Has anyone taken bonine or dramamine before rides? Which is better?

Non drowsy Dramamine and Bonine both contain the same active ingredient, meclizine, which causes less drowsiness for most people than the ingredient dimenhydrinate, which is in regular Dramamine. The patch, Transderm Scop, requires a prescription.

I was nervous about the ridies when we went last summer. I have never had trouble before but it had been almost 10 years since we had gone and obviously I am that much older now. I had read many people have trouble after entering their 40's and I really didn't want to go on a ride and then ruin the rest of my day. I ended up purchasing Motion eaze. It is a tiny bottle that you put a drop or two behind your ears in the morning and away you go. It doesn't smell the greatest but the odor does not linger at all. I will never know if it helped but I went on everything with my children (except TOT) during the entire week and never had any trouble at all. My morning regiment was Motion eaze and a tylenol then grab my Magic Band and go.

Normally I'm okay with rides but just to be on the safe side, I'm thinking I should take some kind of motion sickness pills. (Worried especially about Mission: SPACE ride and rides at Universal).

Has anyone taken motion sickness pills before the rides?

Been reading about bonine or dramamine so thinking of getting one of these. Or is it better to get prescription from my doctor? I know for sure I get seasick because 2 cruises I went on, I was sick and had to have patch.

Any suggestions?
No matter what med you take, if you have to ride Mission Space, get on the version of Mission Space that DOES NOT SPIN! I never had experienced motion sickness before on land , sea, or air. Even when many others were ill on whale watch boats, cruise ships, park rides, etc. I never felt sea sick or motion sickness and never take meds. HOWEVER, before they created the version that doesn't spin, I rode Mission Space and felt very ill right away. I did not feel well all day after that ride. Just because you get off doesn't mean you feel better. ALL DAY I felt so sick! I don't ride any version of it now. I've never had any motion sickness before or since that day. So do not count on meds to help you.

I took bonine as a precaution only because it was offered, & knowing i get sympathetic sickness when i see others sick. Ive been told by other users it is not as bad as dramamine. I was fine taking it with a energy drink (5-6 hours), then the rest of the day i was valueless, hungover, miserablly tired still 16 hours later. Ginger root pill was found as useful on the T.V show mythbusters without the side effects. Next time i will avoid.

I take chewable Bonine. It doesn't make me sleepy at all and it works for most rides- I still can't spin or do rides that throw you around a lot. Like others, I start taking it the night before. I would suggest trying it out before your trip just in case you have a problem. My husband tried Bonine and it made him loopy. He does much better with meclizine (which is the generic of Bonine, I know.... but it affected him differently). I also carry ginger candy in case I push it too far.

I replied earlier- I'm for Bonine all the way. Recently I've started purchasing it through Amazon. I buy the "Rugby" brand of Travel Sickness tablet; it's 25mg meclizine HCl, same as Bonine. It's 100 pills for about the same price as one pack of Bonine at Walmart, so it's a good deal- and it works!

I also sometimes take only a half or fourth of a pill- like if we are going somewhere and I'm not driving. I find it takes the edge off being sick without causing any drowsiness.

I always took Bonine and it never upset my stomach or made me sleepy. (And I have a sensitive stomach to medicine)

I'm a big fan of Bonine/meclizine. The non-drowsy aspect puts it over the top for me, when it comes to motion sickness (and I get motion sick very easily).

I've used Bonine ( or its generic version of meclizine) for both rides and cruises with excellent results. No nausea, but just as important, no drowsiness. But as with sea sickness, you need to take it well before you expect to have a problem. When cruising, I took it twice a day - before bed and before lunch. At parks, I took it every morning when we got up.

Dramamine makes me very drowsy, and I had to stop the patch after a couple of days because the side effects were so bad.

I had horrible side effects with those patches as well a few years ago when having vertigo. I went to a quick stop doc and the doctor prescribed those and in a few days, I could barely function. People would ask me questions and my mind would have to process what they were asking and a few seconds later be able to respond. Driving was very scary as well It really was a frightening feeling. I went to another doctor and he had me remove the patch and within just an hour or so I was much , MUCH better. I'll never wear those patches again!
