far as the trash, we had a full size kitchen trash barrel and recycle barrel (same size) in the cabinet and smaller barrel in each bathroom and on in each bedroom…. Is that normal?

Yes, the security latch. DH wasn't thrilled that the room door was left ajar but all the important stuff was in the safe unless people wanted my Disney leggings.

I swear there use to be a trash barrel by the TV area and one in the toilet room as well as the bathroom sink area. Now I just take the one out of the toilet area and place it by the sink. I don't remember having to do that before.

But that family from New Jersey who bought into DVC 10 years ago and has been visiting every year since might suddenly decide to mix things up a bit and perpetrate a Las Vegas style massacre, or get into the human trafficking business. I can only infer that Disney executives do not read this forum, because if they did surely they would put a stop to this nonsense.

And if they chose to do so the house keepers would not know even with security checks….

Never once did they look into my hard sided luggage …. Just the underwear draw

The policy for Disney is such that they are allowed to enter rooms for security checks.

They are supposed to knock and if no answer, are allowed to enter the room.

Beyond that, the other things seem to be outside the stated policy.

I think the thread has run it’s course
