I am just finally getting into HM, finding that it's a good funding source for my insane credit needy family. I have been looking on the board for tips and can not seem to find answers to the following.

-When a game begins, some players get a wicked head start while my player sits there semi-transparent/diasbled. I understand on the second and third level head starts. How do they get the head start on the first level?

-Some players (seems like the pros) zip around the board twice as fast as the other players. How?

-I understand that players drop out of the game, and some loose connections, but it seems that I loose my opponents like 3 out of 4 times on most days. Is there something I can do to improve this? (shot in the dark on this one)

-Is there a pattern to which door will be the exit? The pro players seem to pick it the first time, almost everytime.

-Is it appropriate to tell Knock Knock jokes durring game play?

Thanks alot BellBoy

The speed in your game is very dependent on your computers connection speed and a very good processor.

Practice is your best option. That being said, keep moving. I see so many players stop when they are trying to catch ghosts. Move it move it!!
Another thing I do is not bother chasing the other team if they are turned into your ghost color.. Yes you get two points but it wastes valuable time you could easily get those two ghosts for real and they stay unable to get any of their own. If they are near you go for it, but don't chase, waste of time.
Try to take in games that are two on two and each stay on a level and only worry about your level. That saves lots of walk around time.

Just a few tips. Good luck!

Here are some of the answers to your questions:

-Sometimes they get a head start because they move around their mouse in all directions while the game is counting off. I do that and I start off easily.

-Some players zip around fast because they handle the mouse or arrows faster and know how to avoid being touched by the other players ghosts.

-There really isnt anything you can do for players not to get BSOD. It just happens randomly, it happens to me all the time too. I may be playing one minute and the next they're gone.

-There isnt a pattern to which door will be next. (At least not one that I know of.) You just have to be quick. Once you see the timer is on 10 seconds, stop what you're doing and go upstairs or near a door. When the timer hits 0 then go inside the door quickly. You know the door you entered and the door you exited through cant be the "right one" so just try other ones
as fast as you can.

-About those Knock Knock jokes I dont know. LOL Maybe. You can use them to distract your opponent but then it will take you twice the time to write it out. (Especially with VMK's special use of their dictionary!) So, I guess not. Just concentrate on what you're doing and play our best! :yay:

Remeber to always have fun and to beat your opponents butt! :rotfl2:

On the second or third levels, players might get a head start because their team found the correct door in the level before. it usually says under' ______ team wins this round ' that the _______ team gets a head start for finding the correct door.

Do you pros use the mouse or keyboard when you play?
When you search the board here you get a zillion hits on HM but most of what I saw seemed to say use the keyboard.

Do you get credit rewards for every 10 games you play?

Thanks again-bb

Some things that I have found that helped my game: :thumbsup2
-when you get fairly close to a ghost hit shift key twice It seems to suck them up from a greater distance :teeth:

-I use the mouse for game play. I click once when game is starting then only use the circle with arrows under player to manuever. I have never used keyboard so I can't say it is better or worse. I do know that I seem to do worse with my optical mouse than I did with the ball glide kind. :goodvibes

-staying on one level does help sometimes, but if you see your teammate struggling then get to that level.

-Don't be a ghost hog !!! I know that you get more points, but everyone is playing for points. And they remember players who respected them. ;)

-Have fun. Laugh when you goof and stop playing a while. But, try never to leave game just because you are doing badly. Hang till the end so the better players do get the extra credits :badpc:

Don't think I'm a pro, but I prefer using the mouse (mine is optical). Sometimes clicking your character and the floor around it will get them moving faster. You can also click to get your character moving in a certain direction if they seem stuck.

You do get bonus credits every so often, I'm not sure if its every ten or not. I also don't know the amounts because they seem to change often. The bonus that I've gotten range from 275 to 1000. Today I got one for 475, that was nice, especially when added to my game where I got 435 credits.

Whenever possible you should try to play with friends. I think sometimes people bail out of the game if they are getting beat. I know dc happens too, but I don't think its as often as all that. If you play one on one with a friend you can work together to keep each other free of ghosts and collecting more credits. You can also make sure to go three full rounds for more credits. You do get 2 points for unghosting your opponent but no credits. Once you get more used to moving well in the mansion its fun to play with two others and take turns going two on one. When you are alone on a side against two you can get a lot of ghosts. I try to never play more than two on two, really slows up the movement.

As far as the door race goes, I personally could care less if I get a head start in the next round. Seems more often than not your doorway will be surrounded by ghosts of the opposite color ready to pounce so doesn't really matter. Its only 5 seconds anyway. Hope all of this helps! Message me anytime to play a round bellboy, I'm always up for earning more credits!

The way you housed me today, your a pro!! Loved it.

Thankyou everyone. You play and you think these people have better ways, but I think I just need to practice.

AMEN on the dont be a hog and dont bail!!

