We are looking at a master bath remodeling job. Of course, we'd like to save money on this.

This company advertises a lot in our market, and are offering a 30 day free membership. Just wondering if it's truly a good deal. Our tastes are very specific. We want to do a modern/zen type of bathroom, so I'm also wondering how varied their selections are. Can you get tile and faucets, etc, there?

TIA!

My parents did and furnished their new kitchen with cabinetry, appliances, etc and some furniture as well. they at first poopoohed it and after researching pricing etc went back. have been very happy.

From my understanding, you can buy literally everything there. But I would google "direct buy reviews". There are some pretty scary stories. Nasty employees, hard sales. I've also read that they don't actually have much in stock for you to look at. I think their membership fee is over $10k. I would imagine that there must be strings attached to the free trial. The company generally seems shady.

I just looked at reviews on this company. They are very shady. The presentation is like a high pressure time share. The fee to join is like $4500 for three years then $200 a year after that. I think your money would probably be better served just shopping for the best "non-direct" price you can find.

When you come to your appointment, you walk in the front door and are dazzled! They sit down with you and show you how much $ you can save. It's very high pressure. The initial investment is $5000 for the year and all you are getting is 10% off the price at a retail store through Direct Buy. If you don't sign up...you are escorted out the back door with a foot in your rear!

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback. It did seem too good to be true,...which meant something felt wrong about the whole thing.

I think our Bathroom remodel will be in the 5-7K range, so the fee to join makes absolutely no sense for us.

Thanks again for all the info!:)

I have heard that they do have good deals on super expensive items, nothing that you would buy at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.... good luck

We were suckered in and joined. It was the biggest waste of money for us. Now, if you are doing a major remodel then I can see how it is tempting. But, things are (or at least were) delivered to them and then you have to make arrangements to pick it up...

Overall, I agree: RUN AWAY! I won't recommend them to my worst enemy!

I seem to remember some news stations around me doing a consumer review about Direct Buy and it was not very complimentary to say the least  I agree that their ads sound very appealing but from this report, they are quite misleading.

I believe, if you have abut 30,000 or MORE in updates, remodeling, it MAY be a good deal, but be leery. You have to make an appt, just to see the showcase.

Maybe you aren't a member, but I am. And it wasn't high pressure at all where we live.

We joined here in Maryland, and couldn't be happier! I so wish I'd joined BEFORE we built our new house. We've wasted money at Ethan Allen (although it's nice furniture) before joining. We just finished out a bar and built-ins in our basement, and did it all through them (buying the cabinets, appliances, and tile through them, plus the carpet guy works with them).

It was actually $4000 to join, and I saved that just on furniture for my kids' bedrooms! One nightstand for my DD retails for over $900 (it's same quality as Ethan Allen but a different manufacturer, very well made) and I paid a little over $300 each. I got her a beautiful wrought iron bed for about $200. My kids have big bedrooms with sitting rooms, and I wanted to furnish them once and be done with it, so was looking at items that will be well made.

We haven't even gotten to the window coverings yet, but we'll definitely save thousands on those too.

Also, I got two Hickory White chairs for my living room - I met with a salesperson at one furniture store near me, and she said with my fabric they would be over $3000 each. I got both for $1700 total from Direct Buy. Of course I told the furniture salesperson I was just going to think about it.

Now, it does take time, and the showroom does not have actual samples on display like Ethan Allen, or another furniture store. You have to do some legwork if you want to see furniture in person. They have catalogs from the various manufacturers all organized, plus fabrics, and you can get the best deals for furniture, appliances, and other household items (ceiling fans, kitchen items, Waterford crystal). The only items I really do not think are worth getting from them are electronics.

When my husband wanted to join, I thought it was a scam. Then we got ordering some things, and I realized that it is a great deal - if you need lots of furniture (like we do) or are redoing a room with flooring, cabinets, appliances. Oh, I could kick myself in the rear for doing our closets with California Closets! Not that they are bad, but man I could have saved thousands. We keep saying we wished we'd have joined sooner!

Our experience has been a good one. If you are planning large purchases, it's a good deal. If you aren't, then I wouldn't bother. It does cost a lot upfront.

Just an FYI, there are some items you can special order from Lowes. Not the super-duper-high end stuff, but there was some items not carried in the stores that I gave them the model number and they ordered for me. Even was able to use a Lowes 10% off coupon I got off ebay. For example there was a Kohler line I wanted for the bathroom accessories, they ordered it and I think standard pricing was about 25-30% off MSRP.

Since you are doing a bathroom I have to mention one thing about Kohler. Their customer service is amazing! We have the same toilet paper holder (Fairfax, I think) in each bathroom. We ordered another one when we finished basement and something was wrong with it... every time you pulled the paper, the roll went flying off the holder. We called them and they sent us a new one ASAP, didn't even want the defective one back!

My sister called me one day to tell me that their neighbors (who are Direct Buy members) were ordering them some appliances at a great deal from Direct Buy and I said to her "isn't that place a scam?"

Well, it turns out that after I said that they priced them out if they were to purchase them on their own and they would have save a significant amount of money purchasing them on their and not going through Direct Buy.

That was a lesson learned for them. Also, they had to pick the appliances up at their warehouse but they would have been delivered for free if they purchased them on their own.

With a little research, I think you can do much better than their prices on your own.

It's a scam...just google reviews and you'll see!

If you're ordering $3000 chairs... I'm guessing the 7K joining fee isn't much (that's what they quoted me). On the flip side...if you can afford $3000 chairs I'd venture a guess that you don't really need to worry about savings as much as the average person.

That is what the local consumer advocate newscaster found when he researched Direct Buy after receiving so many complaints about it being a scam.

Thanks for all the feedback. For our small project it won't be worth joining. Plus we've never been the types to order high high end stuff....we're more middle of the road type of folks. :)
