This is the disney release of a Japanese anime piece. Does anybody know anything about it??

That is TOO ironic.... check out the thread on "Atlantis", as SSB JUST posted about what a FANTASTIC film "Spirited Away" is....

:) :) :)

First saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto with some other DIS'ers.... the Director was even there from Japan.

What BEAUTIFUL animation... and a very deep, well thought out plot and tons of developed characters. Time magazine as well as USA Today gave it the highest rating possible....!

I think that it is going to be ashamed that Disney is not putting a big push behind it. It was the largest grossing film EVER in Japan (last year).

SSB enjoyed so much, that I bought via Ebay, an overseas copy of the original version in Japanese.

Ok, is that enough of a plug?

PS: Also took DD (8) to see it here in Orlando, and she loved it.

Yup! It was interesting. I've seen it and Princess Mononoke and I prefered Princess Mononoke personally. IMHO, it's one that can wait to be seen until it comes out on video, but that's just my personal tastes. It was a little strange to me because of the differences in cultures represented. It's a Japanese story being presented to an American audience, so there's some difference there. I came out of it going "what was that I just saw? That was rather strange", but didn't come out with a bad feeling if that makes any sense. More I think on the movie (for me it's one you have to think about to really "get"), the more I think I liked it. But I wasn't sure when I first came out of it. ;)

Best I could compare it to would be the "strangeness" of Dark Crystal or Labyrinth. If you liked both of those, and you typically like Japanese Anime shows, you'll probly enjoy Spirited Away, too.

I searched and can't find a theatre anywhere near here showing it. I will keep trying. I have an 18yo dd who is really into anime and knows alot about Japanese culture. I wanted to take here to see this.
SSB - how was your dvd copy. I may buy one on ebay. My dd told me that some japanese dvd's are not good quality.

Spirited Away, very different, engrossing, a fascinating story! :)

....gluttony is never a good idea! ;) :)

Having said that, I think I'll go post on the "What's For Dinner" thread. :)

I thought it was absolutely BRILLIANT. :):):):)

Tiggeroo, my copy was good...

Only major difference was that it was sub-titled, instead of with the dubbed dialogue. Enjoyed both versions of it.

:) :) :)

Daughter doesn't mind sub-titles at all. She sat thru Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon a million times with subtitles.

This is a wonderful movie, the best thing Miyazaki has done since Totoro. The characters and settings are a bit strange, but they were meant to be that way. Its not so much a cultural thing, I read the Japanese find most of the characters strange too.

In any case, see this movie! I think its his second best work of all time (behind Totoro). Disney is slowly releasing it to more theaters, so it should be easier to find soon.
