Hope this is a good place to ask this. Wondering if anyone has packed cans or bottles of soda in their checked luggage to fly? The airlines don't really give much info on this. Mostly what I am wondering if it would explode due to pressure or not? I am a die hard Diet Mt Dew fan and it would be the only item we couldn't get on site.

The baggage area is not pressurized like the cabins are. You're talking about taking a can or bottle that is already under pressure (that's how they dissolve the gas in the liquid) and you're going to put it in a place where the air pressure surrounding it is less than it is at ground level. I think that you'd be taking a big chance by doing this. Maybe you can make a grocery run to get your Mt. Dew before checking in to your resort?

Another Die hard Diet Dew fan here.

#1 I reccommend bottles over cans. Cans are more apt to explode under stress, heat, cold etc.

#2 Carefully wrap you bottles in layers of plastic bags (check for holes) and seal with duct tape.

#3 make sure your bottles are positioned in the middle of your suitcase, cusioned by your clothes.

#4 pray it doesn't leak!

I've traveled with bottles without a problem before.

No, don't do it with either cans or bottles! All carbonated liquids give off gas and unless you want wet sticky cloths, dont do it. Make a stop at the grocery store and pick it up once you are there. aka-mad4themouse is correct about the pressure difference. Plus why take up the extra space and add the additional weight when they could be used for better reasons.

Last time I flew I was served a can of soda?????? What's the difference other than them getting crushed from the handlers?

The aircraft's cabins is pressurized, the baggage area is not. You could carry on a few cans of soda and they wouldn't explode but pack them in your checked luggage and you're quite likely to have a mess on your hands when you get to baggage claim.

We plan on bringing some in our carry on bags and then if we need to we will get more at the market.

It is never a good idea to pack soda in luggage. I would look into packing it up ( with lots of packing around each can) and sending it ahead of you by a courier of some other transport method. Good Luck!!!

I used to pack cans of pop in my checked luggage with no problem. I love a cold diet pepsi in the mornings. I don't pack them any more because it seems like the weight limits for baggage has decreased over the last couple years.

Maybe you could double check with your airline. I have a friend who is a structural engineer for United. She told me United's planes cargo/baggage area is pressurized. I think they even put animals there that are flying.

i would also suggest going to a grocery store when you get there. or if you have a small carry-on suitcase with wheels pack it full of pop. then put it in the overhead storage.

I hate to bust everyones bubble but, ALL pressurized commercial airlines cargo holds ARE pressurized. They may not be heated but, there are pressurized. Within an airplanes cargo hold are fire suppression systems. If you had an unpressurized hold ,the fire suppression system would be unable to work, as you would be unable to keep the suppression agent in the plane. There are also other reasons that they are pressurized, one of which is that the floor underneath your feet on a plane is not made to withstand a pressure differential. On a pilots preflight, there are told if there are any live animals in hold . Usally a pet will be put into a forward hold and the the pilot must activate the heat in the hold. The switch is usally termed "puppy snuffer". Temperatures in unheated holds can reach as must as -50 centigrade with no air flow. SO, Wrap you cans in towels, put them in the middle of your suitcase and, hope that no baggage handler tosses them off the back of the plane to the runway when unloading them.

Go to an internet grocer and send them...less carrying....Wish I had done this for my Dr Pepper. Couldn't find it all at the parks...and only found Root Beer at MGM at the end of the day...wasn't cold...but whatya gonna do...

I just called Southwest and they said you can bring cokes and food in your check luggage without any problems..

Yeah, bring it in your checked luggage. We lovingly carted a 6-pack of Cheerwine back from North Carolina last year.. (and it was gone within 48 hours of landing.... gee that's some good stuff ).

I personally have never done this, but I have a friend who went on a European vacation every year when we were kids. He packed a suitcase full of Coca-Cola - enough to last for two weeks - each time without ever having any problems so it can be done. However, I can't imagine how heavy that suitcase was.

Yep, I am another one who has done this many times. I doublebag the bottles in ziploc bags just in case, but have never had a problem. I put the pop in a smaller suitcase and then have the empty case for those little purchases made in WDW!

I have both carried cans and bottles on and checked them--Have never had a problem. Last trip I even used a rolling cooler as a checked bag and put them in it. If they leaked it would not matter!

I always bring bottled water (theirs tastes funny to me ) and I have had times when a bottle leaked (even wrapped in plastic bags). With water, it's not much of a problem, but I wouldn't want soda all over my clothes. I'd put it in a carry on if you have to bring it.

we packed 2 large hard suitcases filled with water. no prob!! i wraped the water in plqastic bags I also di 5 soft side coolers with Pepsi! no prob . I did have security check it a note was in my bags
