Have any DVC folks ever stayed at North Myrtle Beach??

I was kinda looking at places that have availibility for cash nights in July.... to break up our trip home from FL to MD. I want an oceanfront resort. Thinking we might stay for 3 nights. I have found a few resorts with 2 br's that are available. I have heard that N. Myrtle is quieter, but I know nothing about this area at all. Thanks if you can help me.

might I suggest... skip Myrtle Beach, use Hilton Head instead. We travel to MB frequently and it is a great destination. However, if you are driving I-95, North Myrtle Beach is about an hour and 45 minutes from I-95. Hilton Head on the other hand is about 35 minutes from I-95 and you could use your DVC membership there.

Just my 2-cents.

I am soooo glad you asked this , never been to MB either but we were thinking of this too on our drive home in August; we usually stop at HHI going & coming back home but we are traveling with DBro & his family this year and they'd like to try MB on trip home since we are stopping 2 nights at HHI on way to WDW. Our cousins have stayed at Embassy Suites-Kingston Plantation and had nothing but good things to say about it, their kids especially liked the onsite pool-water park feature; I'm not entirely sure that this property fronts the beach though & I think it is somewhat north but not certain it is considered North Myrtle, I have to investigate more. We have friends who go often to MB but they rent condos for week but we want hotel.

I haven't looked all that closely at things yet because this plan ( and I use the word plan loosely ) just came up over the weekend BUT one hotel I'd looked quickly at in North MB I think was about 20 miles from heart of MB. I hope you'll post back if you find out anything that looks good, and I'm gonna watch this thread to see what others post

Well HHI doesn't have anything on points unless they have something on cash. However we need a 2 br or 2 studios. Hmmmm I have not checked other HH places for cash stays though. THANKS...I will do that now.

Well don't feel bad...I GOT THIS CRAZY IDEA TODAY!!!! LOL Here is a place that has a 25% discount and the Cayman Tower I think it is called is the newest one. My friend has stayed here and said it was nice. They got a 4 bedroom gulf front on the 15th floor and shared it with another family.

Stayed at Kingston Plantation in a condo not at the Embassay Suites. Definitely stay there. It is on the ocean and it is fantastic.

our MB favs r:

*the crown reef (more traditional resort & hotel rooms in far south location = quiet & easy to navigate to broadway @ beach, etc.)

*monteray bay, large studios, rooftop pool & free breakfast buffet last visit &

*compass cove, many different room layouts, extensive pool selection

*The Landmark was supposed to be updated since our last visit, has great indoor pool area.

My parents owned at http://www.atlanticresortgroup.com for about a decade before they realized as much as they loved Myrtle Beach, FL was for them. For location, it is a far north as you can get in Myrtle Beach without crossing over into N. Myrtle beach. You're just around the corner from everything but you feel like you're in another world.

Take a look - I know a ton about the place if you have any questions. I will say it's is very secluded with a trailer park on the right (home!) I grew up there when we weren't at Fort Wilderness or someplace in between! and a nature preserve on the left. There is a 6-7' tall solid fence so never fear, the wildlife won't make it over.

The prices did shock me but as I said it's been a long time since they owned there and rented out their unit.

none in north MB, closest to it would be montery bay, short drive on hwy to north MB. We just always preferred MB proper as our fav restuarants were in that area (vs restaurant row in NMB) and it was closer drive to murrells inlet area.

montery bay is slightly north of the place u mentioned, is in more of residential area & closest to NMB

the rest are all southern end of strand, with easy access to hwy to skirt the tourist area when u want to drive to 'where ever'

Kingston Plantation was nice. However, the last time we visited Myrtle Beach we stayed at Dunes Village Resort. We loved it. Check out their pools.

Okay thanks I'll take a look at Dunes Village. And THANKS DENISE for starting this thread & for everyones replies so far. It's always good to hear what DIS'ers have to say especially on places we haven't been to before - it's hard enough planning with own family let alone with Dbro & his fam squad in the mix, my head is positively spinning (and I can't rant to DH too much about this because it's MY side of the family )

We checked into the Marriott, which was absolute heaven. There is a main hotel, plus the timeshare villas next door. Can't recommend it enough.

I live in the Kingston Plantation Resort....and there is no Hyatt

The Kingston Resort area is nice...it is right on the beach. And there are tons of pools...the newest pool is a salt water pool with a sandy bottom area...its really pretty. Bands play on the weekend by the pool. I think it's fabulous.

Where you stay really depends on your needs...Embassy Suites is always nice because they have the free breakfast...plus each room is like a suite with a separate living/bedroom area.

If you need more room I would look into renting a condo in one of the Towers the Margate or Royal Palms are the newest buildings. The Royal Palms is only about 2 years old and is very nice. Also check VRBO (i think thats right...i mean vacation rentals by owner) you might find a even better deal.

We need a bigger place than an ordinary hotel room. We are a family of 5 and our kids are 19, 16 and 11. Are these towers on the ocean side??

yep the Towers are all ocean front.....the Brighton tower at Kingston is also nice.

This might just be some generic info for you:

If you want to stay in Myrtle Beach and want to be "in the thick" of things and on the beach, stay on Ocean Drive North. 1st Avenue north starts just after 501 runs out. I think the most "in the thick" area for MB is between about 21st and 38th avenues North. This area is also close to the convention center and Broadway (Ripley's Aquarium, Medeival Theater, shopping, etc).
If you want to be less "in the thick" of things but still not too far away from dining/shopping/activities, you want to stay nearer the Barefoot Landing area. Barefoot Landing is north of Hwy 22.
If you want to pretty much stay at your hotel, enjoy the beach and pool, maybe order out pizza or are not picky about driving a few minutes to get to a restaurant, you can look in between these areas - around the 60s avenue North (Caravelle, Monterey Bay, etc).
Cherry Grove Beach is really further north, but also a good choice for the most laid back idea.

MB is very touristy, beachy, etc. It is a good option if you are on a tighter budget - you can certainly get plenty of room for your money here. Most of the hotels are older and you are definitely going to have that beach-y feel/smell in your hotel. Just didn't want you to be surprised. Some people are offended by it - I love it!

If I had a choice, though, I would go for Hilton Head. We like it better, it's more convenient to I-95, and it's just wonderful. We wish we could afford to go there more often.
