Have the room security checks gotten worst lately, or is the Riviera house keeping over the top?

Many people share that opinion but the policy is what it is. IMO, better to make it easy for staff to do their jobs rather than put up barriers which will only cause me greater frustration.
So again every member of management that I spoke with said there was absolutely no reason for the staff to have been doing what they were doing and corrected the problem when it was brought to managements attention….

if there is a policy to rummage into people belongings I am not ok with it….. and I would hope most people would not be ok with such a policy….

Again, I only had this issue at one semi new, newer resort…..

not sure why

I wish I felt more relaxed about this situation, but I was staying by myself for a couple of days and I was quite concerned that a room check person would show up while I was in the bathroom or just out of the shower, etc.

Fortunately, that didn't happen, but I've definitely had room checks while I was napping and it's terrifically annoying.

I know it's Disney's policy and it's part of the room contract, but sheesh, I've been staying there for 20+ years. If they really think I'm doing something illegal while I'm there--and good luck proving it--then stop renting me rooms. And I'll stop giving them thousands of dollars.

I agree with you 100%.

I may have missed it but what did management do to "correct" the problem?

recently returned from my first Riviera stay. Loved almost everything about the resort and im really hard to please.

My only complaint house keeping wanted to get in my room more than I would care to enjoy.

If you were busy, like going to the bath room, taking a shower, sleeping they would pound on the door until you answered the door. If you didn’t answer they would have someone blow up your phone until you answered it.

They would claim it was a maintenance check, but when I reported a light is a bad bulb I was told I would have to report that to house keeping…… wait aren’t you house keeping….

I lost it on someone in guest service when they decided the needed to go through my 13 year olds underwear….

haven’t had this issue at any other resort. Including the three day prior to this stay at bay lake….

Technically, this was still during the chapek rein so I’m happy to blame him, but really feel like it was an over zealous security manager…… I mean house keeping manager….

Has anyone run into this at other resorts ….
You’re going to blame Chapek for someone supposedly going through your 13 year old underwear?

surely you are not serious.

This is a failure of IT - they should know who the 5 plus year guests are that have completed 10 or so stays with no incident or damage and leave them alone.

Marriott does this well- I have heard them doing security checks room to room last year so I offered to let them into mine and they said no need you have a history with us.

Maybe we got disconnected along the way but the basic intention to enter each room on a daily basis is unchanged. It sounds like the CMs did not interact with you very well and management will hopefully correct. They should be striving to make the room checks as painless as possible for guests.

But displaying the "room occupied" sign is not a way of completely opting out of the daily room check. If you have not experienced knocks or phone calls at other resorts, it's because they are performing the tasks when you are out of the room.

My point is that we, as guests, can do our part to minimize the impact by removing the sign when leaving the room. That gives housekeeping / security a clear indicator that it's a good time to take care of their work.

Completely agree.

My point, that I think you are missing is

WE were in the room, with the “room Occipied’ sign no the door….. when these event were occurring.

I was in the shower when house keeping pounded on the door relentlessly,
‘My step son had just walked out of the bathroom to find the maid digging in his underwear draw….

those were two separate days….

I understand you point, if the room is empty let them in….. I agree

but what about when the room is not empty…..

That is when these event occurred…..

and it only occurred at one resort out of the 4 I have visited this year…..

‘’and it was the only detraction from my new purchase…..

This is when you immediately start recording with your camera.

PSA: Train yourself now on how to start recording quickly so you can do so if the circumstance arises. I don't know how on an iphone, but on most android phones you can double-tap the power button to bring up the camera and then HOLD your finger on the "take a picture" button to start recording video (this is helpful if you don't have time to switch modes from "camera" to "video.")

I can start recording video in about 3 seconds this way. Your mileage may vary. Test it out now so you'll be prepared when the need arises!

If CMs have not checked rooms by a certain point in the day, yes they will begin knocking on doors even with the sign out. And if they don't get a response, they will enter the room.

I don't agree with the "digging thru underwear drawer" the way you describe it and that's the part that calls for management intervention.

But again, presence of the "room occupied" sign is not an opt-out. And if the sign is left out all day, there's no way for CMs to determine an appropriate time to perform their work. They'll usually wait until later in the day, hoping they spot the absent sign when the guest is out. But if it's never removed, there is certainly a chance of catching you sleeping or showering when they knock.

This is true of every Disney resort, DVC or no. And it's been the policy since late 2017. Cash guests were mostly unaware of the change because they usually receive daily housekeeping. DVC tried to soften the blow by making daily trash removal part of members' benefits.

With respect you're missing the point of the signs. They don't mean what you want it to mean no matter how hard you want it to mean that. They can and will do security checks with you in the room.

Most guests at Disney spend enough time out of their room that it lessens the actual interactions compared to maybe some other locations.

If you leave your clothes in your bag - just refuse if they ask to search. Even a LEO can’t search without cause.
Except that you are on Disney property agreeing with their terms and conditions. You aren't in your own home.
In my experiences, the key to minimizing disturbances from hotel staff is to make sure the "room occupied" sign is removed when not in the room.
A very good practice. Also, when you are in your room use the deadbolt/chain lock.

Seriously! That also happened to us- we had to call last summer to request more toilet paper for our 2 BD. Housekeeping brought 1 roll!
Weird, they left a cart between are room and the neighbors. Any paper products you needed just help yourself.

and to someone else point, at some point in the day they need to check the room….. if that point is 8;30 in the morning, Disney will go out of business at together ….

I don’t know why they went through drawers…but this is not a normal thing that happens at RIV. I stay a lot and in the warmer weather, we too are at the pool and in and out during the afternoon hours, and not once have I ever had an issue like this occur…even during the times were were there and they came to take trash.

I am glad you bought it to the attention of the management because going through personal things should not happen like that.

“the Fourth Amendment protects people, not places.” US Supreme Court Katz v. United States, 389 U.S. 347, 351 (1967)

You have more rights in your timeshare room than you do in public or in the parks. Your 4th Amendment rights do not require you to own the land or dwelling you are in. In a hotel or timeshare, you have a reasonable expectation of privacy. As long as you are not past the checkout time your right to privacy in a rented room has already been established in multiple 4th Amendment cases.

You also edited my post to leave out where I said "The room search is covered in the room contract"
Please show me where it says you suspend all of your 4th amendment rights upon check-in in the Disney contract..
Hotel staff has the right to enter the room if it is in the course of their duties even without the DVC contract - but no right to search purses/luggage or your person. Hotel staff can not even let a LEO in the room without a warrant, they can face civil liability for doing so, never mind conduct a search of your bags.

I think this is where the arguments are being conflated. People seem to think that Disney can neither enter the room, nor inspect luggage (which I've actually never heard of before this incident), when in fact they absolutely CAN enter the room for what is generally considered routine servicing (which is likely why Disney "empties the trash" during the security check), and absolutely CANNOT search your belongings, whether in your luggage or transferred into a drawer ostensibly owned by Disney. They can enter the room for non-routine reasons, only with probable cause (smell of smoke, sounds of breaking objects, reports of prohibited items like hot plates, etc.), but still cannot perform a search of the guest's belongings.
