Has anyone rented a car at WDW?

Hi everyone! We are looking at renting a car at the end of our WDW stay, to get us to the Gulf coast (where family lives). In past trips, we've rented as soon as we arrived at MCO, then pretty much let the car sit in the resort parking lot, (which seemed like a waste of money to me!) and just relied on the Disney buses. On our last trip, we used Mears to get us to WDW (never again) and the Disney cruise line bus to get us back to the airport. Reading these boards, I learned that there's a couple of rental car places in the car care center, as well as Downtown Disney hotels, so that seems like a good idea. Has anyone done this? Did it work out O.K.? How did you get to the rental car place (I read somewhere we can request from our resort (CSR) a shuttle to the car care center, did anyone do this?). And, most important, which car rental company did you use? I've looked at Alamo and Dollar so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would be interested in knowing this too!! This is what we hope to do when we do Vero Beach after 4 days in WDW in a year.

The Dolphin hotel has a Alamo/National counter. You can take a bus to the dolphin via one of the parks and pick up your vehicle. It seems to me that the price was a little higher since it was a one way rental to the airport.
