Does the color of the wood of the cabinets have to match the color of the hutch, the color of the table and chairs, etc? I have a long kitchen and the cabinets and sink, etc are one one side and the table, hutch are on the other side.

Thanks!

I struggled with this question when trying to find a kitchen table and chairs for my house. I ultimately decided I'd never match the cherry wood from the cabinets, and went with a glass topped metal table and metal chairs. Many of my neighbors did the same.

As far as matching exactly, no probably not. But I think they have to compliment each other. That's the trick :)

The current "trend" if you look at the more expensive furniture catalogs, is to have different types of wood. Look at Ethan Allen and you'll see what I mean.

Wow, maybe my completely mismatched house is in style!!

I don't think they have to match perfectly, but I think they should "blend". What I mean is, you don't want a very colonial looking kitchen as far as cabinetry etc is concerned, then a very modern looking brass and glass table.

In my kitchen, my cabinets are golden oak. My kitchen table and microwave cart have white painted legs with an oak looking top. Not exactly the same(I have no white painted cabinetry in my kitchen) but the looks are both sort of traditional and the oak table top kind of compliments the cabinets.

A decorator would tell you they should NOT match, just like he/she would tell you to NEVER buy a matched set of furniture for your family room.

There is no should here -- it depends on what you like and can afford. I don't think matching kitchen stuff to the cabinets is important -- I would get what I liked. I personally like my bedroom furniture to match (and it does), but would never buy a matched set of upholstery or tables for the living or family room. I have two chairs that are alike but the other chair and sofa are different but coordinate well. A few decorative pillows pull it all together.

I don't think they need to match, but I wanted mine to. I have BEAUTIFUL old pine cabinets, and I love them. I took a drawer with me to an unfinished furniture store. They helped me choose a stain that would match the stain on the cabinets. I bought a counter-height unfinished table and chairs. I stained the tops to match the cabinets, and stained the legs green.

I really like the counter-height table, BTW. I can use it as extra counter space if I need it.

Trend in decorating is to not match them, and I think that looks good IF the style of the pieces match... like someone mentioned above, everything is traditional, or everything is contemporary, etc.

I think it's impossible to find the exact match for it all, so if you run with a similar style or theme, then I think it works great!

I agree with tarheel. "There is no should here -- it depends on what you like and can afford. I don't think matching kitchen stuff to the cabinets is important -- I would get what I liked."

As long as the styles complement each other and they are real wood, get what you want. I have light oak cabinets and a medium to dark oak antique table. They are definitely not the same color, but, they work well together! :sunny:

I have white cabinets and a table with a cherry top and metal legs. The bakers rack is also cherry with metal. As long as things blend, the sky's the limit.
