Has anyone taken ambien for short-term sleep problems?

Your Welcome.I told my aunt about them and now she swears by them.

I hope they help.

My daughter tried ambien a couple of times and had horrible hallucinations, they were so bad we had to take her to the er, the pharmacists later told us that was one of the rare side affects.

My DD took it while her best friend was in ICU, but after the friend died, it just didn't do the trick anymore.. (Can't tell you how many times she wandered up to my place at the lake at 2 or 3 a.m. from their travel trailer down on my extra lot and kept me up until 5 or 5:30 in the morning..) They have since put her on trazedone (something pretty strong) and that works much better..

The ambien is definitely worth a try and would be great for you if it prevents your needing something stronger..

Just like MeanLaureen, Ambien doesn't work for me at all. It's a "stretch" for me to say they relaxed me just a bit. My doctor warned me that they would knock me out!

I have taken it for 2 years and have to say it has changed my life. I have had sleep problems for over 20 years, have been to many doctors and had many sleep studies, and ambien has been the only thing that lets me sleep all night. I will sleep 6-7 hours solid and wake-up on my own.

Early this year when I was on Chemo for Breast Cancer I also couldn't sleep and since I was still working full time during all of this I needed by sleep.......no afternoon naps for me.....LOL I took them on the nights before I was sch. to work for alot longer than a week took it a 9p was asleep before 10p and up at 5a very refreshed and ready to go to work.
It was very easy to stop for me about 2 wks after I stopped the chemo I was off the Ambien.
Hope it works out for you.

I too take Ambien occasionally. I go through periods of insomnia where I just can't fall asleep. Once I'm out, I don't wake up until morning. Ambien works really well for me. DH has taken it a couple of times to and he likes it also.

Before Ambien, I tried Sonata and it made me hallucinate. THAT was a wild experience. DH and I still laugh about that one.

Another happy Ambien person. I had my dd at age 44, went through 'the change' at the same time as being pregnant. That was almost 11 yrs ago. I started hormone replac. therapy at that time. Well, 5 yrs. ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Obviously the hormones weren't a good choice for me. So, off I came. However, I started with insomnia at that point. Lived with it for about 3 yrs and finally the doctor put my on Ambien. What a difference. I had tried the Trazadone. Made me useless the next day. But, the Ambien allows me to fall asleep pretty quickly, and then stay asleep. I also get up around 2:30 every night for a potty run. With the Ambien I go right back to sleep. I split a 10 mg. one and take a half every other night. The doctor says that's better than trying to go without sleep. On the nights I don't take one I have to sleep in the guest room since my dh's snoring keeps me awake without the Ambien. The Tylenol PMs just don't get it done for me. Way too groggy the next day if I take two of them. So, without the Ambien I just toss and turn for about 3 hrs., fall asleep for 2 hrs, wake up, toss and turn some more and then drift off for the rest of the night. Nope, not a good way to live.

I have taken it. It was first given to me when I was in the hospital for preterm labor. I had to be there for 7 weeks, it is very hard to be pregnant and sleep in a hospital bed. Last year my physician gave it to me because due to low blood sugar, I have a hard time sleeping. I had 10mg tablets and I would try to cut them in 1/3 (not always perfectly). It didn't take much for me to go to sleep. And it was nice because I was not groggy in the morning. But now for a prescription of 30, with my insurance I would have to pay $50.00. No thanks, I take an occasional tylenol PM when I need help sleeping.

Anyone know what they cost out of pocket. I've been thinking of asking my doctor for a presc (he has in the past). Since moving to AZ I am averaging 3 hours of sleep if that (right now it's 3am and I am wide awake. I've not napped. Last night I "slept" from 8am-11am and then felt bad for sleeping so "late"). :(
I've tried reading, the computer, exercising, cleaning house, laying in bed in the dark, taking a warm bath... nothing helps :( I am just not tired or sleepy. I've tried Tylenol PM and it seems to do the opposite to me. I am wired.

My problem is the lack of sleep for me can lead to a seizure or it can mess with my already low platelets :(

I have insurance and it costs me $35 a month. Out of pocket would be $70 to $90 a month, depending where you bought them.
