Hattiesburg, MS

Hi, sure I was born in Greenville.

Also, I have a friend who grew up in Clarksdale and she told me that everyone from Clarksdale has had some degree of histoplasmosis (sp?). She said Clarksdale is a stopping point in the migratory patterns of the purple martin, so everybody breathes in a little bird poop dust. When I saw your tag, it made me wonder if that's the reason birds freak you out.

LOL!

Nope birds freak me out because of the Hitchcock movie!

We do have a rich history here in the Delta. It's sad though that there aren't that many people left who are interested in truly conserving that history.

I lived in Hattiesburg for 23 years before I moved to the crap hole, i mean capital. I miss Hattiesburg every day. I'm a single mom now and would move back if the hospital there paid as much as I make here.
I agree with the others, Oak Grove, Sumrall or the Dixie community are the best places to live. It's a great location, has nice people, and good cost of living. I would recommend it if you are looking for a place to settle down and have kids. If you are looking for a busy metropolitan type area, it's not for you. However, a metropolitan area is only an hour away!

I have a friend who is a nurse in Hattisburg. Last time I spoke to her she was very high up in ?? something ?? LOL! Her name was Janet Mitchell.

OP, I bet you're not home yet but I want to bump this just in case you were. I'm interested to hear your impressions of The Pine Belt.

:sad1:

cue Bruce Springsteen singing "my hometown." surely you don't live in Jackson proper.

by the way, my wife is a nurse at Baptist. when she started nursing in 1991, her pay was $11.00/hour. thank God that has changed.

Not many people live in Jackson proper any more (unless it is on the north side). We live in Brandon and I work in Ridgeland.

OP, Mississippi is really a great place to live. There are some less than desirable places, but isn't that everywhere?

BTW, I forgot to mention that there is a really great store there called Trees and Trends (right on Highway 49 south of the University). It has great holiday home decor and usually right before and after a holiday they mark their stuff waaaayyyy down. It's great!

I have never lived in Mississippi. I was born and raised in Louisiana until DH and I moved in 2002. So we are definitely southern people! Of course, we went to Mississippi often. I just had to jump in and say that it will be a huge shock to your system since you are from WA!!!!! It will be so different from WA! Honestly, it will be a different culture. The southern hospitality will be obvious. The food is delicious. The cost of living will be a change too. I can't wait to see what you have to say.

where were all these mississippi disers when i was spending more time at univ of miss hospital in jackson than home,,lol

I live in Rankin County. I only go into Jackson proper to work. I work in the ER so I know what really goes on in this city. There is so much more happening here than any of you will ever know. If I could move back to Hattiesburg, I would in a second. As a matter of fact, I was curious and looked at houses online last night. They have gone up tremendously since before Katrina. Amazing at some of the prices!