Hey there :). I <3 mansion -- especially those green ghosts ;). I always use the mouse and make sure to keep clicking the control key, even if you are not right up on a ghost...you never know when you are going to be able to get one ;). And like someone mentioned...always keep moving! Time is wasted staying in one place. Another thing...practice does make a difference! :thumbsup2 Most of all...have fun :).

Best,

A Days~

I have another question about HM. Sometimes while I'm playing, I just completely run out of ghosts! There seem to be a million of the other color and none of mine.

Why does this happen?

When you run out of ghosts of your color, try "shaking" the coffins. Stand next to them. If they don't start shaking, hit the ctrl/shift key. Then make sure you run in case a ghost of the other color comes out. :)

This tends to happen when the othe team can't/won't catch their ghosts.

If you are playing against a team that has less people than you, they will get more ghosts and you will have less. And sometimes when the teams are even, one team will get more...just use the control key against the coffins to get more ghosts to come out (but be careful not to stand too close - they may not be your color :) ).

Wow, these are some great tips guys. I also am a sort of "newbie" when it comes to playing HM. I've only played it twice so far, but with these tips I'll be playing more for sure :)

I agree with whomever said to keep pushing that control (or shift) key! I'm tapping that key constantly, from the instant my ghost buster comes out of her door! Your vacuum can suck up those ghosts from a greater distance than you'd probably think. Oh, another little trick I've done -- At the end of a round when everybody is scrambling for the doors, if your opponent happens to still be "ghosted," and they are close to you, go after them -- that catch will still give you 2 points.

I have noticed that when I get too ghost happy, i tend to hit shift a lot. Then I get the "sticky keys" message. Is there anyway to keep that form happening??

I was dc in the middle of four HM games yesterday!! So if it was me, please know it was a dc. I have never exited a HM game; it would be rude to everyone else.... :confused3

Use the contol key instead and no more worries.

I agree. I position my left hand so that my thumb is over the Control key
on the left side. I use the mouse to control my avatar.

I find that you click when you start until you see the directional "ring",
and you can see the arrows that show which direction you "hover".
I find that I don't need to click my mouse unless I get stuck, which
happens a lot. Just click to start moving again.

And the "keep moving" advice is really good! I also find that it helps
to follow around a member of the opposite team, so both you and that
player can clean up ghosts that threaten you.

There is one tip I can share, and that is when you have been turned into a ghost is a perfect time to shake the caskets. It doesn't matter what comes out because you are already caught. So next time your ghosted, if you are not being chased grab on to the closest casket and get a few extra ghosts out on the field.

I'm a fair player. Just to contribute:
- I use keyboard only

- I agree, don't bother chasing the other team's ghostified players, unless they are right next to you, or you are trying to help them get as many ghosts as possible

- when YOU are ghostified, don't stand around being useless. Either shake coffins to get more ghosts out, or position yourself next to a clump of your own ghosts, so that when you change back, you're ready to go.

- if the game is running fast enough, it really helps to get experience learning how to run between and around the other team's ghosts, without getting ghostified. This just takes practice

- that being said, don't be SO afraid of getting ghostified that you are unwilling to take any chances and just stand around. Standing around is time wasted. Take a risk running by the other team's ghosts to get to that clump of your own ghosts. And if you get ghostified, no big deal. You were just standing around anyway, and now that you're a ghost anyhow, go ahead and shake some coffins -- more ghosts for you later.

- the "some players seem to move twice as fast" is a little bit of an illusion. Notice that moving straight up and down or straight left and right on the screen makes your avatar APPEAR to move twice as fast than moving diagonally. It's not a real speed increase -- I think it just has to do with the shape of the grid. But it "feels" faster

- don't get hung up on who "wins" the game. Yes, you need to "win" in order to get the "every X number of games" bonus credits, or to make the "all-time lists" (heh, but at this point Certain People ;) have the all-time lists so in-hand, that nobody except melkrirob is going to catch up to them), but I would SO much rather get my bumm handed to me on a platter in a game where I scored 90+ ghosts (=90x5 = 450 credits), than "win" a game where the final score was 22 to 21 (22x5 + 40 = 150 credits).

- I believe the developers are aware of the one team starting before the other bug (even on the first round, NOT related to who found the door at the end of the round first). It seems to happen to me more often than it happens to the other team -- perhaps it's related to internet connection / computer speed

- it doesn't matter to me who gets to "start first"; the few seconds head start don't really make a difference. At this point, at the end of the round, I just run straight at a blue ghost, to end it quickly. More interesting than running around for half a minute checking doors.

- that being said, I've had a sneaking suspicion that the "correct" door, tends to be one that you do NOT teleport to by going through another door. In other words, you know how when you go through a "wrong" door, and then come out another door? I don't think that the door you come out of seems to ever be the "correct one", so you don't need to go back through it, to test it. And of course, watch which doors your own team-mate has tried, and don't bother trying them again. But, for me, I don't care. I'd rather suicide into a blue ghost.

- just my musings
