After two ten pound babies my abs could use a serious workout, but I hate doing sit-ups because it kills my back. This machine looks great but it is expensive, I was just wondering if anyone used it and what they thought.

If you are looking for a great ab workout that isn't bad on your back and isn't expensive, I use the Ab-Slide and it's great. Basically it's a wheel with two handles on the side. You use your abs to slide it away from your body and back in (while on your knees).

I use a couple of techniques that work well for me:

Imagine you are using a hula hoop and work up to 50 circles each direction.

Tighten your abs hold for a few seconds and release do this several times during the day while you are standing around. Each time you do it do several reps.

Hope that helps. I do these exercises every day.

I'd say if it is expensive that you could find better use for the $$$. Try doing Pilates or Yoga. You can get a Pilates DVD at the library to try out and this works your core muscle groups that will help back problems along with the ab strength. Don't have to be able to do everything right off. Usually they offer a modified version until you can work up to things.

Yes...I agree with Lily. I know it's tempting to buy workout equipment, but usually the most effective work is done on the mat. Ab work should not hurt your back if taught correctly. I'd recommend a good Pilates video such as anything by Stott or Pilates for Dummies. They will give you the proper cues to help your technique which should in turn HELP your back and not hurt it. I have Pilates clients who have been sent to me by doctors or physical therapists who are working with back injury patients.

Good luck...and PM me if you have any questions.
