Hello everyone. My husband and I are looking into DVC. Polly direct doesnt really suit our needs since we really need a 1bd.
I have thought about resale but would like to know the perks we would be missing out on. We do plan on purchasing APs.
If we purchase resale would we be able to still add dining plan? Buy DVC merchandise? Thanks all

Yes you can get the dining plan. The perks you won't get i think are the discounts on AP and TiW or other dining discounts, member only events. I don't think there would be restrictions on buying DVC mercy, but i don't think you would be missing out on much there. Most of the resort gift shops sell some sort of resort items. I believe you still get access to TOWL. If you search though the threads there might be a more detailed list. It seems with the new restrictions people are going the route of buying a resale contract and then once you are a member you can buy a direct 25 point contract. The savings buying resale really outweighs the cost of buying direct for the perks.

If you need 1BRs, buying a full contract direct will never be the best idea.

Figure out what resort you want. Buy resale. Add a 25-point direct contract with the same UY via Disney for that resort. You will save $$$$ but get the AP discount and other "perks." Still won't be able to use points for Disney Collection or cruises, but that's a "loss" that isn't a loss.

Thanks soooo much everyone. Im sure happy I found this board. I just couldnt wrap my head around less points more money direct vs resale more points same amount of money

IMO the best option for most people in 2016 is buying resale at the cheapest place that meets one's minimum needs and doing a 25 point add on. That way you currently get ALL of the benefits that are true benefits. Just take the points needed into account as part of the decision making one needs to go through. You're looking at needing somewhere in the 200-250 range for a week in a 1 BR assuming a large % of trips won't be in the Xmas and Easter times that are premier and if they are, DVC may not make sense at all. But buying 150 plus 25 and giving it a try is not a bad plan. If you can find a fully loaded 150-170 point contract, it will play an extra 25 or so points per year for around 4-5 years anyway. That and a 25 point add on might be sufficient for many people's needs for a week in a 1 BR.

And that's a good thing. It forces you to judge what you are and are not getting retail vs resale. The ONLY times retails makes sense are when you can't get a given option resale and/or when the dollar difference is small (small contracts, newest resorts).

Agree with Dean, just to put some math here. Assume you'd like to buy 175 points at BWV, where there is a good mix of location to value (cost in points per night).

1st, don't let 2042 end dates discourage you from purchasing at one of those locations. 26 yrs is plenty of time to maximize value and "buy where you want to stay" is more valuable than how you'll continue being a DVC member 2.5 decades from now. My rec on location for routine booking of 1brs is BWV or OKW because they have better points per night pricing than other resirts.

So. Let's assume you can get a BWV resale for $95/point, which is doable.

Direct at $140.

Option 1 - buy direct ($140 x 175) = $24,500.

Option 2 - buy resale ($95 x 175) = $16,625

Option 3 - buy 150 points resale ($95 x 150) and then add 25 points direct ($140 x 25) = $17,750.

So, you can get back most of perks (still could not use the 150 resale points for things like cruises and concierge collections - but those are historically horrible uses of points).

You can buy AP passes. DVC merch. Attend special events. Etc.

For $1125 more than just buying all points resale.

And for $6,750 cheaper than direct.
