I purchased the DCL insurance for my Dec 1 Magic San Juan PR to Miami cruise BUT I did not get the Disney air. I live in FL, so before the hurricanes, it has been cheap to fly to PR. Disney air would have been over 300./person (for a 120. flight, now more). So the question/problem is this: Undecided at this point when to TRY to get to San Juan, the day before the cruise (the original plan) or the morning of. Hardly any hotels available and even if they take a reservation, no guarantee that they will be able to honor it....BUT if I try to fly in the morning of... say the flight gets cancelled, or I get bumped for relief workers etc..., this could happen the day before the cruise also...( I am anticipating recovery efforts still underway in November, just 6-7 weeks away), will the DCL insurance cover my not making it to the pier? I have credit cards that give some travel insurance but if I am delayed, how to get to the next stop, St. Kitts as it stands now.... what kind of air service exists now between islands? Then if I get stuck in San Juan, good luck getting off the island.... the few flights they have going are quite full and i doubt the airport/flights will be anywhere near the old capacity....
Any thoughts on the matter?

If you don't make it to the dock due to something you did (booking your own flight, and the flight doesn't make it there), then DCL will NOT cover it. They only cover anything you paid for through DCL.

And, I wouldn't count on joining the ship in the next port. That's not allowed very often.

guess I should try to get in the day before and hope the hotels are functioning....and use a credit card for the flight that gives me some sort of travel insurance...

Every time I've bought an airline ticket lately the airline offers flight insurance as an option. I haven't gotten it though - I roll the cost into my trip insurance so everything is in one place. But airlines definitely offer their own now.

So...are you following the Royal Caribbean situation at all? They had a cruise leave yesterday. People flew in and described perfectly decent conditions at the airport (food power water and not many people waiting around), with taxis, and on the roads. Few are talking about hotels because for those cruise the ship was there and empty. So RCI invited people who got in on the 6th to be shuttled straight to the ship and stay that night before the sailing.

Many are watching the Adventure of the Seas cruise leaving on the 14th because either everyone will come in the same day or there's the hope that there will be more hotels open. And there have been some airbnb users! Don't overlook that possibility. And that would directly help the people there.

So keep an eye on Royal's upcoming cruises to see how travel is going.

But I wouldn't worry about flights being bumped and cancelled. Flights are going in and out now just fine, according to the sites that track that and the people who flew in among the 3-4000 people who are on Adventure right now.

I usually fly in a day early for cruises, even if they are within the continental U.S. There's just too much variability with respect to airplane delays.

1. PRE hotel: Always fly the day before cruise departure. Have been burned by this in past trips.
2. Insurance: best to have 1 provider cover end to end trip /all segments but if you already bought DCL's for the cruise, coordinate directly w/ the travel insurance provider for air & hotel coverages. GENERALI coordinated w/ our credit card as primary/secondary for a claim.
3. Airline insurance: The airline offered travel insurance has very limited coverage amounts & only for flight. I would call travel insurance provider for advice on your scenario.
