Has prednisone made you're child more moody?

Mine is only on it for 2 more days, but I've seen a change for sure. He's snippy with me and challenging everything I say, angered quickly. Not the normal 7 y/o stuff.

We're on our way shortly for a follow up with his ped from his ER visit on sunday when he was prescribed the prednisone.

Hope these are the last 2 days on prednisone.

My godson used to turn into Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde on prednisone. One time he was on it so long and such a high dose he turned into a moon faced look. He also used to eat ANYTHING...one time he ate a stick of butter right out of the wrapper!

Our ds9 used to get croup a lot when he was younger, and dh and I always cringed when we saw Prednisone on the Rx! He'd get edgy and excitable and zoom around the house with evil intent. He outgrew the croup tendencies several years ago, and we are very grateful!

yes those are all side effects of prednisone. it is horrible. weaning from prednisone can be really tough for everyone.

It took me nearly 4 weeks to wean down (i was at 60mg a day) and was a basket case mentally and in physical pain.

It's a wonder drug but I try to aviod it unless it's 100% necessary.

My son reacts to the first few days of any liquid steroid.Then he usually settles down.Hope your son is feeling better.

My oldest DD has ulcerative colitis and has to be on prednisone when her disease flares up. It definitely makes her very moody. I'm not sure what your son is taking prednisone for, but be careful with the weaning. In my DD's case it has to be done very slowy over a period of severl weeks or her colitis will flare again. Be sure to ask your Dr. about the weaning process at your next visit.

I could have written this exact post about MY DS (except DS got croup right up to age 9 - long past what is "normal"). Thank goodness he did not get it this year! He also would zoom aroun the house and cause mayhem and mischief. I always swore he wouldn't make it to another birthday when he was on prednisone. It is AMAZING what it does to my sweet tempered child.

He would walk up to people and slap them, he is usually very sweet and he was screaming at me!! I ended up calling the dr. office after 2 days and asking for permission to stop! They told me to do 1/2 doses for the last day and he should be all set. I hope we don't need to use that med ever again.

LOL...Matthew was on it for MONTHS at a time...it was unbearable at times!

Yes! My son takes it every so often for a poison ivy allergy. He is horrible on it- like a totally different child. We only use it as a last resort.

I've been taking prednisone since I was 8 years old and I'm now 20. When I was younger I used to be incredibly mood because of the medicine. One minute I was fine but even the smallest thing would just make me snap. It's a side effect of prednisone so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I hope everything gets better for you and your son soon.

Oh my! Now I know there's a connection. My oldest has taken it for bronchitis, but never noticed a change really with her and it was short burst of prednisone with her too.

I can't believe you're posts, scary stuff!

My son was put on it for swelling of his fingers and hands from the case of the hives, probable viral.

Just back from his ped who said she doesn't normally prescribe anything other then OTC stuff for hives, but in his situation, she agrees with the ER doc's writing of the script. She confirmed that pred. can really change into angel into a tyrant too.

Only 2 more days.. he is only on 2 tsp a day, I can't imagine a higher dose. The pediatrician suggested taking 1 tsp in the AM and the other in the PM to lessen the side effects, that way he'll be in bed after the 2nd dose.

Anytime I'm on it, i'm incredibly moody and it's hard to handle the moodswings on my own strength! Very common side effect.

My DD has been on it since she was 2.5yrs (she's 6.5 yrs now, she had a serious illness as a kid and to possibly prevent a reoccurance, she is on the prednisone along with other meds). She has also been on the same dosage for the past 3 yrs. Early on, I may have noticed a slightly different behavior...but since she has outgrown her dose, I haven't really noticed any differences. I don't know if I can chalk up any differences due to the medication, because he has been on it for so friggin long. Maybe if we ever get her off the drug, we will see a different girl. Maybe someday.....
