Has this ever happened to anyone? ZPDI LD Charges & NCIC

Hi again,

Thanks everyone for your information - I really appreciate it. I think I have been able to figure out what happened.

I always dial the Bell Calling Card # (1-800-555-1111) first. However, this time for whatever reason, it would not connect. So, I followed the instructions on the back of my Cell Calling Card, which reads: To place calls from Canada or the U.S.: - Dial 0 + area code + phone number you are calling. After the tone, enter your 10-digit card number and 4-digit PIN. This must have been when the other operator completed my call.

I'm not sure that I would go as far as calling it an error on my part, but I have certainly learned an expensive lesson and will use pre-paid cards from Canada for the future!

Thanks again for everyone's help and comments - much appreciated!

What I would suggest is calling Bell and if you have most of your services with Bell, they may be able to help you with the charges.

If I remember correctly, they decided to give me 1/2 back of what I paid which I thought was really fair.

Good Luck

I have always purchased prepaid phone cards and have never used a phone from a hotel room. I had heard all the horror stories and decided it wasn't worth it. Yeah, public pay phones are not as private, but I have never taken more than a $10 phone card down to the States with any problems. Sorry about the charges - that is so unfortunate right after Christmas!

Hmmm...I have a realy old calling card from Bell...it doesn't have a 1-800 number on the back...at least I never noticed one.

I was in Chicago in August and had to make a call to Denver to straighten out a Paypal problem....made two calls...one from the hotel room and one form the lobby payphone. Imagine my surprise when the phone bill was $90!!!! I would have been better off using my cell phone...it would have been half of that. Live and learn.

I'm relieved to know that by calling the 1-800 first and connecting to the Canadian operator, I was doing it right!

However, I think I might try a pre-paid card next. There are no problems using a card purchased up here and used down in the US? Would I be able to use it anywhere in the US?

We plan on buying the President's Choice card for our trip next month and you can buy them in all the stores that carry PC products.....4.3 cents a minute is even a better rate than my calling card. :flower:

4.3 cents a minute from U.S. to Canada, and no additional surcharges or fees for using a payphone (which many cards have). The best deal by far - better than Walmart and ATT ones which do have surcharges. These are available by the way from any Loblaws stores - Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstore, Fortinos.

Good luck and happy long distance calling! Tiger
